It is because for some models, the battery is sticked on the aluminum case. To get it off is risky, Apple avoids this, hence replaces the entire case. It does not make sense to me as well, but it is what is. It was 209 euro charge, and was worth it considering a new outer case, a new trackpad, a new keyboard, and a new battery as the bundle.

Ok, €209 isn't too bad for such a job. That is unfortunately the problem with these later models, you can't easily fix just one part. I am lucky in that the 2011 MBP is really easy to open and fix, I also installed a bigger HD and an extra 16 GB RAM. I still have an iPhone SE 1st gen and it's battery now barely lasts half a day. I considered changing it myself, but it is a risky job, much like your laptop battery. Sending an old phone like that in for repair isn't worth it. So that phone is now a permanent 128GB media player/GPS in the car and I have a new 12 mini.

I really hope you get your machine back, these Apple products are collectors items, in my view. My oldest device is an iPod from 2010 with iOS 6, still works, when plugged in. I don't sell or give my Apples away.

I agree with your idea. And I really liked my early 2015 MBP 13”. This was a legendary device for me. However we are almost 99.9% sure that it is gone. I am waiting for a phone call from Apple to confirm this.

Then probably I will be given the 2021 14” MBP, and I am sure I won’t feel the same like I felt with my early 2015. I would want to keep that device in my hands. Was so valuable for me.

I assume you are in the EU because i notice in one of your posts you said you went into the Munich store. EU law is different to laws in many other countries but when it comes to lost items, most of the laws are the same. It does not matter who in the chain lost the macbook, Apple is ultimately responsible and under EU law they are only required to replace like for like or if like for like is not possible and the item is so old that it has no value then Apple is required to offer a 'compensation' amount.

Apple offering a new replacement is entirely up to Apple, they are not legally required to do so. If the lost macbook has specific features that were important to the owner then this must be explained to Apple also. With regards to the personal content on the macbook, you will have to check Apple's terms and conditions of sending items in for repair. In the T&C's it will state that Apple will erase all content on the hard drives and/or SSD's if an when required as part of the repair process. What you need to do is to check the T&C's for any specific wording relating to lost items. Checking the T&C's is very important because you could put a financial value on the personal content on the machine and put a claim into Apple that this forms part of the replacment or reimbursement procedure.

remember, stick to your rights because once you agree with Apples terms on what they are going to do, you cannot go back and ask for more because the agreement is legally binding. This is a PR nightmare for Apple so naturally they will try and help you the best they can BUT do not push your luck in trying to get a lot out of them because there will be a limit they will not exceed and if that was to happen, expect to hear the words 'No'.

The most important features regarding my early 2015 device were input ports (HDMI and SD card especially) and also the ability to use more than one external displays.

These are not possible with the 2020 M1 device, which I already decided not to purchase almost 2 months ago.

Hence in this case 2021 base-model 14” is the better option compared to my lost early 2015 device.

By the way I have just a bit concern about my data, as I already have backups. I hope burglars do not use my data freely. This is just a concern.

Public service announcement...

for everyone following this thread,

The OP is in GERMANY.

They VALUE their privacy & DATA (as a country and a way of life + Digital life)

Germans primarily use CASH instead of Cards (debit/credit) as whole society, to protect their data/privacy.

He is in the EU + Germany, which means he's in an area with 2 different set of rules. (Think Federal Vs. State Laws).

The EU has A LOT of consumer protection laws. (I'm not very knowledgeable about German laws) But he has some footing on "his rights".

If having HDMI and SD card is important to you then you must express that very clearly to Apple but and yes there is a very big BUT, Apple are not legally required to offer a recent model with those requirements because the machine costs way more than what the 2015 is worth. Apple CAN offer you a machine with your requirements BUT they may ask for extra money due to the cost of the new model. This is where your negotions skills come into play because if you ask Apple that HDMI and SD card is important to you hence why you went for that model of 2015 machine and you need it in the replacement machine and Apple reply back that they have no such machine avilable under the replacement T&C's, you can ask about which models do have them and request that you have one of them and that with the cost of replacing your 2015 machine you will top it up with extra cash for the newest machine that does have what you want.

Yes Apple lost your macbook but never ever demand you want something because Apple could just dig their heels in and only give the you the minimum as required by law. This will not benifit you so use your judgement when negotiating, stick to your ground, do not let Apple persuade you to have something you do not really want. The worst that can happen is that Apple to offer you financial compensation that covers the loss of your macbook. Ideally you want to walk away with a replacement macbook that has HDMI and SD.

As for your data, you should have gone to your Apple account and activated 'Find My...' by now as this would prevent burgulars from gaining access to your data.

It seems you are on the Apple’s side but actually what you miss here that this is related to the Apple’s quality and the trust which they obtain from users. Now I have almost no trust to them. Would I ever think that my device was going to be lost? With Apple? Seriously? (I am not mentioning my data by the way, it is my responsibility)

So after they cause this loss, they just still try to give me a lower model at the end of 2021. It does not make sense to me.
Let us see all the parameters one more time:

1) I must use two external displays at work. This is not supplied to me with a 2020 M1 device. Bingo! And my early 2015 was able to provide this.

2) I need both HDMI and SD card slots, not supplied with a 2020 M1. Bingo 2! And I hate carrying dongles, which I never had with my early 2015, that also provided me all these slots.

3) Magsafe charging. Since typec/thunderbolt chargins seems fragile to me, I keep magsafe in my pocket. I am a traditional user. It was excellent on my early 2015.

So in this case, if they insist giving me a 2020 M1, which is a device that I already decided not to purchase, that device is going to be fast enough but I will be gone a few years back to worse, in terms of usability and productivity. Why would I accept this?

My lost early 2015 was way better than a 2020 M1, hence I decided to keep using that device just with a new battery.

@laptech @GoztepeEge has already been advised to approach this situation very CALM and UNDERSTANDING. While EXPLAINING why he would LIKE the 14" and CANNOT USE the 13". (NOT DEMANDING)

He will also continue to explain that is exactly why he chose to stick with his 2015 model, because of those features of ports/connections.

He will not accept the base 13" model, He will ASK IF he can get the 14" base model instead (FREE OF CHARGE)

IF he does not get the base 14" FREE OF CHARGE, he will ask for a University discount (if available) on the price suggested he pay.

@GoztepeEge has never said he was entitled to or he will "demand" a replacement. In all fairness, he really wanted to keep his machine and have the battery replaced. But this unfortunate situation happened and he wants to make the best out of it.

Which is getting the 14" base model for free (of charge) as a replacement for his lost device.

The 13" is better than what he had. Way better. He doesn't even deserve that since his computer is nearly 7 years old.

I am not on Apple's side, I am just telling you how it is. If you go to Apple 'demanding' things, you will lose, trust me on this. Apple will do their up most best to help you but if you start to become an awkward customer, they will resort to defending themselves and give you very little in return. Remember, what the law entitles them to give you is way way less than what they will offer you.

No, your lost early 2015 is way worse than the 2020 M1. Apple should just give you a used 2015 then.

He wasn't concerned about PERFORMANCE "better" that why he wanted to keep his 2015 and get the battery replaced.

HE WAS CONCERNED ABOUT FUNCTIONALITY (connections)

So yes the 14" is the one he should be "trying" to get as a replacement.

Thank you for understanding my thoughts and feelings in this case. You are exactly right. I do not feel happy that I will ever get a new device, because I was already in love my early 2015 mbp, it was legendary.

I wish I can get it back in any way, however it seems it is really lost. Even today there is no news about the repair or UPS.

In this case, if the replacement is the only option, the Apple employee and the manager should pay attention to why I gave up purchasing that 2020 M1 MBP, because it does not suit to my type of use. It is not beneficial for me. It is a fast device, okay, but does not suit to my work for the reasons I explained above.

I am not trying to get a benefit from this situation, this is something I have never expected and wish to get rid of. However I need to be understood why I choose 2021 14”.

Where is Apple going to find a used 2015 that is like-for-like the same as the lost device? That is what they must do. If the replacement has one additional scratch that the original didn’t it’s not like-for-like.

I honestly think they're jealous of this situation.

that OP might get a new base model 14" as a replacement for his 2015 13".

BUT THAT WAS NOT HIS INTENTION.

HE WANTED TO KEEP HIS 2015 MODEL....
Not only that it sounds like OP had an emotional attachment to the device which I totally get.

There is what Apple is legally required to do, and there is what Apple should do. I find it interesting people on here talk about how great Apple support is and how they always take care of the customer. If that is the case, this should be a no brainer to swap the machine for a functionally equivalent model, ie the 2021 base model.

This is why I wanted to proceed with a battery replacement. It should make sense to everyone else.

I could purchase a 2020 M1, but due to the decreased functionality, I decided to continue with my legendary early 2015. Please do not take it only from one perspective, as “speed”.
Functionality is really important for me.
At work I always work with 2 additional displays and all the day I use sd cards to update/flash the sds of our products. 2020 M1 device would decrease my productivity and it stucks me to additional dongles. I do not want...

No. Apple is within their rights to give him what the 2015 is worth, which isn't much. People should stop trying to get things they're not entitled to.

Ever heard of the word 'empathy'? Maye you should apply it.
Your passive aggressiveness is not much help here. After all it is not the OPs fault that Apple lost his computer. The OP is until now very reasonable and friendly about the whole situation, but somehow you persist to blame the OP in this thread. The OP is the victim here, no need to kick someone who is already lying down.

Are they though? I mean the laptop was sent in for repair and it’s gone. So… OP is going to get a check and hope it covers the replacement?

If you feel that way, Apple should just give you any old 2015-2019 laptop and be done with it. Then you'll have your functionality.

He is not a victim. He's getting a brand new laptop to replace a laptop worth less than $400.
