I get 1 bar of service at home but generally EE for one is very poor at my house. Never has it dropped any calls. I never use 4G at home as I have wifi and data speeds at my home are poor. Even on my x it was no different and on my 7 plus too. EE is just poor until I leave the house.

No issues anywhere else though.
EE, which country are you in? I wonder if this is primarily an issue with phones sold in the US?

Did they tell you to goto the Apple store or you carrier? I was just chatting with Apple support yesterday and they admitted its a known issue and have their engineers working on a fix. Who knows when that will happen.

I just want to get my phone replaced and hope the replacement has better reception. I'm out of my 14 day window however.

Told me to go to the Apple Store because I’m over the 14 day return window.

Complete and utter disaster. LTE never goes beyond 2-3 bars, wifi is spotty, missed calls and dropped calls and now GPS barely works.
I’m on my second iPhone XS Max 512GB and heading to Best Buy tomorrow to switch for number 3.
Apple is of no help whatsoever and looked at me like I was crazy when I walked into the store saying it’s the first they hear of it. Complete BS. This is a huge issue and for people who use their phones for work 95% of their time like me it’s a very serious problem. I no doubt that the third one I will be getting tomorrow will have the same issues. 2300$ (Canadian) for a phone thats essentially useless.
When’s the last time ya’ll have seen edge in an area that has perfection reception.

Hello, first time poster.

I too have complaints about my iPhone XS (256GB). I previously used the 6S, which was still serving me well. However, I wanted an upgrade. I upgraded on the 16th of this month. My device never seems to hold 4 bars of LTE, and I've compared it to my iPAD Air 2. Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't the iPhone have stronger radios than the iPAD?

I contacted VzW and Apple, last weekend. This has been the first time EVER I have needed to contact Apple Support. Apple says they are "aware of the issue" and "no longer need to collect data/information on it." They essentially said "stayed tuned for a software update." They seem to be standing firm in not sending a replacement.

So I went to the VzW retailer to get one within the 14-day window. I got my replacement last Sunday, but still haven't seen an improvement with the replacement.

The device itself is an improvement in every way, save for the Cell Signals.

Well, that sounds promising. Hopefully an update is in the works. And hopefully, it fixes the problem! I'm eagerly wanting to update to a xs but just can't in good conscience with this hanging unresolved.

I wish to you the best! Btw, did you get a carrier specific model or the sim-free?

Thanks
Was Sim free purchased from Apple directly.

Did they run any tests on your phone? Or just took your word and replacing it?

They ran a diagnostic on my phone. Told me the ‘good news’ was it wasn’t a hardware issue. I told them I had reinstalled all my software etc and they then suggested a replacement.

Ah, the good old connectivity issues.. weather it be updates it breaks it, or just a new model, Apple has had its fair share of runs on this.

Have Apple actually acknowledged the issue and that they are working on a fix??
Should we expect anything with 12.1?

I'm in the process of having my handset replaced at the moment - the online support rep told me it was the first he had heard of such an issue. I directed him to the Apple Forum threads, to which he didn't even respond.

I went into the Apple Store yesterday, the support rep said he had never heard of the issue (although his facial expression was a little 'off', making me think he knew more then he was letting on).

Wouldn't it be better customer service for Apple to acknowledge that they are working on a fix and its coming soon, rather then keeping users who paid a shedload of cash for their 'flagship' phone in the dark?? I mean seriously, is that too much to ask for?? I appreciate there will be teething problems with new tech, but to state that there is a fix being worked on isn't a failure, its a recognition that an issue exists, they are aware, and they are working on a fix. Its better customer support. Just don't treat us like idiots and completely ignore the fact!

I think 12.1 will be released tomorrow, but the beta has been out for a while and if it solved the issue we'd have know.
Are you on the 14 days return period? I think the Xr doesn't have the problem, the antenna is different and I didn't read anything about reception. If you can you may return your Xs and go for the Xr if they replace your phone and you still have the issue

Unfortunately I'm a month into ownership.
I don't have it as bad as some others it seems. On WiFi I'm fine. Most of the time on Cellular I'm also OK, its just some areas where I knew I received good signal with my X, the XSM just wont provide any data at all, even though the handset reports a good 4G connection!

So you can see some bars on the toolbar but you can't surf the web etc?

Correct.
Most of the time everything is fine, but at some places where I knew I got good signal and data with my X, my XSM will not even let me open Google - event though I have 2-3 bars of signal AND the 4G icon showing.

And you can't fix by switching ON and OFF airplane mode?

No that does nothing.....

My friend was sitting next to me just last week, browsing comfortably on his X (same network provider).
Rather embarrassing to have the 'latest and greatest' and not be able to do anything with it.....

Well, if your friend was on the same carrier you have the proof your iPhone has some problems.
It's weird you can see bars so the phone things the signal is strong enough but you can't receive data. It would be better to see low bars or no signal at all, so at least you know what to expect. I assume iMessage and Whatsapp don't work in those scenario, so you glance at your phone, you see a good signal and you don't know you're actually out of reach.

Exactly!
Will test the same once upgrading to ios 12.1 hopefully in the next few days. Not holding my breath RE there being any 'fix' for the issue in 12.1 though.
If not then a replacement handset is on its way as well!

This is not right. When you buy a new phone at this price, it should at least have the same reception as your prior phone.

My 2nd Max did this - would show 3 bars and LTE but couldn’t use Safari or even send a text. My new X can be in an area with 1 bar and 4G and I can still use it.

Can you receive phone calls and sms (no iMessage)?
As far as I know they sometimes work while 3G/4G isn't working.

I could not receive or text, even SMS. This was in areas where I had service with my 6S Plus. Literally would do nothing cellular related at times. And other times when it was working was spotty at best. Never worked as good as my Plus or my new X. When I activated my new X, missed calls and voicemails from 2 days prior showed up that hadn’t ever surfaced on the Max. So I wouldn’t have even known what I was missing.

With network throttling that can occur it is really hard to make these types of comparisons now as devices are no longer equal.

Was the person on a higher privileged plan that you?
Have you already used tons of data in your current billing cycle and are being throttled?
Perhaps they were connected to a different tower?
Perhaps the throttling gods decided to throttle your device versus theirs?
On and on ...

On the flip side though I hear your pain. It’s just the provider could be just as at fault in this situation.

I hear ya - but no, I'm on a 20GB data plan and rarely go over 5-10Gb to be honest. I've been on the same data plan, using the same towers in the same locations, for at least the past 3 years or so. In addition, if I was being throttled, I don't see why it would only be in certain areas.
Its not a cell tower issue - one place I visit weekly, and at the same spot I get no data consistently, every week in that spot, whereas it was perfectly fine with my X.

I'm completely ruling out any carrier issue considering my X was perfectly fine. I have been with the same carrier for over 10 years without issue. Bit of a co-incidence it should start when I move to a XSM......

Did you solve the issue with a replacement handset?
Or you dropped back to the X?

Saying that, the X is hardly a 'drop back' at this point when it comes to cellular....... lol
