Yeah, now give ability to load open source models. I wouldn’t pay Google or Microsoft a cent for the crap they put out as Gen AI.

This whole story outrages me! I will never pay a subscription for something that I have no idea what it does which is rumored to be offered for a subscription three years from now! Apple is a failed company who is only doing this three years from now because they have no ideas!

When that happens you know Apple will just become another company. Apple has gone from strength to strength with Cook with less hiccups than when Jobs was at the helm.
Apple has already become just another company.

Maybe you're not old enough to remember when the iPad, MacBook Air, iPhone, and iPod were introduced. Apple's products were the ultimate product that everyone wanted. Now, Apple has nothing to differentiate itself as a tech leader.

Apple is no different than Samsung, Motorola, or even Google. There's no longer anything special about the iPhone, iPad, or Mac because other companies make devices just like them.

The difference between Steve and Tim is this: Steve didn't have to gouge customers to make Apple a rich company. Steve made the world a better place. Tim is just a puppet for the shareholders until a real tech leader takes over.

next will be Camera AI subscription
iMeesage AI subscription
Facetime AI sbscriptoin
Kyeboard AI subscribetion

:D

It’s going to take that long? Lol it just shows how behind everyone else Apple is. People are paying for ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini.

They already are another company. Under Cook’s direction they squandered tens of billions on a fruitless car project- they should have been building a search engine because their services revenue is about to take a 25% hit if Google is nailed to the wall (very likely). But like so many of their decisions they prioritize for glitz and not functionality. Apple allowed chiefs in the company to squander all the good faith built up by weaponizing their store against competition and strangling developer enthusiasm- and now the AVP is struggling because of their capricious often petty attitude around approvals. Their nonchalant attitude of disregard and inability to read the room garnered the scrutiny of governments and the ire of independent developers. It’s sad but the list goes on. Forestall would’ve been a visionary leader but he wasn’t playing the politics game that’s so important to Apple internally so instead we got stuck with an unimaginative bean-counter who is laser-focused on wringing every last cent from ever increasingly fed up customers and developers. This can’t continue indefinitely and sooner or later those chickens will come home to roost. I’d hardly say Cook is a glowing example to point at, outside of financials. He’s fundamentally changed Apple and I doubt Steve would have liked many of his decisions. Steve, for all his faults, had a strong vision and was a leader. He was willing to canibalize his own products to replace them with something ground-shifting. Cook would never and has never made such a strong decision. Cook is representative of all that is wrong with and all that I despise about modern Apple.
There is a lot to unpack here but I will address a couple of the glaring anti-Cook sentiments.

Firstly, some say Apple is ready to press the button on the new search engine, but costs stack up better at this moment by having Google play them $20B per year. And that is the only reason. People have no doubt they have a search engine almost ready, if it isn't already done.

The squandered, fruitless car project has no doubt helped them develop LiDar when NO-ONE else has used it in products like phones or products like the Vision Pro. Apple never develop a product without learning from it under Cook. So it can simply be chalked down to extremely valuable R&D.

Jobs messed up a lot, when things like the Sapphire Glass project that made next to zero benefits, other than throwing money away. Exceptional bad handling of Antenna Gate is just one of the many things he didn't do well.

I wouldn't call Forestall an idiot (12 years ago, so let it go), but he was plain weird and a massive ego. He had very little vision other than completely stuffing up Apple Maps putting them years behind, and failing to take any responsibility, saying the problems were ahem.. overblown. Oh, and his horrible skeuomorphic apps and fake leather binding on an electronic notepad. Visionary? lol. Arguably though he was fired, not for his mess-ups, but the way he wanted to control iOS and have it drive the future of the hardware instead of collaborating with them. You might call that politics, I call it not being a team player as friendly as he may have been to his mates. Cook fixed that. Forstall now puts his massive skill level into assisting with production of Broadway plays. Yeah he is awesome!

You forget that the Watch was developed under Cook (best selling watch in history). The Vision Pro was developed under Cook and anyone who actually uses it (sure, it cost a lot) think it is simply the best at what it does, bar none (except Zuckerberg of course 😂).

So you can continue to hate on Cook, but there is no one out there, with the possible exception of Jensen Huang who could rival cook in being the CEO of a company the size of Apple.

It will likely be years before Apple Intelligence has a compelling enough feature set that people will pay for…

In that case, is there a compelling reason customers should upgrade their phones? Is there a compelling reason Gurman‘s prediction is any more credible than say a person posting on Reddit?

Who is going to pay for the ads. If ChatGPT will go out and get your information in two seconds, by passing all the ads then advertisers will demand a solution; No one is seeing their ads.
In turn Apple will pass the charges to us. I just rather use AI on my own.

If they can include it with Apple iCloud perhaps. But as of this moment I really don’t feel the need personally to pay for A.I. 🤔 I know a lot of people are into it for making money & say you’re missing out, but it doesn’t interest me. I’m an artist, and I have issues with it for that reason. Trying to keep an open mind about it. I know it’s inevitable and is unstoppable at this point. I’m just not onboard at the moment.
Completely agree. It's amazing how many people in the 'creative' fields (I hate the word 'creative', most people are) will be out of work here. Even niche things like the VoiceOver industry are now going to be completely digital within 5 years. Illustrators - what need for them when you can ask for a design and then tune it yourself? But then I suppose that's just technology doing what technology does. I wonder if there will be a backlash?

Disappointing to hear that it will take at atleast 3 years for Apple Intelligence to be fully developed and for it to be available everywhere. At the same time happy to hear that Apple will not be charging for Apple Intelligence in the near future.

I skimmed through their presentation but from what I saw, all those features are already available for free elsewhere and have been for some time now. So what did I miss that would allow them to charge a fee for their “intelligent” features?
So many people here are skimming this article and missing the fact that Apple has said that all of the AI features that they have announced do far are free. The rumor, that was published last month and seems to be making the rounds again, is that at some point in the future, Apple may build in more advanced AI features and may for those features. They don’t need to start charging for features that are already free.

To early to tell. It can be used to drive device upgrades which is likely more lucrative. If they deliver compelling features the allow iterative device improvements to matter — like camera updates today.

Their core differentiator is moving more and more of the processing to the device it would be hard to justify a subscription for that. But if they made it extend the life and power of devices that might be compelling to some people. I’d see that as a “free for x years with a new device” subscription model in that scenario.

But they have to execute on compelling features first.

Definitely old enough 😂

Apple created a market under Jobs, no doubt and we have all benefitted enormously. And we know these products were copied, usually very very badly (thinking Zune, Galaxy Tablets etc), but those markets have matured, which is why it is hard to differentiate. You may remember when Eric Schmidt resigned from the Apple Board. That was a super smart move from Jobs to keep him on the Board so long wasn't it? 7 months after the launch of the iPhone, Schmidt released the first Android version.

Apple is no different than Samsung, Motorola, or even Google. There's no longer anything special about the iPhone, iPad, or Mac because other companies make devices just like them.

Sorry to debunk this:

Phone: but how many people actually use Samsung, Google or other phones as Pro video cameras? Apple ProRes is amazing and the systems people build now are very professional and used in a professional environment. I shot a wedding video recently just using the iPhone 15 Pro. Was low-key, but the quality was really good.

Watch: Apple has also developed and released the Watch which is simply the most popular watch in the world, and AVP which is at beginning of life and is fairing exactly like the Watch and the iPhone were in their first years.

Tablet: Samsung have only just re-released a tablet that is kind of comparable to the iPad, but still not nearly as capable. Show me one that is.

Computer: Ever heard of the M series chips? Everyone has been scrambling for the last 4 years to try and catch up. Actually, I need a windows machine for something niche, any recommendations that are as good as the MacBook Air? They haven't quite caught up after all this time. Windows is a dog on ARM and their emulator is apparently barely usable. I just bought an Intel PC for that niche job, HP 2 in 1. It is a joke compared to the same cost MacBook Air. I should have just paid for Parallels.

So many people here are skimming this article and missing the fact that Apple has said that all of the AI features that they have announced do far are free. Exactly. I think the difference, without going back and looking at the other article, is that Gurman has placed an arbitrary timeline on something that may never happen instead of just suggesting it was something Apple could do in the future. And as mentioned in the last thread, that these "potential subscription costs" would be on products or services that don't actually exist yet.

People can say they refuse to pay for services, but remember when there were people who would never "pay for a music subscription when they never get to keep the CD"? Most have moved over quite happily to Apple/Spotify/Amazon Music. We don't know what we don't know.

A lot of the posters may want to calm down a little bit. Nothing is happening now. We don’t know exactly how Apple’s AI features will turn out and what the next step in their development will be. This rumor is just saying that at some time in the future, Apple may decide to charge more for some advanced features. It isn’t saying that any of what you have seen so far is going to turn into a subscription feature. Apple will likely have free AI features and premium features and you will be able to decide if you want to pay for the premium features. That is not a new story.

It will likely be years before Apple Intelligence has a compelling enough feature set that people will pay for, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said in this week's Power On newsletter. Apple Intelligence is still so new that Gurman expects it will "take three years" for Apple to create a product that's worth charging for, and even that "may be the best-case scenario."

Apple-Intelligence-Feature-2.jpg

Gurman suggested last month that Apple's long-term plan is to develop something like Apple Intelligence+, with add-on features that users would pay a monthly fee to access. Apple already has a tiered subscription setup for iCloud, so Apple Intelligence could work similar to that.

iCloud provides 5GB of free storage to all users, but for a fee, iCloud+ subscription plans include more storage and also access to features like iCloud Private Relay. In the future, basic Apple Intelligence access could continue to be free, with more advanced features requiring a subscription. OpenAI and other companies charge for AI queries and image generation after a set free limit due to the computing power and costs associated with AI.

As of right now, the first Apple Intelligence features are only partially available in the iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 betas. Apple has added Writing Tools, some basic Siri improvements, smart replies in Messages and Mail, and a few other features like a Memory Maker option in Photos, but Image Playground, Genmoji, and the bulk of the Siri upgrades won't be coming until later in 2024 and 2025.

In addition to fully rolling out the first Apple Intelligence features that were announced at WWDC 2024, Apple still needs to work to expand the functionality to more countries, including China and the European Union. The features that Apple showed off in June likely won't all be available until 2025, and there's no word yet on when it might expand to more countries (including other languages), so it's not hard to see how it could take until 2027 or beyond to have a robust product.

As another reference point, Apple introduced Emergency SOS via satellite alongside the iPhone 14 in 2022, a feature that the company plans to eventually charge a fee to use, but it will be at least 2025 before the first iPhone owners have to pay for it. Apple's fee for Emergency SOS has not yet been announced.

When Apple does start charging for Apple Intelligence, it could be baked into existing iCloud+ plans or included as part of Apple One, Apple's subscription bundle. Counterpoint Research analyst Neil Shah recently speculated that Apple could charge between $10 and $20 for Apple Intelligence, with the fee rolled into an Apple One plan. The basic Apple One plan is priced at $19.95 per month right now, and it includes 50GB iCloud+ storage, Apple TV+, Apple Music, and Apple Arcade.

I hope Apple puts a option in the setting app to turn off AI. If they require a subscription for iPhone because of AI I'm heading back to Android.

First deliver on all the promises so far (especially regarding Siri), then we'll see...

Artificial intelligence should not be behind a paywall.
Neither should NYT or other news services. Or Netflix, or audio books, or education sites…. Etc etc etc….

Everything is behind a paywall. Google Search is a paywall, except for better results you pay Google with your location, buying habits, your email chains, your photos, your contacts etc….
