OK, I just read the WSJ article. Looks like this topic only refers to the 3G, not the 3GS. In my case, my 3GS has been suffering from substantial slowdowns since I upgraded to iOS 4. Can anyone else corroborate this behavior with the 3GS?

Thanks.

really?? have not had an issue with my 3gs. in fact apart from the occasional app crash (this is more the apps fault), have not had one issue at all...

Mine's ok!

I got the iPhone 4 as soon as it came out because my 3G had become so slow after 2 years of usage. Last weekend after hearing all these reports of how bad it was, i thought to dig it out of the back of the junk drawer and wipe it and install a fresh upgrade of iOS4.0.1 and jailbreak it to work with my work Docomo sim card.

It runs much better than it did before, I think having it fresh, it runs much more smoothly than it did on 3.12.

I don't need many aps for work phone anyway, most important are the exchange email, calendar and phone!

I wish Apple could make the tasks sync with exchange, it sucks having the blackberry being able to and still no iPhone! Come on Apple! I thought you were serious about corporate clients! Because they are starting to take the iPhone seriously.

Huh, I didn't think there were this many people with 3G's having trouble....Mine is behaving EXACTLY like that parody video. Safari is completely unusable, even on a good wifi connection.

I downgraded my 3G, because of the freezes and the lag. Thank goodness that I had a 3G or I would've been stuck with iOS 4.

Same here. So slow and glitchy was the new iOS 4 on my 3g that I had to go back to the old OS.
I'm surprised it's taken Apple so long to address this.
Apple is becoming almost Windowesque with all of the problems as of late, they may need to SLOW DOWN and not spit out so many products so close together.

jack of all trades, master of none:confused:

Using my 3G is paintful now, but due to an unforseen financial expense, it seems I'm stuck with it for another year.

Typing a reply in a forum post is just not worth it - the keyboard just won't play ball.

Unless you only have one folder at the top of each page the animation to open it is unbearably slow. Try to open the default Utilities folder and I'm sure you'll agree.

Any audio played through the iPod app will generally skip if you try to do anything else such as browse in Safari.

Animation of homescreen icons upon unlocking the phone is horribly laggy. While I like the new animation with the dock aswell it's horrible how it underperforms at it.

Settings is an app I hate having to open now, Browsing the Mail, Contacts, Calendars is incredibly laggy for what is.

Messages is a pretty painful experience all round aswell.

So to sum up, it's horrendously slow for how much 3G users will benefit from it. (But I like having documents stored in iBooks as opposed to third parties).

My 3GS was pretty amenable to iOS4 at first, but recently it's been slowing down and getting hotter during normal use. Games load much more slowly than before and a few of them are even a bit choppy. My girlfriend's 3G is almost unusable.

My 3GS/iOS4 offers excellent response. But the battery life is the exact opposite of excellent.

In my 20-minute morning commute on the train, pre iOS4, I would arrive at work with ~96% battery life remaining. Reading a few emails, macrumors, etc. Nothing heavy.
After the update, the same activities over the same duration yield a battery life of ~78%. And that's being careful to quit out of any unused apps. And I'm having to charge my phone around lunch tine if I think I'll be out & about after work.
Super frustrating. To the point of advising friends to not upgrade.
Would be nice if they were a soft fix...

Bitter much?? Hmmm??

Geez, trolls are everywhere today!

Not trolling, I only speak when something totally bugs me, I have friends with Droid and they're a little miffed about not being able to upgrade on a regular basis. Nope, not bitter at all, just trying to help others with the 3G on iOS 4. Seriously, cold boot worked pretty good, give it a shot!

Discussion forums at Apple, MacRumors, and elsewhere have been filling with reports from users experiencing problems with system responsiveness, battery drains, and overheating.
Obviously something is running in the background that should not be, because there are times when the performance is acceptable. The battery drain could easily be accounted for because iPhone 3G running slow (you actually have to use the device longer to get the same thing done), plus whatever extra process(es) are causing the slowdown add to the drain. I have not noticed the overheating, but once again, if the CPU has additional load that would be the cause.

I have tried turning off about half of the Spotlight Search options, as some have suggested (I really don't need to do text searches in my music, podcasts and movies). Since doing so, I have not seen the severe lag issues, so far anyhow.

It certainly would not surprise me is Spotlight is a factor here. I have had similar Spotlight-related performance problems on the Mac in the past.

I have two iPhone 3G (one working as as phone the other just as an itouch like) and have no issues at all with the IOS 4 update. There are lots of apps on the one that I use as a phone and little apps on the itouch like one.

iOS 4 on 3GS - Unacceptable

My 'upgrade' to iOS4 on a 3 GS has gone terribly. I no longer can sync music via iTunes to my iPhone. New calendar items entered on the iphone don't push through mobileme to my outlook. Contacts won't syncronize. You would think that this was Vista!!!

Now 3G Has No Wifi

I had my wife upgrade to iOS4 a week after upgraded my 3GS so she could use the folder options. Bad decision. Now her 3G won't find or connect to any wifi networks, including the one in our apartment. Finally stopped by the Upper Westside Apple Store to see what we could do to restore wifi. Apple Genus said that it looked like the wifi chip had been fried and could only recommend we upgrade to iPhone 4. Not the answer I was looking for... If Apples recommended software update harms their device, shouldn't they be responsible to provide a fix, warranty or no warranty?

I had mixed feeling regarding to iOS4 on 3G. Most of time, it runs well. Everything is more or less the same with iOS3. Some apps runs even better than iOS3, such as Linkedin, engadget. But there are, definitely, sometimes 3G will struggle a lot running iOS4, especially some basic function that iPhone come with at very beginning. I'm saying function like phone, text, safari, photo.

If some 3'rd party app, run on 3G, can benefit from adapting iOS4, why not those basic function? So it lead me to believe Apple still have much room to improve performance of iOS4-lite on 3G.

That's just it: The iPhone 3G was released in July of 2008. Two years. That's the standard length of the contract that you sign with AT&T for service! Surely it's not out of line to expect a device to be fully supported for as long as you are required to continue to pay for its use.

Well, you know, the 3G was still on sale just a few months ago!

My phone has had wifi trouble every time I restart it I have to reset the wifi network, I've also had trouble with the screen not being responsive I had been blaming on hardware maybe Its a software problem.

My 3GS is running okay. I would say the battery life has been greatly diminished since the 4.0.1 update. And I know I'm not the only one suffering from that problem.

Same here. My battery life has been greatly diminished on my 3GS. I also get very slow response if I missed a call or a text sometimes. I can barely turn the screen on and unlock the phone, everything is delayed by 3-5 seconds.

Yes, I have to agree

Yes, I have to agree, the iOS 4.0 made my iPhone 3G much slower. However, in the eyes of Steve Jobs and Apple, since I purchased my iPhone nearly 2 years ago (08/08/2008), its ancient.

Its Apple's way of saying "Congratulations, your iPhone is now out of contract with AT&T, so upgrade to a new iPhone 4 and renew your commitment with AT&T for 2 more years."

Meanwhile, Sprint is offering G4 when AT&T's 3G network is ho-hum here in Peoria, IL (metro pop 360,000). All the while Sprint is offering G4 -- which includes WiMax. What's WiMax? It means that if you are staying at a hotel that either has no or slow WiFi, or charges $10/day for use you can simply carry a WiMax box in addition to your laptop and Sprint G4 phone and surf the web all you want on your laptop. Yes, laptop teathering ... and good for up to 4 devices which should be more than enough for any family or business travelers. Of course, at this time, in the state of Illinois Sprint G4 is only available in Chicago. However, I believe that AT&T's G3 only became available about a year ago here in Peoria.

Anyhow, my iPhone 3G is SIGNIFICANTLY slower due to the "upgrade" to iOS 4.0. I'm ready for a speed-up and believe that this update was obviously rushed out the door to launch iPhone 4. Apple has a habit of their lowest common denominator being the hardware that shipped in the last 6 months, anything else is ancient and needs to be replaced. Easy to say if you work at Apple, but not otherwise.

official downgrade

3G does not work properly with IOS4.

Apple needs to provide an official downgrade for all Iphone 3G users or make IOS4 lighter than it is.

just today i was writing a message and someone called me, the phone just stopped working for quite a long time. Could not answer the call could not finish the message. Everything I do I have to tap/click two three times over, (like the video example). For those that are telling people to turn spotlight off etc I have already turned off everything that I could remember with not much improvement.

I asked Vodafone for a second card for the same number and put it on an old Nokia. At the moment I use both phones as the 3G is so slow.

An official downgrade for me would suffice.

Well, I guess it’s about time for another iPhone press conference. I'm sure Steve will tell us the problem has been blown out of proportion and that all Smart Phones suffer from the same thing. He may likely offer a free downgrade until the end of September. After that, you’ll either have to buy an iPhone 4 or disable iTunes.

Slow down fixed with iOS 4.01

When I upgrade my iPhone 3G to iOS 4, I felt it considerably slower. Had no problem with battery life or heating though.
After upgrading to iOS 4.01 the system performance came back to normal.
Just wating for iPhone 4 to be lauched in Brazil.
