Of course the price rises have contributed to iPhones sales declining but I'd also argue we have reached Peak Smartphone. What more can we add to phones? I'd argue nothing much really. My phone does everything I need it to do. If only the Victorian State Government would allow me to put my Myki card on my iPhone.

When I held the original iPhone at a party in 2007, I went out and bought one the next day. It changed the landscape of cell phones. That was 2007. Now, all flagship phones are pretty much the same across all manufacturers. The iPhone was a few generations ahead of everything else back then. But what's next?
I don’t know, but the iPhone is the single best consumer product of all time based on revenue generated. I think subjectively, you can say it changed peoples’ lives more than anything has since maybe the car?

Usually iPhone model gets old after 3 quarters of sales. In the case of XR, XS and XS Max, it got old after 3 weeks.

I don’t agree the game is “over” but they might have reached a tipping point on pricing and somewhat miscalculated peoples’ ability and desire to pay this much for a smartphone. It worked with the X, but that might have been a one time thing and there weren’t enough people left to buy another round of $1000 phones.

I’m not sure releasing a cheaper phone would have gotten the, to $90B+ in sales in 90 days either. The numbers are just insane and that’s the problem. We saw today in a report that the China slowdown is real.

Maybe I said that wrong just meant they need to change tactics. The game isn't over but last years rules don't apply. Yes the slow down is real the markets were off today pre-trading hours because of China announcements. Every single stock I have and they are all blue chips are down after market.

You can tell Apple made miscalculations based upon their stock buybacks that back fired on them. On the bright side maybe the bad news is now over. i was only swing trading them to average my cost down or feed some margins. i noticed that they were not getting rewarded for anything recently. Maybe all of the ugliness is baked in to the price now but if the trade war heats up all bets are off.

Personally i will buy some AAPL tomorrow if the pre-market has it down a good percent before the bell. It certainly has been quite an education to begin trading last September. I almost live for the volatility now.

I would like to call this a 'market crash' equivalent... As least to Apple it would seem that way.

Widespread internet availability but i realize that is apples and oranges.

I would agree the "smart phone" changed people's lives more than most products ever manufactured. Apple played a huge role in that and in fact lead the way for everyone else to catch up. But they caught up. I don't see smart phones going away any time soon, but at $1k and up, I'd have to with the dumbest smart phone I could find around $500-$600, and keep that sucker until the power button broke off.

Anyone here who has relatives or acquaintances in China? I’m curious if it’s true that their citizens prefer homegrown brands to foreign ones, when those products are equally capable?

Also, generally speaking, investment gurus said early on that an American brand’s ability to establish itself in China was crucial for its future success. Is that still the belief?

Aside from wanting a 3D phone, I did drop nearly $5k on a new maxed-out Mini, so I've done my part. My Galaxy S6 from a few years ago still works fine (and does Gear VR). Very good phone.

Although I can’t imagine living without my iPad, I’m thinking my iPhone 8 Plus may be my last iPhone for a while.

I’ve just not been very impressed in the latest versions. They no longer feel special especially at the prices.

I’m having the same feelings about my iMac and MacBook. There is nothing that makes them stand out against a windows machine anymore.

Thunderbolt is no longer proprietary, and USB-C is an industry standard.
Dude, Thunderbolt 3 remains all but de-facto Intel property, regardless of iNTEL's attempt to relax its hold promoting "industry-standard" status. And the reason is iNTEL's Titan-Ridge controller.

iNTEL's Titan-Ridge controller is the standard I/O controller used on all motherboards and in all-in-one docks. Alternate Thunderbolt controller renders (e.g. using Texas Instruments) have proven to not be viable.

GOTO: https://www.anandtech.com/show/12228/intel-titan-ridge-thunderbolt-3

"Intel has introduced a new family of Thunderbolt 3 controllers that bring support of the DisplayPort 1.4 standard to TB3 ports. The new Titan Ridge family of controllers pick up where Intel's previous Alpine Ridge controllers left off by incorporating new DisplayPort functionality, and for the first time, a USB-C fallback mode when used as a sink/peripheral device. This mid-generation update for Thunderbolt 3 will allow the standard and devices using the new Titan Ridge controllers to catch up with current display standards, and work better with the next generation of UHD displays."

A field day, the haters shall have today.

The revenue decline was driven by China, while developed countries are actually expected to post higher revenue.

Meanwhile, many products remain supply constrained. Meaning that demand outstrips supply.

This shows that pricing isn’t really a key factor. By and large, consumers are still willing to buy Apple products at Apple prices.

Do people even read articles before commenting anymore?

Stop. You're making sense and people don't like that.

I especially like the part where Apple's gross profit margins have dropped to 38%, but people are still whining about the price hikes as being greedy. Think about it...

They really don't need to get caught playing that game again..

“If you keep your eye on the profit, you’re going to skimp on the product. But if you focus on making really great products, then the profits will follow.”

― Steve Jobs

Hey Tim, I have something for you to read. Steve understood the path to profit is one paved with great products. You on the other hand, are just price gouging the cost of the pavers, hoping to keep profits high.

My next phone may very well be Android. That all depends on what they release at the end of 2019. It sucks that I'm stuck on High Sierra on my MacBook Pro because of their lack of NVIDIA support in Mojave for eGPUs. They're trying very hard to push me away. :/ Maybe AMD will surprise me with some competitive GPUs this year. There's rumors of a 1080 competitor being released this year at a much cheaper cost.

I don't miss my iPhone one bit. Been on an el-cheapo Android (ZTE Axon 7) and now a Galaxy S9+ and love them. They do more and, IMHO are more intuitive than iPhones (3G, 4, 6+ for me).

AMD's GPUs are competitive in the low to mid end and are getting there in the high end. nVidia gets 0 love from me like Intel as their business practices are pretty scummy.

I had upgraded every year from the iPhone 3G to iPhone 6. In 2019 I still have my iPhone 6. Why?

When rumors of the iPhone X came out I intended to upgrade, until I saw the price.
In 2018 when rumors were that the iPhone Xs would come in at a cheaper price, I intended to upgrade, until I saw the final price.

I really can't justify spending $1879 on what is basically just a better camera for my phone.

LOL - pardon the LOL. $5k on a mini? WOWz. If that's a joke it's not funny. If that's the truth, it's not funny.

EDIT: I just can't live in a world where a $5k mini co-exists.

Funny how all the armchair Wall Street experts who post on Macrumors dismissed all the warnings from a month ago.
If I’m one to fall into your category, it was largely because every year it’s the same rumors from suppliers about production cuts, the media circus that ensues, and the results that end up proving the opposite. I’d rather not do the dance and just wait for the results. Instead, the naysayer pundits, market manipulators, and tech bloggers that emerge every single year may actually finally be right this time and feel vindicated despite being wrong the last many years they promised the same thing.

I would still venture to say it’s not price that has held back sales, it’s market saturation. Apple has raised the price in hopes of sustaining itself on fewer sales at higher margins. It worked for awhile, but maybe people are holding our even longer. I honestly don’t think the latest phone means that much to most people—they just wait until they get their carrier upgrade or their current phone stops working.
