Come on Apple. We all know many people who are shocked by the new pricing. You've effectively increased the cost of your flagship phone from 2016, an iPhone 7 Plus, by $500 to the $1449 XS Max. Even forgetting about the increased storage, it's a large jump in cost. That combined with iOS 12 running smoothly on older devices no doubt affects the sales.
It makes more sense to compare the pricing of the base models. That said, $1099 for the XS Max is a step up from the pricing of the 6Plus and 7Plus.

They need to do something. Obviously the XS isn’t selling as well as expected, particularly in China. Selling old phones doesn’t seem to be working, either, since Huawei and other local companies are competing for the premium customers.
They're not going to sell a revised version of a phone that not many people bought when it was new. They sold more than they expected, but more than not much is just some, and some is not enough for the big R&D spend for this otherworldly iPhone X-style design people seem to be hoping for.

I'd say a smarter expectation than the aforementioned "iPhone SE 2" is that with time they'll decide to keep a biannually updated 4.7" iPhone with last year's innards starting in the $449-549 range. An iPhone SE, somewhat, in the iPhone 7's design and with a higher price tag, most likely.

Steve Jobs predicted this:

they cared about making a lot of money… they got very greedy and instead of following the original trajectory of the original vision which was to make this thing an appliance and get this out there to as many people as possible, they went for profits, and they made outlandish profits for about 4 years, one of the most profitable companies in America for 4 years, and what that cost them was their future, because what they should have been doing was making rational profits…”

There you go...from the horse's mouth.

Basically...

Especially now that Samsung, Huawei and OnePlus are offering cheaper but equally good if not better alternatives.

Apple is still dominating the market by a huge margin.
They still make practically ALL the profits in the smartphone industry.
I'm very bullish on AAPL.

The thing is you can’t expect to sell this many iPhone units at this price. The iPhone is functionally mature. There is little incentive to upgrade every year when there aren’t these huge technological leaps happening any more. The main reason to upgrade is if your phone breaks or gets too slow. I know people who refuse to upgrade because of price. It’s just too much when their iPhone 6 or 6s still works and does what they need it to do. People like my wife who have the money to upgrade their iPhone SE but don’t because her upgrade option is 6.1”. So she got a new battery put in it instead and is still happy. The other issue is paradox of choice. I know people who are so confused by all the different model options at the store that they ultimately said they chose nothing. Apple used to master paradox of choice and now it is becoming their downfall.

Apple is in an impossible position. They are in the middle of a trade war and a patent battle. They have to raise prices ahead of tariffs. They are running up against the law of large numbers when it comes to increasing revenues. They have their back against the wall when it comes to current technical limits with few meaningful features left to implement. They have a lot of new ideas relating to AR, health, cars and more that are currently baking in their labs but need more time in the oven. Fortunately they have a lot of cash, but everyone should expect their share price to fall, perhaps even more than the market which is currently in decline. What I fear most is that they will cut their smaller units like Mac to focus on further innovation for their cash cow, the iPhone.

Agree - Cook has got it spectacularly wrong! The love of Apple is dwindling. He needs to learn from Steve Jobs and make sure Apple are innovators. His obsession with a second rate mac product range for premium pricing will be his undoing!

It is beginning to seem like Apple has lost it's warm fuzzy feeling. Looks like something like Tesla is then now storybook/fanboy company. i think over all Apple is fine and I certainly will be looking tomorrow for it to go lower and buy.

I don't see Apple continuing to have a cult like following for much longer. If Arn sells MacRumors that would be a sign. As a company over all Apple is less enjoyable to follow lately. They may do well on making G rated movies and services but for innovation they are not at the fore front anymore. The market is forward thinking.

I love the iPhone but I just don't have the desire to upgrade regularly anymore. My phone is becoming less important day-to-day, I rarely touch it... I listen to the odd podcast and answer a rare phone call. As I work in tech I'm pretty much always in front of a Mac or an iPad where I can respond to messages and it is by far my preferred way to communicate with people.

I get my phones through a carrier, currently iPhone 8, and worked out it would be almost double each month to get the newer model, for what, to sit on my desk looking pretty?

I don't even blame Apple for this, their phones are great and so is the tech, it's modern, and isn't filled with gimmicky rubbish... they just need to wake up and realise people aren't as bothered anymore, phones, in general, are saturated and innovation has slowed down... their 3-4-5-year-old phones are still fast and reliable.

Personally, I think they need a slower release cycle. We don't need one every year...

I don't see how that's any different from when we had the 6S, 6S Plus, and SE.

6s was just the "updated" 6.

6s Plus was the larger screen. Pretty straight forward.

It's like releasing model A and then model A+ then model B then model B+. You pretty much know what you're getting w/ just a few bells and whistles added.

Wow. I’ve never seen Apple release this kind of statement and with this kind of length. Sheesh.

Idk what the future has in store.

What I have learned over the years is that the more you write the more you try really hard to find excuses. It’s like when u don’t want to go out with friends sending a 400 characters text on why you are not coming instead of being like „not in the mood“
