Making something up when you dont know the answer is the same thing as lying. Sales people do that all the time, they could just say "I dont know" but apparently thats bad, so they lie by making something up, considering how widespread it is I would be surprised if it wasnt encouraged by managers as a "tactic"

exactly my point

Making something up when you dont know the answer is the same thing as lying.

What if the rep doesn't know the answer to something, then according to you they lie by making something up rather than stating that they don't actually know...but happen to provide the correct information merely by happenstance? Is it still a lie?

What if the rep thought they knew the right answer, but the answer was actually wrong..is that a lie? What if that incorrect information was provided to the rep earlier by someone who was making something up because they didn't actually know the answer...are they both lying? Is one of them a liar by proxy?

What if I called Apple's support people and asked the rep how many pages are in the owner's manual for an Apple IIe (because maybe I base my purchasing decisions on the heft of said manuals, and I'm willing to buy antique tech to satisfy that criteria)? Speaking of which, why doesn't Apple deduct the price of all that paperwork they no longer provide, from the cost of their new machines? Used to you paid for, "stuff," and now you get less, "stuff," doesn't matter if you would use it or not, you should be compensated for the disparity! So much stuff has changed over the years, these new Apple products should be free! And Apple KNOWS IT!!

OMG, Apple is systematically lying to everyone when what they should be doing is giving everyone free computers! Class action lawsuit time!!!11!!one!!

When i was younger i used to work in customer service and sales for an energy company and we used to get so many calls where your knowledge was constantly tested from simple things like meter readings to more complex like gas bills, meter relocation, gas leaks etc. All calls were of course recorded and you also had to sell gas appliance cover along with plumbing cover and drainage cover.

You were expected to remember exactly how much each level of cover was, what it did and didn't cover and of course the pricing of it all too. Doesn't sound to bad until you realise there were over 40 levels of cover available. Of course we had cheat sheets with some details that we could refer too stuck to our work monitors but the bottom line was if you didn't know or wasn't sure about something then you would go and ask.

Now im not saying they lied purposefully or anything it was probably just a mistake but what is and isnt included in current models should be an easy task and for older models should only really be a quick 'let me check for you sir' response away.

I've seen reps on the floor of my local apple store telling people that 'the screens on the new macbooks are exactly the same as on the pros, only smaller.

-1, either for honesty or competence

Technically it is true, they are the same quality and have the same pixel density (or very close to it), they just made it smaller, therefore it has a lower resolution.

Yes, instead of ill informed sales reps, Apple spends years training them with all the Apple-lore ... then retrains them to lie with great skill and avoiding passing on that information to the customers.
