well not surprised, all Tim Cook has done so far is making excisting products even thinner and lighter

I feel like a broken record for saying this, but I wish Apple would keep the thickness the same and use the extra space for a bigger battery.

If the overall size of the phone is larger than current, which I assume it will be, there should be plenty of space to put a bigger battery. A larger battery doesn't necessarily need to be thicker.

I couldn't agree more. Whenever anyone mentions the OBVIOUS poor battery life of iPhones, blinkered fanboys argue otherwise as if the multitude of people who likely actually USE their iPhone instead of only texting with it are just insulting them in some way for suggesting they're lying.

I don't know if I qualify as a fanboy but as much as I like Apple products, I don't hold back to criticise them as harshly as possible when something bugs me.

The OBVIOUS poor battery life bugs me more than anything else. Since the first gen iPhone, I don't think Apple has made a conscious effort to extend the battery life of the iPhone. To them, it doesn't appear to be a problem.

When form comes ahead of function, I don't care whether Sir Ive or whoever is heading the design team, something is not right.

Or maybe your experience is not universally applicable?

What is the thickness of the earphone jack? That is the thinnest they can go, which is not too far.

who wants to bet apple is the first to kill off the 3.5mm jack because it's too fat? use bluetooth or a lightning adapter for headphones. Probably not happening yet though.

my prediction for the iPhone 6: Heavier yet smaller. Lower resolution screen and most likely revert back to 3G with an A4 chip

The iPhone can only be as thin as its thickest component, which currently is the Headphone Jack. So that will have to be redesigned to a mini jack or something in order to make the iPhone thinner. Which is certainly possible.

That's why I most people have a case on everything small and breakable.

Except for the iPod Classic, which was the size of a cigarette pack, I have dropped everything else.

While I like the look of the iPhone (BrAun fan since the 60s) it is more important to save what it would cost to replace.

I agree, but we are approaching a tipping point. I have the current ipod touch, and it's almost light enough it doesn't generate enough force dropping it to break itself. I mostly use it around the house, so i don't have a case, but I have used it and dropped it on pavement and it has a funny non painful sound compared to dropping an iphone.

Slimming down components is great.. if they use the extra space for things like a bigger camera sensor or a bigger battery. If they use that to make the phone thinner? No thanks. No interest in a thinner iPhone at all.

Nor yours. That's an utterly meaningless screenshot by the way. You could watch video for hours and barely make a dent, make a few hours of phone calls, send a few texts. Once you start using a lot web enabled apps, it can drop and drop FOR EVERYBODY.

I fail to see how 5% battery life after under 10 hours usage over a period of several days does anything BUT prove my point.

Isn't Apple's idea to make a product that is an extension of your life? Not some chunky useless tool. They want to make products that are easy to use- so as they continue to slim/thin down their products the idea is they'll be easier to use everyday/any time and it won't be a burden to lug it around.

battery life depends on usage, its not something apple can fix
if your screen is always on at full brightness, you are going to run your battery down fast

Thin as a hair

At what point does a device get too thin?

I like my devices to have some substance to them to hold?

everytime Apple changes some connector or dock, there's uproar. in the end most of us just move along anways.

But replacing the standard 3.5mm earphone plug as standard? Dont get me wrong, I would love for a better and bigger push to make Bluetooth, or other wireless headsets and earbuds more common,

But getting rid of the standard for earphones that have been in place since well, 1800's.

THAT would be an incredibly bold move, even for Apple.

they already did it, the first iPhone didnt support any other headphones if i remember correctly

Thank you for that attachment. Wasn't sure what you were talking about.

Yes, but the iOS 7 paper icon makes it hit closer. ;)

On a serious note, I have always been impressed with the concept of a paper-thin OLED "newspaper" a la "Minority Report" as some have already mentioned. That would be incredible.

I find that the iPhone 5/5S is the perfect size/thickness for me.

If it gets bigger, than good for people that wanted bigger iPhones.

had a 3.5mm jack on top, opposite side of the power button.

I honestly cannot think of a single modern device without a 3.5mm jack for earphones.

I had a few old flip phones that used a 2.5mm jack, but that was about it.

Someday iPhones will be fatter and curvier. This will be advertised as an advancement, and it will be. Big battery and cameral. Easy to hold. I love my 5s but it is not close to being comfortable to hold.

Yay thinner and lighter is always good.

No. Take the iMac: it's so thin now that they had to basically make everything non-user replaceable in except for the RAM, but only in the 27" model. The previous model allowed for user control of hardware, this model: no control... in the name of pointless thinness.

I feel there are new rumors back and forth every day. Time to show some leaks, without them, its all just talk.

This is just getting silly if it is going to get even thinner. Apple will eventually get the to point where the iPhone is too thin to be structurally stable and could easily be bent just from being in a area with uneven weight pressing against it(purse) or someone who puts it in their pocket and wears tight pants. The iPhone 5 and 5s already can be easily bent, so going even thinner is just stupid. Having the thinnest smartphone is no longer a valid competition when you are compromising structure and battery life. I would rather the iPhone get thicker so it can house a larger battery and be more sturdy.

it did but the hole was curved so oddly or something that other headphones didnt fit in. I remember buying an adapter back in the day for the 1st iPhone to fit my senheiser headphones

Quote:"The headphone socket on the 1st-generation iPhone is recessed into the casing, making it incompatible with most headsets without the use of an adapter"
