Hope they add it user recognition. It would suck to have my child interrupt my channel changing experience...

Well, I guess the speech recognitions will be not "always on", like it is not on the iPhone 4s actually.. ;)

it is becoming clear that Mr. Jobs was talking about Siri, Apple’s new artificial intelligent software on the iPhone 4S.

Really? It is becoming clear? How exactly is it becoming clear, sounds like pure speculation. :D

Shouting "SHOW ME PORN" through open windows at houses where they have an Apple television will then become my new hobby.

Just the addition of a mic on the remote control would work better than a clumsy headset :p

Remote? What remote? Steve hated remotes. I would think that the mic would be built into the set, like other Apple products. Just sit back and talk. You could probably get more control and features via an iDevice. But for most people, Siri on the TV could do much of what they need. This is a great idea that's been a long time in coming.

If it was reasonably priced and in the 46'+ range, I'd be all over this. I have a 46' Samsung now that I really want to move it to my bed room, but I'd like to wait until the end of 2012 to replace it. This rumor would fit perfectly with my replacement plan.

The article headline is a lot more authoritative than the content warrants. This is speculation, not certainty.

That said, I'm really curious what this will be like, if it happens. The speculation goes in a million different, mutually-exclusive directions.

When your mate is asleep on the sofa: "Siri, play loud explosions from YouTube and set volume to max".

Considering the 27 inch display that they are currently selling is $999, I have a feeling that this TV is going to be at least $2,000. Maybe higher.

I'm getting one.

Figuring out the TV is one of the biggest problems in households. The technology that has come out to help with that only brings more complications. I think Apple has a good shot at coming out with a better TV for the common user.

I don't really get what advantage it would be to build this into a TV set instead of making it a set-top box. Then people could choose the TV with the picture they like best instead of relying on Apple's choice.

I'm with you on this. I'm planning a projector system for my basement home theater, and would love this functionality in a set-top box. Really doubt I'd buy a TV, though, unless they come out with a great projector, too.

Modular?

If the release cycle is like the iPhone and the features are added just as quickly, I could see discarded Apple TVs piling up in landfills rather quickly when everyone wants to upgrade every year or two.

Hopefully the hardware is robust enough, like a Mac, where you can get by for 5 to 7 years between hardware upgrades.

I know it would be uncharacteristic of Apple, but they could make the device modular. After a year or two you can spend a couple hundred for a new module, pop the old one out, Craigslist or toss it, then slide the new one in.

Sounds cool, but I'm afraid of what would happen if a family tries to watch TV and it goes
"Play Sesame Street!"
"No, let's watch Dancing with the Stars!"
"I want to watch the Broncos game!"

How will it know which person to listen too? Also, how will it know to not listen to the dialog on the TV shows/music, etc.?

Just like how it does on the iPhone, press and hold a button to activate Siri.

I don't really get what advantage [...]

Easy, if you want it you have to buy it from Apple and Apple will enter in a new market. ;) (and since you are here you know how Apple knows to be convincing with our poor, manipulated minds :D)

"This is Mom. Play the History Channel on my daughter's TV."

"She is watching 'Jersey Shore.' Shall I proceed?"

"Yes."

..."Mom WTF!"

:p

Exactly. I've witnessed personally 3 kids who all want to watch different channels all shouting at each other about changing channels.

Good luck :)

I wish people would learn to start selling their old stuff rather than throwing it in the trash. It is such a waste.

And just about as you are going to reach your climax you shout "Oh God" and it changes over to the Church and Worship channel.

Nice.
