For those that are a bit too feint of heart to try this, don't want to void their AppleCare, or have a Unibody MB/MBP...

http://www.skinstyler.com/mac/apple-logo-cover-c-3.html?zenid=4be7aa754cb5db83427fec8ea32f93de

I just ordered the Vintage and Dark Blue logos yesterday. They take 5 days to manufacture, and 10 days to ship (15 days for Canada). And free shipping worldwide! I'll post pics when I get them...

Just a follow up. Don't order from these guys. The product is decent enough, but the cut of the logo isn't exact and you will see a white edge on at least one of the sides of the logo. And being a perfectionist, I could not live with it. If you can, then by all means go ahead with it. Also, it's very much a sticker and is not reusable. On top of that (yes there's more) all they've done is print an inkjet picture on some transparent adhesive material. If you need to lift an edge, the ink will come off. Oh well, $10 mistake... better than voiding my warranty... If anybody has any ideas on how somebody could do this without opening up their MacBook, please let me know.

Edit: I would officially like to retract those parts of my statement, but felt that the original should be left intact. SkinStyler is a great company to deal with. I just received a full refund from them without so much as emailing them. It seems they've read this thread and took it upon themselves to refund my money. They actually have a moneyback guarantee that I could have invoked myself, but I decided that $10 wasn't that much of a cost (and I wasn't fully aware of the guarantee. Guess I should read the fine print more often :p). I'm just glad to see that they're in touch with their customer base and are proactive about making sure we are 100% satisfied.

SkinStyler: I do hope you take my post as constructive criticism (though I do realize that it does come off as malicious), and I hope you only improve your product. I would love it if you could come up with a reusable vinyl version of your product that was cut out to more precisely fit the Apple logo. If (and hopefully when) you do make those changes, I would happily do business with you again.

I'd like to see a black Apple logo on alu.

EDIT: So I thought hey, may aswell make one, here's one I set up on photoshop in a minute.

That's pretty sweet looking! Well... minus the halo effect around the logo :p But for a one minute 'shop, that's not too shabby. I'm going to experiment with making my own decal. I've already pulled the Apple logo off of brandsoftheworld.com, and I've done a pencil rubbing of the logo from the top of my MB and scanned it. I'll fit the vector logo to the scan and try printing one off. And if that works, I may just get some window decal specialty transparencies and try making one of my own... Hopefully this works...

i personally do think it's would be more effective and safer to just do a precision cut vinyl decal to apply directly on the apple logo. :apple:

i like the concept though ;)

hmmm

totally not worth it, ppl go nutz enough when they see a mac alone why mod it for a visual affect thats not worth its weight in gold?

I think that the black on alu is so much more eye catching than white on alu..

Not to mention it makes it look evil o__o

If I get this to work, I may experiment with a black one too, cuz that mockup is looking better and better every time I see it.

I've got one of these at my college:
http://www.rolanddga.com/asd/products/cutters/stika/default.asp
We've got a huge range of colours, however, none of them are transparent. I'm gonna print off a glossy black one and stick it to my alu macbook (when I get it), the stickers come off really easily so offer quite a bit of versitily (could make a rainbow if I wanted). If it works out I can see if I can start shipping some of them!

Um, no, pretty much nobody. Most of us aren't in to disassembling a MacBook just to alter the logo. Cost:benefit ratio is seriously out of whack.

Cost benefit ratio shouldn't even come into it, god your only popping off a cover from the back of the screen, there isn't anything you can damage :apple:

These stickers are a waste of time.
I dont see what the fuss is, if Your doing a MBP all you remove is 2 screws and pop off the cover, you cant damage anything.

The MB has about 10 screws to do, and oh you have to be careful of the plastic clips. God i'd hate to see any of you open up the other half of your machines, where there are things you can **** up!

Well, if you'd be so kind as to read my signature, you'd realize that my MB is a Unibody MB. And nothing that I've read anywhere, including all of the teardowns and threads on this forum, even come close to hinting that the screen can be easily disassembled to perform that mod. Also, some of us have AppleCare that we've purchased on our machines that we wouldn't want to risk voiding if in case something DID happen. I'm comfortable enough around computers to do that mod, and if my AppleCare was up on my MBP I would. So stop jumping to conclusions and try to see the other point of view before saying anything. Otherwise you just come across as a jerk that's just trolling the forums instead of somebody with something constructive to contribute.

Okay guys... here goes...

Heh yeah following me chickening out from doing it the first time round, I'm gonna get round to doing it properly once I find another sheet of acetate. The only thing now is I'm not sure I want to go for a deep blue or a mid green colour. I mean a fresh, mid green would be awesome on a BlackBook but at the same time I like blue... several of my friends want me to go for a red one but I'd lose out on the novelty because I'm colourblind.

I'm heading in to the art department at university later today (on that note I need a shower and to go to sleep, its five past one in the morning) so I can pick up some green and blue acetate and see which I prefer over the logo before I put it behind the logo.

For those interested I'll probably be using 3000 grain sandpaper to remove the white, I think 2000 would leave visible scratching.

Photographs in less than 24 hours folks!

Also, a little sidenote to those ordering acetate prints from the internet, you do know that any colour laser printer will print on acetate without problem and will cost you far less than ordering some in. Colour prints at the Post Office are 40p/sheet, which is like what, 75¢? You'll easily get at least 8 different images to one sheet...

Get off your high horse muppet! I am an Apple Service Technician, so i do know what i'm talking about. There is no difference with the unibody and the older model, so disassembly doesn't even come into it, keep the old apple logo and if you ever had to have it repaired just put it back.

TIP: Read the smallprint on your Apple Care Warranty

Alright then, I'll give you the benefit of a doubt... Would you be able to provide a link or possible explanation as to how to pry the display apart? ifixit.com doesn't provide a complete disassembly of the display, and the pictures found here state that it's extremely difficult to do this without cracking the glass display:
http://www.missionrepair.com/Articles.asp?ID=178

Also, having read the AppleCare Product Plan PDF, I found this excerpt:
b. Limitations. The Plan does not cover:
[...]
(ii) Damage to the Covered Equipment caused by accident, abuse, neglect, misuse (including faulty
installation, repair, or maintenance by anyone other than Apple or an Apple Authorized Service
Provider), unauthorized modification, extreme environment (including extreme temperature or
humidity), extreme physical or electrical stress or interference, fluctuation or surges of electrical
power, lightning, static electricity, fire, acts of God or other external causes;
So unless I missed something, I'm really not sure which "fine print" you were speaking of. Please do clarify for me so that I am not so confused. Thank you kindly.

...I say here goes... I mean WHSmiths is getting its delivery a day late. Again. Acetate tomorrow then... and then it'll be 'here goes'!

Staples and the life sell vinyl book covering stuff for kids' textbooks. I know we have a ton in my basement, in every translucent color and then some patterns. Yeah it won't look AS cool, but if I end up deciding to get a MacBook, this thread has put the idea in my head of trying out some of this plastic over the logo. Maybe an exacto knife, some patience, and a couple of tries later, I'll have something decent.

I agree though, taking off the cover and such just to do something this trivial is dumb. You risk so much, and anything can happen while that screen is out.

I have to agree with Wahoo. This just doesn't seem worth it. Sanding off the white paint on the Apple logo and Peeling apart the LCD just to add an inch and a half of "color"? I'd never even think of it. If I really was that set on adding color to my MB I'd get a sheet of transparent vinyl and use a stencil to cut it with an Xacto knife. Plus, what happens when you get sick of the color and you want your old logo back? Now it's just a dingy piece of plastic.

Here we have it... The MacBook Green and Black.

MacBook%20Green-filtered.jpg

That picture looks a little odd because the room is lit by an energy saving light bulb (university requirements, bleah). The Apple appears far greener in person. The sticker on the MacBook is the band logo of Scar Symmetry, a Scandinavian melodic metal band.

For people who sanded their white bit out... I'm not sure why you did this. When I took the screen off the black foam bit that holds the white bit in place peels back to reveal that the white is just a vinyl sheet. Dead easy to peel off.

Just finished mine about 10 minutes ago. Took maybe 45 minutes in total. My friend is currently finishing the sanding with some 2000 grit sandpaper for his to be red.

Here's mine.

I had a red apple logo on my old Blackbook, but I didn't have to dismantle the compy for the effect.

A seller on eBay was selling apple logo vinyl cuts in 5 or six different colors. I am so mad that he doesn't deal anymore. I want one for my Aluminum Macbook. My friend got a blue one from him. We got a lot of comments on our off-colored glowing apples. :)

His name was bjhautoparts if anyone wants to contact him for us. haha.

:) I have done this on my iBook G4 and it was very easy. Red acetate x2 did the trick. I want to do the same on my iBook G3 but for the life of me I can't find the correct driver to remove the screws holding the lid on. Any help would be appreciated.

so would it be as easy as getting the shape creating the things in photoshop and maybe getting it made at some Decals place for cars?
we have a glass decal store here and im thinking that if i just go there with my laptop and the design they should be able to do it heh
now what design to do! lol

I really want to do this to my MBP. I ordered both the filter and a sticker. I have not found a guide yet on how to disassemble the MBP 13" 2009. =(
