To be honest I am unsure of the value of having someone curate a playlist. Especially when their tastes in music isn't likely to truly match my own. Now it would be interesting if they used artists recommendation to surface new/upcoming unknowns in the industry, but that doesn't seem likely.

well, you can create playlists and other people can subscribe to you.. as in, there are a crapton of playlists available to listen to.. not just a handful of famous people's playlists..

you'll find people who have similar tastes as you except they're probably way more nerdy/knowledgeable about the specific genre than you (unless you yourself are the nerdy one with good taste.. then you might start becoming a more known curator with lots of subscribers)..
but other people will be feeding you the unknowns in their playlists.. the value in having a curated playlist is that (talented) people are able to apply the x-factor which isn't possible with algorithms etc.. there's more of a chance of you saying 'damn, that was a good playlist' as opposed to mostly saying 'damn, that was a good song'

I have enjoyed the few iTunes Guest DJ stations I have listened to. It's a great evolution from the Celebrity Playlists from years before. I didn't particularly like it when they played it safe and just list current stuff though. Otherwise, I have ended up buying a few albums because of them.

I'm sure they're looking at bringing in other people onboard too. The iTunes Festival is coming up, so maybe they're going to get all those guys to record shows.

Music changes very quickly, and so does the audience. I can say that when I was 14, I wasn't listening to the stuff I was at 16, and I continue to move farther away from a lot of it now that I'm 26.

If the industry ever recovers, Apple wants to still be on top, so they have to play along with the other people trying to innovate in the space.

We have to remember that it goes beyond pop and hip hop too. They focus on it because those are the hardest customers to target. Those of us who like independents, alternative, and rock are instant customers. We don't have a problem trying out something new because we are always wanting something new.

Sorry that you're finding this out late. It's been this way for years, but they used to just stick to the PRSI forums and spread their ignorance there.

Now, it seems, they can replace "certain" words with others yet keep the same connotation, call other ethnic groups animals, and compare them to lesser species and get away with it . . . . all on front page news.

I'm glad to see that Apple Inc. thinks differently . . . no pun intended.

I occasionally go to the PRSI threads to inform myself who I should add to my ignore list. It helps.

Well, anyway, those curated playlists are just one minor detail of the overall offer.
Based on what one can read, it might be much different from what we can imagine.

Dude I am completely shocked out how many racists are on this board. I literally had no idea. Goes to show you how much times are changing. The world is moving on. America is moving on from racism, and all the leftover racists have nowhere to hide now so they are flooding every comment board on every website they can find. It's ridiculous.

That's not for me to say.

My apologies, I realise I put you in a spot.

If you answered yes, you'd look daft / incredibly arrogant.

If you answered no, you'd look like you were backtracking.

The answer of course is no, and taste in music is entirely subjective.

Your Beethoven / Crazy Frog example was ridiculously extreme, so didn't really tell us anything.

What about a different couple of songs to more to help me learn / understand more about good and bad music. Are these good or bad:

Congregation by the Foo Fighters - Good or bad?
Blank Space by Taylor Swift - Good or bad?

I may sign my wife up for it, hopefully they have some sort of trial. She likes to use Pandora so it will need to be better than it in order for her to buy in on paying ~10 a month for it.

Indeed. I never bothered to add anyone to that list before, but the new layout and ease of adding people to ignore just makes me want to try something new.

It's terrible that we can't have a decent, intellectual conversation about tech and tech strategies anymore.

I think the addition of the Beats line was a good move, even if I don't like the headphones. I also think the addition of these celebrities is . . . . okay at best, even if I don't listen to them. Apple is obviously better than a small collective of forum readers at making decisions about an international tech company.

And as for Apple going after a younger, more "pop culture" crowd, I'd say it's too late for that notion. It's been that ways since the iPhone 3GS.

??? Please explain. Are you agreeing that calling someone an animal is hate speech, or are you saying that calling someone out for their hate speech IS hate speech?

Just genuinely curious.

I have done this for a long time to avoid some of the more obvious trolls on the site. A while ago there as a thread about Tim Cook's support of gay marriage that made it clear to me that some people here have incredibly intolerant views. To be honest I'm not that interested in the views of people on technology if their view on LBGT themes is still stuck in the Middle Ages and they are not able to discuss this without calling names.

this is the new orwellian tool for racist intolerant people: call those who point it out racist or intolerant of their 'opinion,' and act outraged for being slighted. they think the 1st amendment protects them from people's ability to respond - they don't know it's only about government authority/jail for non-violent speech. they don't understand. anything about life, evidently.

Or just anything you dont agree with is racist. Calling someone an animal is not racist.

Context though. If someone's ethnic group has been referred to as an animal for hundreds of years then it could be construed as racist (which by the way is the wrong term but trying to get people to understand English is nearly impossible)

Calling someone a ghost or a redneck or a hillbilly isn't PREJUDICED (which is the appropriate word) but it doesn't make it any less prejudiced or insulting.
