Amid mounting claims that Apple has acquired the iCloud.com domain, AppleInsider now reports that Apple is indeed using the "iCloud" name internally as it builds new versions of iOS 5 and Mac OS X Lion that will integrate with the service.
Apple has begun adopting the "iCloud" name within several products currently under development, suggesting the appropriately labeled moniker is indeed the frontrunner for the company's soon-to-debut Internet cloud service, which will span beyond streaming music, AppleInsider has learned.

According to people familiar with the matter, Apple is prepping beta versions of both iOS 5.0 and Mac OS X Lion ahead of its annual developers conference that integrate with a service dubbed "iCloud," enabling users to sync and store much of the same information they currently can with the company's existing MobileMe service, such as bookmarks, email, contacts and iCal events.
And while much of the recent discussion regarding Apple's cloud-based service has revolved around its negotiations with music labels to allow users to store music content on Apple's servers, the report also indicates that the service is in fact intended to go beyond music to include a full suite of services potentially including photo and video storage.

That disclosure is certainly not new, with reports dating back over a year pointing to a potential video component, with explicit mention of a MobileMe overhaul to support cloud-based storage of various media types coming in February. It is, however, reassuring to see renewed mention of capabilities beyond the music storage function that has received so much attention in recent weeks.

Can someone explain the difference to me between this and MobileMe? Weren't you always able to listen to music you put on MobileMe?

Never been a fan of cloud storage for everything, but I definitely would welcome a free service for school documents and such.

The icon is the iOS iDisk app. The rumor makes it sound like MobileMe might get another rebrand assuming they aren't just renaming iDisk (how many times until they finally get the service right).

I can't wait for something new to try out! I would love to stream my music honestly... Imagine if you could get like your car to stream your library OTA... that would be cool. expensive, but cool.

would be nice to use iCloud for backup and updates so we don't need computers for that, it would make the ipad a standalone device.

Oh God.

Apple is absolutely ridiculous.

They think that renaming a flawed product is going to make it better, when really they need to fix and overhaul the entire thing from the ground up.

First it was iTools.
Then .mac.
Then MobileMe.
Now iCloud?

Kinda ridiculous, if you ask me.

This is equivalent to Microsoft putting lipstick on all of their pigs.

How do you know they haven't "fixed and overhauled the entire thing from the ground up" and that's what this is all about?

I think it will be more polished this time around and most likely directly integrated into OS X and iOS. No separate apps etc. It will hopefully be invisible to the user. Just go to settings, sign in with Apple id, and let the OS automatically sync everything between devices and the cloud.

I never really liked the name MobileMe. iCloud seems like a better name for the service, but we’ll see.

This mac is going to awesome

with the cloud base system, touch screen imac. this will be a product that will revolutionize the industry again:apple:

I have never been a fan of Cloud but...

recently, I have been trying to get more and more files and folders on the cloud just because I can use and edit them anywhere.

Cloud is the future for sure; 500GB for 50$/year and I'm in :D. [Well that's in the future]

Really, all your data across all your devices at seamless speeds with seamless integration. I am in bitch.

It wont be exspensive. aside from their Macs, Apple is directing their products towards the mainstream everyday person.

You are so right...All Apple is doing is renaming the service.

Sure, there is that little thing where they spent billions to build a huge datacenter to augment the service, but no, its the renaming that is the biggest change they are making.

I think we're still a couple a year from there...

i for one believe the new data center will
bring iPad to stand alone status-that would
be a huge gamechanger for pad computing, apple can pull it off...
