Yes I am in the same pathway, especially the port functionality makes a big difference for me, in between a 2020 and a 2021 model MBP. I hate using converters etc. This irritated me always.Take the base model 14" 2021 pro.
It is equivalent to your MacBook Pro with ports for functionality. (keep on stating that to the manager). continue to remind them that this issue has delayed your life, work, university.
Try to get it free (at first) then if they try to make you pay a price (400-500 euro) then haggle with them. Try to get the University discount (we have it here in the USA) which knocks off another $150 (dollars). And try to pay 250-350 Euros. Tell them you are a University student that cannot pay the high price difference.
Hopefully things work out for you for the better of this bad situation.
Good luck![]()
If you would have AppleCAre+ then surely you'll be with the new Mac right now.
But hey, if official rep (or to whom you were speaking to) offers you a 14 2021 or even 2020 without any fee (which obviously should be) then cheers? You're lucky one (in good meaning)
Yeah, information. Let's hope that it wasn't so important or sensitive. If not....damn.
There is no need to put it on Erase data or lost mode whatsoever. To be honest those steps must be turned on before this story. Now it's useless because I'm pretty sure that your Mac right now is selling in another "Apple-super-duper-shop" or at disassembly procedure in some basement for spare details.
To all the ones who wait for the result to hear:
Long story short: my MBP is 99% lost. If so, the Apple will give me a new replacement as either 2020 or 2021 MBP, the final decision will be based on our arrangement.
Actually I am supposed to be happy that I will obtain a newer model, but I am so sad about my lost computer. It was really valuable for me. I can not focus on the new device, this feeling is really different and weird.
Yes I am in the same pathway, especially the port functionality makes a big difference for me, in between a 2020 and a 2021 model MBP. I hate using converters etc. This irritated me always.
Hence I will keep my decision on the 14" 2021 one, I hope they help me in this case, we will see tomorrow.
But I am also considering any upgrade on the base-model, if they give me the chance to do by paying the price difference. What could it be and do I need a wisely-upgrade?
Yes, you got it, you know what and how I feel right now.I'm glad this is coming to a "positive" resolution. As I shared my experience with you when my 2013 MBP had to be replaced with a 2016MBP, I was happy to get a new laptop but I was also a bit sad. My 2013 MBP was my first MB - the Haswell processor and I had to wait almost a year for it. Most importantly, it had the ports. So I went from a device with ports to a brand new device with touch bar and had to buy dongles.
Your feelings are validated. I think now that you know you're getting a new device, you're now realizing the loss of the old one. Yes, it's just a laptop but this is normal.
I had the base model early 2015, at that time in 2016 it was 8GB Ram, 128GB SSD, i5 processor, Intel 6100 graphics etc.As the other person stated, go with the 2021 with ports. You're getting a better processor, larger monitor and better screen. My guess is the 2021 14" they are offering is 10-Core CPU/16-Core GPU/16GB Unified Memory/1TB SSD Storage - OPTION A. If that's the case, my advice will be to upgrade to 32GB Memory.
If they are offering the lower model (8-Core CPU 14-Core GPU 16GB Unified Memory 512GB SSD Storage - OPTION B), I will say upgrade the memory for sure to 32GB. If you have the funds, upgrade processor to 10-Core CPU/16-Core GPU/16GB Unified Memory. I would upgrade memory and processor before storage.
How much storage did you have on your original laptop? If you had 512, option B may be your base model.
DO NOT ACCEPT THE 13"Yes, you got it, you know what and how I feel right now.
I would maybe love to keep my first MBP, Early 2015, and this was a legendary device for me. It went perfect during my Bachelor education, did not even stop one day, never made me sad. It always had done everything what I needed, hence I was in love with that device. Even the Genius Bar at the Apple Store has noticed how clean and decent my computer was, when I get there first.
When I now think about it, there is something inside me that I can not get rid of. I feel weird. I can not believe there are some burglars who stole my device.
At the end, you are right that it is just a "computer", just a good, product. I agree as well, makes sense.
Anyway, we will see if what will happen if I tomorrow can get a new one.
If it is resolved with a 2021 model, I am going to be more satisfied as well. Because I do not like the 2020s, they have so many disadvantages and I am kind of a "traditional" mac user. I love the old early 2015 keyboard and having lots of ports internally (HDMI is the best!).
But what led you to think it was a good idea to disable a password on a computer with your information on? Did they ask you to do that? If not, why would you?I disabled the Guest account on my MBP, and did not think of any problem that might exists during the repair. I disabled the password, and also asked the Genius Bar about it. He told me to just leave it as it is, no further action was needed.
Later than I started worrying, and I could activate the guest account as you said, I could not imagine it.
I had the base model early 2015, at that time in 2016 it was 8GB Ram, 128GB SSD, i5 processor, Intel 6100 graphics etc.
Now is the base model for the 14" 2021 MBPs have 16GB Ram and 512GB SSD, I also like to upgrade it to a 32GB (actually I can choose the processor upgrade for 500 Euro, which automatically upgrades the Ram from 16GB to 32GB) but in this case this device will arrive in the end of the January, at earliest.
Hence, I might accept the 14" base model if it is in stock, or maybe I can pay the difference for an upgrade from 14" to 16" device, this is also 500 Euro.
I was schocked by the same thing as well. However they told me that the repair center is in Czech. And also they do not replace the battery only, they replace the whole topcase including the battery, trackpad, keyboard and the aluminum case.
If they offer me the 14" base-model in stock, I would probably get it and go back to my home, tomorrow. The manager should understand the difference between the 2020 13" and the 2021, the 2021 is the newer one which I deserve, and the port differences are huge. I hate the converters and to carry them everywhere, nonsense.DO NOT ACCEPT THE 13"
In your situation it makes perfect sense to only accept the Base model M1 14" MacBook Pro and don't pay anything for it. Period.
Let me explain,
First of all you NEED a computer NOW (if you wait weeks for a customized one it doesn't make any sense for URGENCY)
You need HDMI and SD card reader + ports NOW for work, university, and life (13" pro doesn't have these and you don't like dongles/adapters).
Do not accept anything less. Remind them about these things once they tell you your MacBook will be replaced and let them know you've set your mind on ONLY THE 14" model. (Nicely and kindly talk to them about these things).
Like you said, the manager does understand your situation about the ports. He should understand why you ONLY want the 14" and not the 13".
If you do want upgrades and are willing to pay the extra, make sure its something they have in-stock. Remember you are negotiating on TIME and URGENCY. And pay the difference if you'd like. (also ask for the University discount ?)
Get the laptop and take it home.
Actually I thought they might need some hardware tests to do, so I disabled the password. But it was a big mistake. I hope the thieves do not get into the device, just wipe it off and sell it etc. (This makes me sad to write as well...)But what led you to think it was a good idea to disable a password on a computer with your information on? Did they ask you to do that? If not, why would you?
Anyway...I'm glad you are getting a replacement. I'd definitely try to emphasise the ports—for example the in-built HDMI is really useful on my 2015 MBPro. I miss it on the 2020 MBPro.
It is because for some models, the battery is sticked on the aluminum case. To get it off is risky, Apple avoids this, hence replaces the entire case. It does not make sense to me as well, but it is what is. It was 209 euro charge, and was worth it considering a new outer case, a new trackpad, a new keyboard, and a new battery as the bundle. What??? That's like taking your car in for an oil change and getting an entire engine. Was there anything wrong with the top case, trackpad, keyboard and aluminium case? How much was this job going to cost you? This doesn't sound right.
My early 2015 was a bit slow, but enough for me, so an 2021 14" base-model will be surely okay for me as well. When I think of it, it seems I do not need a 32GB Ram and a 1TB SSD, because it was already enough for me to use 128GB SSD on my early 2015. I was handling with it. 512GB SSD will be surely enough as well.Tough situation you're in and I definitely empathize, especially given you need it for university. Agree with others that going for 14" M1 Pro would make a lot of sense, and should be easily justified from the "needing the ports" angle.
I think best case scenario is they will offer you the US$1999 base model (8-Core CPU / 14-core GPU) with 16GB memory / 512gb SSD for no charge.
Honestly, if you were ok with just getting a new battery on your older 2015 (and so were ok with the performance of that MBP), I think this 2021 14" base model will be more than enough for your needs. If I were you, I wouldn't consider paying the upgrade price for 10-core CPU / 16-core GPU, M1 Pro to M1 Max, or 16gb to 32gb memory. Your use case doesn't sound like you need the additional memory (the rule of thumb on these forums is that "unless you know specifically why you need more than 16gb memory, you almost certainly don't need it"). The 16 to 32gb memory is also really expensive (US$400, I think 500 or 550 Euros), so it's not like it's a cheap upgrade either, and also makes it a BTO (built-to-order) model which will likely mean a significant wait to receive it.
The only upgrade you might consider paying for is larger storage, from 512gb to 1TB SSD, if you think you could use the additional space. It's also a somewhat more reasonable US$200 upgrade.
To all the ones who wait for the result to hear:
NEWS:
I went to the store and talked to the same Genius Bar employee, which I already talked when I first brought my Macbook. I know him, and he recognized me as well.
I told why I came, he was surprised that I have not received my device yet. He listened to me first, then went into somewhere to check, then came with his manager as well. We all three guys had a 30 min talk to understand the issue and possible solutions.
Now: they told me that today they created an investigation and it will take 24 hours, UPS will give them an answer until tomorrow evening. What they know now is that: the MBP was handed over to the UPS, the first delivery truck arrived in the UPS Hub in Germany, it was in the UPS's records, however the next truck (started the road from the UPS Hub Germany to the Czech Republic) has no record. UPS told Apple that second cargo truck is lost. There is no news, nobody knows where it is, and also where the driver is. It disappeared, according to the UPS.
The investigation has started today with both Apple and UPS.
When he first told me this story, I was about to cry. I really liked that MBP, which is lost right now, and possibly in the hands of burglars.
This was the story until now, and the answer exists until tomorrow evening. But they believe that the Macs are really lost (there was not only my mac on that truck, but several ones).
So, as the solution: the manager told me that: if the UPS confirms the goods are lost, okay, then the replacement will take place by Apple. The equivalent device was said by the manager as 13" MBP 2020 with M1 processor. I asked why, because my device was the newest one at the time I purchased, however the 2020 model MBPs are 1 year older ones as we are at the end of 2021 by the way. And also I stated that I was also planning to purchase that M1 processored 2020 model MBPs, however due to the lack of plugs like HDMI and SD Card, I decided to avoid, which was the real situation (This was also the reason why I decided to give a new battery to my early 2015.)
So in this case, I stated this and 2021 model seems better to me for those reasons, which is partially accepted by the manager. However nothing is determined 100% yet.
They will call me until tomorrow evening, if my device is really lost, then we start arranging the best option like either 2020 13" MBP or 2021 14" MBP.
I asked about any price, the manager told me that there is no price if I accept the base-level MBP replacement. I mean I will not be charged for the battery replacement process.
I guess, they told me, if the issue resolves tomorrow, they can directly proceed me a MBP 2020 or 2021, as they have in stock, surely the base-models.
If I want any choice to be upgraded by paying the price difference for parts, then it will take 3-4 weeks, they said.
I am not sure what to do, and what would be the best option in my case.
I can pay maybe 400-500 Euro if any upgrade on any MBP is needed and worth. But I have no idea about the newest Macs (M1 or M1 Pros). If you have any advise for the upgrade, I can consider, otherwise they will give me just a base model of one of those.
I got the idea. Actually the manager was approaching to the situation a bit gingerly, however when I stated that I really like HDMI and SD Card ports, he was understanding it better and checked the possibility and stock status of the 14" 2021, which is seen in stock on the website.I would definitely push for the 14” MBP. It is the most-comparable. I can tell you however, it totally depends on the manager. With one of the retail swaps, the manager rang up the machine at the close-out price in Apple’s system since it was a CTO machine and charged me for the new base-model at the time, which had more RAM and SSD then the old machine I was having replaced. I ended up paying about $300 out of pocket. Last time, when I got my 2018, the manager at that store went over the top and provided every dongle I even thought I might need - for free - because I was going from a 2015 to a 2018. So the manager has a lot of authority to do whatever they want.
If you want anything more than the base-model 14”, I would just pay out of pocket but see if you can use the university discount on top of it. For example, here in the US, the base model is $1999 but you get $150 off or more with the school discount. (Depends on the model, I got the M1 Max 16” which was $300 off). So I would ask that the price of whatever laptop you choose be discounted by the university price *then* have the $1999 taken off as well. I am also not sure how VAT works over there, but you should only be charged on the discounted price after the $1999 and not the MSRP. I think the stores numbers also look good if they sell AppleCare along with the device, so I would mention that you’re considering getting AppleCare so they at least get something out of It.
My finally note is to remember that the store nor the employee nor manager owes you nothing, it’s Apple who does. While the store is acting on their behalf, remember that really the store is doing a courtesy of getting it done today instead of waiting for corporate to do it. When they have to do a retail swap, the reason why it was done is recorded and you will also have to sign documentation releasing Apple for liability on the machine and basically ‘selling it’ back to the company.
here in the USA University/students get a discount on AppleCare+ as well. Doesn't hurt to ask.I got the idea. Actually the manager was approaching to the situation a bit gingerly, however when I stated that I really like HDMI and SD Card ports, he was understanding it better and checked the possibility and stock status of the 14" 2021, which is seen in stock on the website.
By the way thanks for letting me know about the AppleCare+ option, I should definitely consider this if they give me 2021 14". By the way I am not sure about the university discount here in Germany, but I can ask. For now, the best option seems the base model 2021 14" supported with the AppleCare+ (paid by me).
I believe the AppleCare is also now discounted for University students. It’s worth asking. Good luck! I hope you get the 14”, it’s totally worth it in my opinion.I got the idea. remember, you're a university student trying to save money, not spend money.
I hope the same as well, and I am really curious about the result from the UPS and the approach from Apple tomorrow.I believe the AppleCare is also now discounted for University students. It’s worth asking. Good luck! I hope you get the 14”, it’s totally worth it in my opinion.

We will see how it is going to be resolved.
I still can not believe all these things happened, it is still shocking for me. However I am glad that Apple was trying to help me today, hopefully tomorrow will be the same and they can understand why I would like the 14" 2021.
I will check it, thank you
I hope so. It does not seem to be in stock right now, but I will do my best to get it.Great update. Get the 14!!!!
