I still use my A1243 wired 10key keyboard from literally 2007. It has great travel distance and the aluminum is very stiff and well made. All of the wired and wireless apple keyboards since this one feel cheep and flimsy by comparison. I love this thing and you'll have to pry it outta my hands.

I rather have a good gaming keyboard that I can can type on with good key action. If I need to use the finger print reader I can reach over on the MacBook Pro 16 and touch the power button. I Don't use the finger print reader all that much, but I do type a lot. :)

The Logitech MX Keys keyboard is one of the best 3rd party keyboards on the market. It has a great feel, has a back-light, and is fully programmable. You can pick one of these up for 79eur (94USD).
The feel is questionable, in my opinion slightly worse. It also has trouble with unlocking FileVault drives (and recommends disabling it?). The software is buggy and still not running natively on Apple Silicon. Their unifying receiver is still not available with USB-C.

I am not saying the Apple keyboard is magnificent, but “the next best thing” is pretty crummy.

Not to sidetrack this conversation, but what do you love about the Mx? And does that chunky thing that props up the back (shown in this pic) to tilt the keyboard come with it? (I'm still pissed at Apple for charging more for Space Gray before.)

That “chunky thing” is the foot of the keyboard. It’s attached. I like the angle it creates and it’s very sturdy.

I can't believe we have a thread where most of the posts are complaining about an Apple device's price.

Apple has always been expensive. ALWAYS.

This keyboard is frankly a disappointment, but we love for our Apple stuff to match so us obsessive types will have to pony up, as usual.

Thankfully, I'm nary a Mac user anymore and the iPad Pro has FaceID, so I can skip this guy altogether.

Well maybe if the item wasn't an epic troll we would see less crying.

Inflation is a factor. A very small factor.

Nuance. Perhaps you've heard of it?

Things cost what produces the most profit, and that's a complex equation.

You mention nuance yet completely missed mine - citing what prices used to be is meaningless in an inflationary world and gives the image of someone more likely to yell at kids to get off his lawn than the image of someone who understands product evolution and pricing.

Facts:

Yes, you are correct. Product pricing for well differentiated / non-commodity goods is far more a function of consumer willingness to pay than it is a function of cost. Apple is pricing these additional models with an eye to upcharging for the added functionality. Which is another reason your comment of remembering when Apple sold wireless keyboards for $69 is specious at best.

I think many of the commenters here haven't stopped to think that they don't have to buy the TouchID versions of the keyboards if doing so wouldn't be a benefit to them.
