It only works in the Webkit based browsers...i.e. Safari and derivatives. It doesn't work in FF or in Camino, AFAIK. Does that help?

You need to change the font to one that supports that character on all systems, something like one of the Lucida fonts (I think it was): 

To this day I don't know what the symbol after the command symbol means.

I think he's making a joke and refering to the apple symbol since this thread is about it showing up as a ?, otherwise refering to lack of knowledge.
