In Canada, the 1TB costs around $480. That's not a bad price, considering it's Apple ( take that as either positive or negative).

Samsung 970 EVO M.2 NVMe 1TB Internal SSD as reference ( not considering any performance differences ):

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you have to take into consideration the price of the drive being removed. So if for example it comes with a 256 GB SSD that cost 100. You're no longer getting that 256 GB SSD which was included in the MacBook price. So the cost of the upgrade is 580.

Cool. Don't lower the price on the sizes people actually care about! Who the F needs more than 1TB of SSD storage? Let alone, more than 256? Everything can be saved online.
People who do work? Creative types with a lot of media?

Not everyone uses their MacBook Pro exclusively as a social networking and media consumption machine.

Agreed. I have a 2TB SSD in my MacBook Pro - I have 100s of GB of scanned family photos and my own digital photos as well as home videos that I like to be able to access on the fly - I’m often using them for projects and restoring/repairing the old photos. As much as I love having my entire iCloud Photo Library on my iPhone, it’s annoying having to wait for photos and videos to download, its great being able to launch photos and browse any photo I want.

Good point! Sadly :-(

With RAM, and storage , it used to be cheaper to buy the model without upgrades and uograde yourself. That was, of course, when Apple made this possible before everything was soldered.

Update: clarify- I’m thinking of MacBook pros

$600 for 1TB PCI-e SSD!!!! And people don't think twice about paying for it! A high performance 1TB NVMe SSD is about $150 right now...$200 if you don't make any effort getting a good price. There just isn't any real excuse for charging 4x the retail price. The SSD market has been in a downhill pricing slide since late last year.

Can't speak on the pricing of 4tb as there aren't currently a real set of available 4tb SSD options on the market yet. So in this case, you're likely paying for a "bleeding edge" setup. So Meh? up to you if the value is there.

However, for Retail pricing of NVME M.2 PCI-Ex4 drives capable of 3Gbps+
2TB Samsung 970: 523.62
1TB Samsung 970: 289.98
500 GB Samsung 970: 164.99
250GB TB Samsung 970: 101.99

Apple's hefty margins on storage upgrades are still here. They're still charging roughly 2x retail price. your mileage on if there's value here will be up to the purchaser. But these upgrades are still quite expensive compared to the market.

Oh, so apple now "only" charges a plus of $1,200 for an upgrade to an 2TB SSD.
An Samsung 970 EVO with the same specs costs $497 on amazon. And remember the Apple price is only an upgrade, so you have to add the price of an 256 GB SSD.

They should be lowering prices of the laptop itself. The base 15" model used to be around $1800 before they introduced the retina. Then when the classic model got phased out, and they kept the prices of retina at over $2k. Now it's up to $2.4k, which is ridiculous.

I'm using about 900 GB in my 2011 MacBook Pro, mostly digital photos, so upgrade prices to a current model are absolutely terrifying for me.

Best $1200 in tech I ever spent was in 2012 on my MacBook Pro. Over the years it went from a 4GB Ram/500GB HDD, to a 16GB RAM 2TB SSD. Given Ivy Bridge works well for my needs, I’ve saved a huge amount of money.

They are scary. I don’t think I’ll ever have a MacBook as my primary machine ever again. I’m using 1.5TB of my 2TB SSD on my 2012 MacBook Pro. I’ll probably have to go iMac with fusion or a Mac Mini/iMac with external storage.

What was it before? Like $7,300+ for max specs?

It was overpriced, now it is a little bit less overpriced.

Let's not fool ourselves, the Apple is not doing this out of generosity or because they had a change of heart and became less greedy, they are doing this because they are forced to, RAM and SSD prices are falling everywhere.

Taking that into account, these prices are still insanely high.

Due to this pricing change now, I'm assuming the MacBook Pros aren't going to be updated too?

Sure, that's great if the internet is available anywhere you go, at suitable speeds.

Im starting to think we are about to get a MBP.. this week.

Apple knows intel is rather flaky with their processor releases and they need a fix. I think we could see just a redesign coming very very very soon with no new specs. Just a design that can handle the thermals and has a new display.

We are not getting an update to the MacBook Pro this week. Intel has not released, or even announced 9th Gen 28w and 45w TDP H-Series CPUs (Comet Lake). The very earliest that they are likely to be announced and launched is in April. Even if they are announced then, it will be 60-90 days after that before OEM partners begin receiving actual CPUs for integration into the product lines. This also assumes that Intel can meet the actual demand of more 14nm products, which it has said would still be an issue for the next two fiscal quarters.

If there was going to be an update, why change prices on the existing MBPs?
