That will mean no high end iPhones with cutting edge technology. Why would anyone want that?

For those who can't afford the current flagship XS, you can walk into an Apple Store today and buy a brand new unlocked iPhone 7 for $449 which will receive new operating systems and security updates for almost three more years. Or they can buy a new battery for their old iPhone.

That is nonsense. You do understand that iPhones are made in China? In the same country and in part, in the same factories as some of the Android phones. Many Android phones have higher hardware specs than iPhone. What they don't have is the huge profit margin that Apple is trying to pull.

Depends on your point of view.

The flagship iPhone the Xs and Xs Max and lasts years iPhone X are more expensive than an iPhone has ever been, this is a fact, to the consumer they now have to pay more if they want the best. Ultimately the only thing that matters is how Apples customer perceives these price increases.

Apple has aggressively chased a higher ASP as an attempt to appease Wall Street at at time when iPhone sales were flat this comes at a cost to the customer.

Re the higher prices vs higher unit sales argument Apple has chosen the higher pricing at the expense of market share, iOS market share has dwindled in the US, Japan and the four biggest markets in Europe in recent years. Chasing profits over market share was something Jobs always cautioned against.

I think the perception that Apple has changed under Tim Cook comes from a feeling that they are keener to please Wall Street than their own customer these days. Hard to imagine this happing under Jobs really.
Lol. Wall street would beg to differ. You only offered up one example which is price, but wall street wants what cutomers want which is profits. Why would shareholders not want to sell more product? The price example doesnt make sense

This is to be expected. In Turkey iPhone 8 Plus was 5500 Turkish Liras last year. This year XS was starting at 10500 and XS Max was starting at 13000 Turkish Liras. The Lira lost quite a lot of value this year and I'm sure we are not alone in this. I upgraded my iPhone every year for the last 4 years, but not this year. It's just too expensive.

Not

Not really, yeah iPhone is getting ridiculously expensive, but many Apple users already investing so deep into the ecosystem.

They also own iPad, Mac, Homepod,  Music subscription and may be countless iTunes purchases that may be unplayable by switching phone

I’d say grab 2017 iPhone like 8 Plus for much cheaper instead of switching.

Its statistical fact that more and more iPhone users are switching to Android. Its people like us who read MacRumors etc. that are "die hard" for iOS and Apple ecosystem. In reality, MacRumors readers are not much of market segment...

Tim worries about China. Meanwhile, by not marketing a cheap entry-level iPhone Apple is writing off the entire subcontinent of India. Shrewd move!

The problem is that even the cheapest iPhone is going to be out of the budget for the majority of people in India.

I feel Apple is better off trying to market them a cellular Apple Watch than a budget iPhone.

The battery replacement thing has bitten them in the ass too. People are discovering that their old phone with a new battery flies along and coupled with the crazy costs of phones these days many are just continuing with their old phone.

I am confused. Is this supposed to be a good or bad thing? Are you saying that Apple should have not offered the battery replacement programme in order to compel even more users to upgrade?

So it’s not a good thing that your iPhone 6+ with a new battery and running iOS 12 continues to work well enough for users to not feel like they need to upgrade ever so often?

Seems Apple just can’t win. They get blamed for slowing down devices to avoid accidental shutdowns, and they get blamed for prolonging the longevity of your devices.

Does anyone like Apple on MR? Literally every thread on here is full of Apple bashing which is surprising considering it's an Apple-centric website. It's like 90% of the user base are Android/Windows users, which begs the question why are you even on this website?

Simple
Lower prices
$1500 iPhones
$1800 IPads
Not rocket science

Tim wanted to test what the market could bear.
Now the bear is bitting back.

Tim fell into his own Reality Distortion Field.

UPDATE:
55 billion dollars wiped out in 1 afternoon due to hubris.

It is simply mistake in pricing

Airpods cost what HomePod should cost.
Apple Watch costs what iPhone should cost
iPhone XR max costs what MacBook Pro should cost

iPhones and iPads costs much more than most of the market’s laptops. Those are prices as Pro Laptops

Well, one of my reasons for no upgrade is not mentioned. I simply am happy with my iPhone 8 Plus with Touch ID and none of these phones have Touch ID or anything that important for me to upgrade without it. I'm sure I'm not alone in this.

Let's just say I need a little less of Craig Federighi's "HO HO HO" in my life while driving in the car. :D

Why would you assume the "Apple bashing" isn't been done by Apple fans who are growing tired of the Company's decisions?

The prices of the new phones are ludicrous. I’m not surprised sales are down!

I’ve upgraded my iPhone consistently every two years, but couldn’t justify the expense this time around despite being in a financially much more confortable place.

So keeping my 7 a year longer than usual (at least) to see what Apple has to offer in 2019.

Of course, revenue is down:
1. people are changing the battery rather than their phone
2. a decent phone can be purchased dirt cheap in China (xiaomi redmi for £100)

I have a feeling the battery/slowdown issue affected Apple more than they thought, hence the reason they slowed the phones down, in the hope of selling a replacement.

If we had current US prices in the EU, all Apple products would have sold like hotcaces.
I don’t even understand why the Americans are complaining about $999 phones. We have to play freaking $1340 for the 64GB model... don’t get me even started about iPads and MacBooks!

Just because the amount of Apple bashing and negativity, it's hard to believe anyone here actually uses Apple products.

As someone with iPhones, iMacs, iPads, MacBook Pros, Apple Watches, Apple TVs, etc, I’m as junkie. But when you go into an Apple store in the last 12 months, it’s fun, but everything is the same. I leave the store with nothing new and without a thought of what I’m buying next, because nothing is new. The products are just all generally the same. The AirPods were different in 2016, everything else is an update. They need something new, something nobody else has, where price has no comparison. Tim Cook rode the coat tails of Steve long enough. Time to come up with something new, unique and different. I’m glad I took the tax loss Monday with Apple stock.

As much as I hate Apple's approach to pricing in the last 12 months, you need to compare like with like

US iPhone is $999 plus tax

UK (as an example) is £999 but that includes VAT at 20%

The price difference between the two net of sales tax at the current exchange rate is £37, and in the UK you benefit from much stronger consumer protection.

It is simply mistake in pricing
Price is of course an issue but monthly payments would have kept it palatable IF the new iphones retained the desirability factor. Unfortunately, they have nothing 'new' (other than specs).
There is no turn-around until the next product (AR glasses) comes along!

A field day, the haters shall have today.

The revenue decline was driven by China, while developed countries are actually expected to post higher revenue.

Meanwhile, many products remain supply constrained. Meaning that demand outstrips supply.

This shows that pricing isn’t really a key factor. By and large, consumers are still willing to buy Apple products at Apple prices.

Do people even read articles before commenting anymore?

“in some developed markets, iPhone upgrades also were not as strong as we thought they would be”

Maybe you should read the articles too.

Maybe Apple should join forces with Nokia? They could actually get some new ideas, not just "repeat with a higher price"... ;)

...The fact is that Apple is back to the ridiculous premium brand it was before Jobs saved the company in the beginning of the 2000s. Too much price, not enough content.

Let's see:

2007 - iPhone is $399 (after initial flub)
2019 - that would be $487 with inflation - where is my $499 flagship phone? (which honestly should still be $399 as tech gets cheaper, certainly storage is)

Your flagship-phone comes from Xiaomi, it is called Pocophone F1.
