Can you elaborate on "real notification system" and "pretend" one?
1. Blinky LED if I want one.
2. Icon in top bar that PERSISTS.
1. iOS can do that also. It'll blink the flash light if you choose to.
2. It's a different approach.
In both of your points, it's just different ways of doing things, not right or wrong or real or pretend.
Neither is PERSISTANT though. If I'm away from the phone for a while I have to dig dig dig to see if I missed anything.
there's a significant different though between a small blinky coloured LED to indicate what sort of notification you have most recently received, and programming your Bright LED flash to go off when there's a notification.
just by looking at a phone with a good LED notification system, you can identify what message you have. Currently, on my phone, Red flash = BBM, light blue = Facebook messenger, Dark Blue = Facebook, White = Email, green Whatsapp.
having your LED flash is nowhere near this convenient. unfortunately this isn't standard accross all of Android either AFAIK. and it is specific to the manufacutrer if they wish to give you an LED. Apple does not currently. BB is only currently giving a red LED IIRC and not even sure if the HTC One has any LED at all.
APPL doesn't care about AAPL's phone market share.

You can't know that. What if the Blackberry users went to Android (which would make sense since it's more similar), and some Android users went to iPhone? I don't see why it matters anyway.
Why should you feel irritated? Apple has been in second place for a few years now so you should be use to the feeling. I would be more irritated that iPhone 6 only catches up to Android phones from 1st quarter 2013. Android is always a few steps ahead of the game.
But I will say that Apple will have a huge 3rd and 4th quarter because people want a large iPhone. But I don't think Apple will take 1st place in the US for at least a year. But all Android OEM's have to do is undercut Apple in price and freebies. Samsung will just throw in a smart watch with their flagship phones or price it free on contract. I just love competition.
I think it's more about how you like it. For me, I don't want it to be persistent. In fact, I'll find it very annoying if it is persistent.
Curious question: If a notification is persistent, e.g. "light stays red" for twitter, will it still stay red if you have another notification came in after the first one?
Color: I feel like it's the same as custom ringtone for your calls. It seems to be convenient and nice, but then it's a nice to have feature and not that important anymore. I rarely set custom ringtone anymore. Like you said, each manufacture have different color settings. That makes it even more annoying rather than convenient.
Once again, it's different approaches and options. These don't make one a "real" notification system and other a "pretend" one.
6 million iPhones isn't very much on the country scale. I mean, it's only 0.6%. I'd say you can attribute that to "random" fluctuation.

If you ask for OS market share, there's nothing else they can give you. It would make more sense to not care about OS market share. There are so many cheapo phones that run some kind of Android just because it's the standard, and they're hardly part of the ecosystem. All those flip phones were replaced by really low-end smartphones running Android just to get people on data plans.
Yep. Wrong chart showing. WHEN MR notices it and puts the right chart up it will make more sense. Regarding the right chart... I sort of feel sorry for HTC. They make a great looking product but just don't know how to market it. Maybe they should steal someone from Samsung.
What's wrong with an icon on the lock screen that persists? Unless you mean that you want an icon to stay there if you get a notification while using your phone.

I don't feel sorry for HTC. Maybe their products look great, but they suck so badly, and they copy everyone too. If I wanted an Android phone, I'd buy anything but HTC.

I don't know about their products sucking because I haven't used any of their phones in the past few years. My contract is up in Sept and the One M8 is one of the choices I'm looking at, along with the S5, Note, and iP6 (if it's at least 4.7" as rumored). As for the 'copy everyone' thing, who cares. Seriously, who really gives a shoot? They all borrow features from each other.
The M7 is an awesome phone, and a couple of my friends have the M8 and it's even awesome-er! I don't think HTC sucks at all, and you'd be making a great choice if you went with the M8.

Not unimportant, but I wonder if a growth in iPhone market share in US is an indication of worldwide tendency. If you consider China GDP growth, it's worth considering worldwide market share as a trending indicator.
I say this because iPhone is far from being unanimous in Brazil as it is in US. The local business model is strongly based on buying unlocked phones, so iPhone is too expensive for most consumers. It's the opposite of USA where not buying an iPhone in a contract is a rather insane decision.

Id love to see this data showing the percentage of subscribers running the latest version of their respective operating systems. This is more important than a flat number of subscribers. Since a great deal of Android users arent running the newest versions, this would easily put Apple at the top of the list. Break it down by latest, one version behind, and older for an even better glimpse at the difference between iOS and Android (and the niggling others).
NICE: Where the hell is Apple buying them up and switching them all to iPhones before Google or Microsoft beats them to it?
When Samsung reports its quarter it will be found those sales estimates are way off. I doubt the actual numbers for any of them other than Apple are likely accurate. Further, my guess is Apple profit share will grow as a result of the give aways required to sell those phones.
