Perhaps Apple should put all their money into AI, feed everything Steve Jobs ever said of did into the AI and create a new Steve robot that can turn the company around again like last time.
iSteve ?

If they lower the price. I would definitely buy a new iPhone. I still hold on on my iPhone 6. It is not that I don't have money for a new iPhone.... In contrast, the price is not justifiable. And I would feel stupid to pay that amount of money for a new iphone.

I think that they did a decent job with pricing at the time prices were most likely set. I also think they guided accurately considering the global economy at the time they guided, but the global economy has slowed down more quickly than I think most expected, especially over the past few weeks.

I distinctly recall articles from last month essentially laughing off the idea of a recession beginning by the end of 2019, and now there's some walking back going on. This economy's not pretty for growth for any company.

I hope you work for Apple.

Does anyone like Apple on MR? Literally every thread on here is full of Apple bashing which is surprising considering it's an Apple-centric website. It's like 90% of the user base are Android/Windows users, which begs the question why are you even on this website?

Because even many of the hardcore Apple users are not happy with the direction that Apple has taken? Should we be happy that Apple has failed to deliver products that sell? Should we applaud them for diminishing market share? One must be hardcore Android fanboy to be happy with Apple right now.

You can never replace the passion and vision of a founding member of a company.

Yes Steve wanted to make money on his products but he also truly believed in his vision of making the best product possible for the consumer and it wasn’t 100% about the money like Apple is today.

Apple today can harp on about how it continues to follow Steve’s vision and values but they don’t truly embrace them like he did.

As much as I love Apple they need to be knocked down a peg or two to regain some focus.

Nailed it . When you are tying to explain to the average person how many cups of coffee they have to skip on to get a new iPhone, you have failed and lost track of the vision.

The problem is that the average consumer is starting to view Apple as a high street brand with thier new pricing. And no longer sees the value for money . Apple no longer reporting unit sales is proof less and less customers buying, and they pulled the dumbest move that all greedy companies would , increase the price and rearrange the chairs on the titanic that is dropping unit sales .

I agree with lowering prices, but it’s harder than you think. Apples in a tough spot here. They’ve created an entire market around iPhones, with increasing value each year. This way, programs like the yearly upgrade program work, because a 1-year used iPhone will sell for higher than half its original retail price. If they lower prices on the next release, all of a sudden my 1 year old xs max isn’t worth as much and I can’t trade it in, so I’m stuck with it.

It’s a bullet they’re going to have to bite in my opinion. Shareholders will lose value and executives will be fired (correctly). Then bring in a technologist with vision to come up with the next big thing. Let’s be honest, Tim Cook’s Apple is not going to come up with that.

Would you use a celluar Apple Watch over a smartphone ? Even the cheapest android is a better user experience

My point being is that Apple trying to make a budget iPhone that can compete with dirt-cheap android smartphones is a fool’s errand. In the process of trying to cut costs, you will invariably cripple it to the point where getting one defeats the whole purpose of getting an iPhone in the first place - which is paying a premium for a sufficiently differentiated user experience made possible by Apple’s control over hardware and software.

Which is why Apple markets to the high end segment, because that’s where you appeal to the discerning customer who is willing to pay a premium for what he can’t get elsewhere.

And the catch is that you can’t have the best of both worlds. But since Apple has consistently been raking in the lion’s share of profits, I feel that’s a trade off Apple has been more than happy to make (record-breaking quarters over profitless market share).

If you ask me, india is a lost cause when it comes to selling iPhones.

A cellular Apple Watch is no replacement for a smartphone, but at least there are sufficient points of differentiation that you can use to market it, and it will be easier to market it at $200-300 (assuming the Apple Watch does become independent of the iPhone one day) instead of trying to bring the iPhone down to that price range.

It may require a broader change in strategy, particularly in China. Huawei is starting to really compete on the high end there.

I think the danger is somewhere else: Xiaomi -- these guys sell very powerful phones at very low prices. The Mi A2 running Android One (which is a stock Google Android with guaranteed updates for 2 years) is sold for 200 bucks in the 5.99" 403ppi display/20 MP rear camera/12 MP "selfie" camera/Snap Dragon 660 CPU/4 GB RAM/64 GB storage configuration. The Mi A2 is a very fast and very nice phone with an excellent build quality and I have not yet found a feature that I miss (I don't care for NFC and similar gimmicks) - especially not in a phone at this price point.

The iPhone is around six times as expensive as the Mi A2. I'm pretty sure I am not the only one who does not believe that it provides six times the value.

And the worst is that when i speak to everybody around me, everybody is genuinely upset at apple, like "yeah they are really robbing us", and you hear stories where they need to buy an adaptater for this, the lightning jack adaptator not included, and for thoses who remember that the boxes of old iPod and first iPhone was full of accessories etc.. now you barely have a 50cm cable it's just a joke.

They are still at the top because they are the best, but litteraly the SECOND as somebody will make a similar product (and it's starting to happen) everybody will have a huge satisfaction feeling to give back what apple did to them and will buy an android phone and think "well take that ***king apple"... apple doesn't realise it but it is really really worrying... even on this website, hardcore fan are upset

Nice try. Your assertion I'm blaming the situation on trade tariffs is simply a lie. I am saying that when trade tariffs kick in starting March things will get a lot worse. Pay attention to the word starting.

You may want to educate yourself and understand how consumer spending in China has massively declined starting in October of last year and progressively getting worse, which has greatly and adversely impacted iPhone sales in China. It takes just a bit of reading, assuming you really want to understand the underlying forces at play.

If only it was that easy, I’d be a billionaire with a little reading ;)

The reality is , you just have to read MR since October last year to realise that less and less are upgrading , and many have confessed they were annual upgraders . It’s not socket science when the top spec unit since 2016 has gone up over 50% globally

Apple puts on a friendly 'caring, sharing' face, but behind the mask it's all about capitalist greed, pure and simple.

They're totally driven by the shareholders, and it's ALL about profit.

These declines come as no real surprise. The products are way overpriced. If Apples loses the 'cool' factor, then things really could decline sharply.

I still have an iPhone 6. I can afford a new iPhone. I chose not to buy one because the prices are offensively high.

Same situation here with my SE - I want a new phone, the current line-up doesn't appeal much as I don't like big phones, I may have gone for an X at a push but I don't fancy spending £1000 on something I don't really want. Simple as that.

I was in the same situation, and kind of went for it on an impulse, and god the Xs is a wonder, the screen, the photo you really have the "wow effect", but i agree i didn't really want this, but i can afford it without eating potatoes so i'm enjoying as much as i can right now (may not be the same in a few years..)

This kind of threads should be splitted:
right side of the screen: basic Apple users (newbies, old school, apologists or disappointed)
left side those with an AAPL position.
Out of the screen: those who entered AAPL too late and now are in panic mode. They're poisoning the discussions

The downside to this is it will only make Apple double down on trying to make their products harder to repair and last.

More glue, solder and higher prices to gain from every sale.

I have a iPhone 6s running with a battery case. Its a working phone. I want a XS Max and work for a phone company. Waiting for staff options and even then. I’ll consider the price.

Well, one of my reasons for no upgrade is not mentioned. I simply am happy with my iPhone 8 Plus with Touch ID and none of these phones have Touch ID or anything that important for me to upgrade without it. I'm sure I'm not alone in this.

Let's just say I need a little less of Craig Federighi's "HO HO HO" in my life while driving in the car. :D
While driving in the car, you shouldn't be looking at your phone anyway. Just sayin"...

I personally don't care about marketshare or what Apple is or isn't delivering or whats in their pipeline of products. What I do see is a company purposely tweaking the design of their products where you have no choice but to buy a new replacement if the damn thing breaks or you need to pony up for an extended warranty which I never do because I take care of my stuff.

I still own a 2012 Mac Mini and I was really, really excited about the 2018 Mini. But then word quickly spread about what Apple did to the new Mac Mini. Such as soldering the SSD to the motherboard and pairing it with a T2 security chip. Have a look at the Mac Mini forum and you'll see all of the complaints and small problems the T2 chip brings. The worst part is if the SSD storage fails or the controller in the T2 chip fails, that will require a new motherboard which is expensive when it requires service. You might as well buy a new one. And SSD's have a certain shelf life. And the worst part is they could have redesigned the Mini to incorporate a user replaceable SSD blade but chose to solder the SSD to the mobo.

Meanwhile if my HDD fails in my 2012 Mini, I can install a new one or easily upgrade the RAM. The current iMac is another computer that is almost impossible for a do-it-yourselfer to repair or upgrade.

These are the kinds of things the Mac faithful are beginning to see more and more in the design of Apple products. I was tempted to buy a new Mac Mini but have decided against it and when my Mini is no longer supported i'll just convert it to a Linux or Windows 10 box.
