Yep... that is my 3G performance in a nutshell with iOS4. At first, I gave them the benefit of the doubt that the problem lied in iOS4 was set to optimize the faster processors of the 3GS and 4 models. Now, I'm sure they didn't go back and examine the shortfalls it impact the slower one, all before they release the new iOS in the market. It would have been better recommendation to add the iPhone 3G to the list of "DO NOT UPGRADE".

true

iOS 4 was clearly not the best choice for the iPhone 3G users and I would've downgraded if it were not for the folders feature, which I find terribly useful. The speed problem improved a bit after I restarted the device, but in everyday use, this issue can be annoying. However, I have not observed a power problem. It's about the same as with previous version (and of course, it sucks! :) I hope Apple will fix things with a next update, because I certainly don't want to buy a new device, since I still do my job with iPhone 3G...

yep... i've been having problems since day 1 of d/l iOS 4. I now hate my iPhone.

I just figured this was Apple's way of getting me to go out and buy the new iPhone.

Am I the only one the only Apple faithful whose lost faith recently?

1) July 2008 -> July 2010 (now almost august) = 2 years. Sure, you may have gotten your phone after that, but you could even get a 3G in 2009 if you were cheap. Where do you draw the line? I think 2 years from initial release is PLENTY of support, especially since TWO models have been released since then.

I'm not sure if I'd call getting a 3G in 2009 cheap. I went to buy an iPhone this April. I didn't want to wait until June for the new model. I am happy I got the 3GS instead of the 3G. I was offered a 3G instead (keep in mind, this is 2010).

Earth to Willie Wonka: GIVE UP THE TOYS AND MAKE CUTTING EDGE COMPUTERS

That video is priceless. GIVE UP THE TOYS AND MAKE EXPENSIVE CUTTING EDGE COMPUTERS THAT ARE WORTH THE BIG BUCKS AGAIN.

Try... uh... some that won't just sit there when you put a FOUR YEAR-OLD Blu-ray disc in them... and have the NEWEST video cards... and FW 1600 and 3200 and USB 3.0 and THEN MAKE YOUR PRO-APP SOFTWARE USE ALL THOSE CORES?

Like Logic? FCS? Not rocket science.

Unless you're Willie Wonka.

Strangely enough a little slowness on my 3G is really my only complaint. The thing barely sips off the battery. I occasionally get a snap in the animation when I close out an application. I also notice that my calendar alerts cause the calendar app to load a little more slowly than usual. However, other than those two things (mild inconveniences at best), my 3G runs iOS 4 as good as 3.

My 3GS doesn't have any of those problems but gulps down battery charge like a man dying of thirst. Every update requires a restore to bring the battery use into something even vaguely like what I had before the iOS 4 upgrade.

I still love my Macs, but the past few months of iPhone have been sheer disappointment.
  1. Apple tells me as a developer, that I can no longer choose what programming languages and toolsets I can use to develop iPhone apps.
  2. Apple releases iOS 4 which drags my iPhone 3G to a halt
  3. Apple tells me they've been lying to me about my signal strength for the past 2 years, and releases a software update whose sole purpose is to "fix" that

And that's never-minding their pettiness and kludge fix for the iPhone 4 debacle. I mean seriously, my phone has been telling me the wrong signal strength for the past 2 years, and nobody from Apple noticed???

I'd love to switch to an Android phone, but I'm going to get kicked yet one more time by Apple. Apple hides their OS X sync-related APIs from developers, and intentionally breaks attempts by developers to provide easy to use sync solutions.

In 3 years, Apple has figured out how to treat their customers just as crappy as the rest of the mobile phone companies do.

Definitely slow

 I sure have this problem. VERY ANNOYED!! They need to address this issue ASAP. I have no time to wait, redial, reload, recharge, etc.

Phone is definitely slower with 4.0

My phone is terribly slower then previously. Ever since I upgraded to ios 4.0 on my 3G it takes much longer to run apps on my phone. 9/10 times when I attempt to open up the settings app on my phone it’ll take 30+ seconds to complete. I’ve noticed that when I’m playing music while the display is asleep, I’ll attempt to turn on the display but it takes forever for the screen to pop up to type in my password. Finally when I do successfully put in my password the album view for my phone is always appearing and so I have to wait for the phone to calibrate it’s position to realize that the phone is in a vertical position and not a horizontal one. SMS and contacts takes a million years to open and when they do, there very buggy. Typing on my phone is very laggy, sometimes I can finish typing a whole sentence before it displays what I’ve typed. I’m very furious with Apple and they need to come up with a fix for 3G owners.

People losing battery like it's going out of style on 3GS or 4, trying closing apps in the multi-task tray. Apparently some of them can't be left open without trashing your battery life.

I disabled all of the Spotlight Search items on my 3G (which was running like a beached whale on downers) and it seems to be a lot more responsive now. I'll keep playing with it to see if it stays responsive.

this might work..

OK, I just read the WSJ article. Looks like this topic only refers to the 3G, not the 3GS. In my case, my 3GS has been suffering from substantial slowdowns since I upgraded to iOS 4. Can anyone else corroborate this behavior with the 3GS?

Thanks.

try closing out some of the apps that are multitasking..something tells me that eventually phones are going to get buggy from the dozens of apps multitasking down there for no reason...apple should have made a way to select which app multitasks without doing it automatically.

Yeah, trying to get a call to answer, and sometimes even trying to unlock the phone has been an issue at times with my 3GS with iOS 4.0.1.

Figured is was just a fluke - now I see.

I'd get an iPhone 4 if it wasn't for that darn AT&T contract...

I fixed this by opening up the phone app, holding the sleep button until the red slider came up, then held down the home button till the phone app closed back to home screen, next time i opened the phone app, it's like it started the phone app "fresh" and was responsive
i've seen the phone calls be unanswerable, i've been unable to end a call, unable to press any functions while within the phone call
Do you know how embarassing it is to leave a voicemail with a client only to struggle for 2 minutes trying to disconnect the call, with the whole incident recorded?

Not sure if anyone's mentioned it yet, but I had the battery life and overheating problems on a 16GB 3GS, so its not limited to just the 3G (although its obviously a much more widespread issue for 3G users).

I took mine into an Apple store after making an appointment, and although they didn't find any errors with the diagnostic tools, some of the usage stats didn't add up (like 6 hours of use on 13% of battery drain??? ie phone was running crap while it was locked in a dock charging...). Ended up getting a replacement which has 3.1.3 on it. Won't be updating to iOS4 until there's confirmation that 4.1 actually fixes the issues.

Strange. After I upgraded my 3G to iOS 4, it became more responsive and is faster than before. Also, battery life increased markedly. I get an extra day out of my battery now.:)

LOL - what total fanboy BS. I assume you're discounting the inherent design flaw included with every single one of them?

Given the release of all the new products the other day, this has continued to be an appalling month for Apple.

Did you happen to notice Apple's financials? Yes, a very appalling month!

Since upgrading to iOS 4, I've been relentless in shutting down all apps from the multi-task tray before pressing the standby button. Even after phone calls. I turn off 3G when I'm at work, and I only have push email for two accounts and those are set to every 30 minutes. I only turn Wi-Fi on when I'm doing anything more than email or a quick check of a web page and even then I immediately turn wi-fi off when I'm done. I might try disabling spotlight since I don't use that feature at all anyway.

No one cared about the bars. How many times, before the i4 came out, did you ask exactly how many dBM some number of bars represent? How much test equipment for measuring dBM do you have for comparison?

You can use almost any programming language you want (I ported a LISP interpreter to my iPhone). Apple doesn't have to sell such stuff in their store.

iOS 4.0 slow on a 3G? Vista slow on an old PC? Will Snow Leopard run at all on my PowerMac?

4.1 works MUCH better on the 3G.

I installed 4.1 beta and it works much better... back to the good old days... but upgrading this weekend to the iPhone 4. So my wife will enjoy 4.1...

I've noticed some nastiness with iOS4. My 3G has been so slow at times that I have been unable to answer calls, the SMS program crashes frequently (particularly if I have a text conversation open when the device is locked and I get a new text conversation from a different person). The new update helped a bit as does regularly syncing and rebooting my phone. It's a pain, but it still works. I'll likely get the iPhone 4 after the white one is out.
