Yeah because back when Google started in 1998 they weren't making anything of their own, they looked at Apples Spotlight technology and tried to copy it and use it on the internet, and to get a revenue stream they also completely ripped of iAds. And then Gmail was totally ripped off from Apples Hotmail serv... no wait, Hotmail is Microsoft, never mind.
Reality might be much too harsh for some.

Funny, I'm the opposite. I migrated away from mac.com/mobileme a while back to Google, but after picking up an iPhone last year and a used 1st gen iPad this past spring, I'm more than happy to go back to a nicely integrated solution, even if that means paying for it.

If it isn't free it will fail. Simple as that.

MobileMe is a paid service that is so bad that by now I have taken upon me the huge step of completely migrating to the free Google offerings which sadly are far superior. Sad but true.

And Apple will have to do a LOT to get me to move back again.

You realize that you can purchase a 1TB if not more HDD and just do a regular back-up. Another option is a NAS. $50/500GB get real. $50/5TB seems more doable considering HDD space is getting cheaper by the day.

Having your data living in two geographically separated locations is a good thing. Just look at Fox News or CNN at the goings on in the world will tell you this.

i would deffo be up for icloud for $50!

it would be nice that i can back everything to my time capsule, then stream it anywhere seamlessly with icloud

i also migrated from mobileme to google, and tbh after much hesitation i really love dropbox so unless this is drastically improved over idisk and as mentioned by others - it is integrated with ios and osx i will stick with google

Exactly, Google NEVER invented anything, they copied everything from Apple, even stuff Apple didn't introduce until 10 years later, or still haven't introduced, because, you see, Apple waited, lured them in a trap for tomorrows law suit.

"Cool story, bro."

Veiled sarcasm met with veiled sarcasm.

How do you know they haven't "fixed and overhauled the entire thing from the ground up" and that's what this is all about?

Once Apple screws up, they go silent, they hide, or they BS their way through it with the support of their cult, Oops, I meant to say worshipers...ala Antennagate.

So who knows if they will ever get it right?

would be nice to use iCloud for backup and updates so we don't need computers for that, it would make the ipad a standalone device.
I think we're still a couple a year from there...

I'm not so sure, apps and music are already on there servers so its mostly user data and updates. Updating and backup could happen in the background when the device is plugged in at night.

Cloud in the idea of replacing local media storage is really stupid. Look what happened just a few days ago with Amazon's cloud service, apparently some people lost their data when the server unexpectedly crashed.

Lack of stable connections, company running your storage space (who are in the business to make money), and lack of speed seems to be nothing I want.

Don't count on it, at least don't count of full functionality. We .mac email users have to use old profiles on our iOS devices to keep the ability to use @mac.com with email. There is a hack out there, but you lose push email ability, which kind of negates one of the prime reasons for subscribing in the first place. I get that Apple has (stupidly I think) retired .Mac, but this does not mean they should abandon us long time users of the service. If Me.com is replaced by iCloud, then I would expect the same treatment we .mac guys have gotten from Apple Consumer Electronics.

Goo fan trolls don't have .Mac accounts. Nice try.

As I said elsewhere.

Cloud storage has to be 100% secure (they need full backups of your data)

And had to be 100% private. No-one must be able to gain access to any of your data.

If it's potentially going to lose your data, or someone can snoop in there and see your files, then who would use it?

I call b.s. too. I have my .Mac account (and I can use .me as well), no issues with my Mac Pro/iPad/iPhone 4. My parents have .Mac still and a few of my friends, not one issue.

What is this "fix" or "work around" for those who have .Mac accounts?

This is why I don't think cloud computing on a large scale is a good idea.

Because some EBS volumes were unavailable for a few hours. You are of course much better off just keeping your data on your laptop and hoping for the best...

The Amazon outage was an outage of one service in one availability zone. Companies that properly built their apps for high availability were not affected at all. People who didn't, would have eventually been screwed no matter where they kept their servers.

Really Antenna-gate is your example? The phone went on to not only be the #1 selling phone in the world (and is still the #1 phone in at least the US) with the highest customer satisfaction ratings. Let me guess, all those people are morons or in some reality distortion field.

P.S. Dear people in charge of this forum, can you please make it easier to ignore people. I would love to just be able to right-click on maclaptop and click ignore instead of having to go into my control panel.

My speculation:

iCloud will be the new MobileMe, and it will be either way more worth the money or become free.

I also think apple's new datacenter will come into play with this.

The cloud thing I am good on. The $4.5 million says they have more money than sense. How about $100 off every notebook?

$4.5 million is about 4 cent per device Apple sold last year, a lot of money still but $100 per notebook would cost Apple $1 billion a year if the pricecut didn't double the notebook sales.

Delete and re add your mobile me/mac account on your iOS device and see what happens

I am more than happy to, in the future, be using "Cloud" systems to keep backups of my data, and allow me to access any of my data wherever I am in the world.

My 1st upload of about 1.5 Terrabytes is going to take a little while I guess.

I just would not wish to use any such service that's in any way linked to one company or it's devices, if you know what I mean.

I would want it just independent storage with no "Corporate tie ins"

Of course, I would want to be able to access my cloud data from whatever device I own now or in the future.

Really?

They couldn't have just stuck with .Mac?? I liked that name. Haha.

Except for the whole MobileMe launch debacle, I have enjoyed the .Mac/MobileMe service since 2005 (I actually had an iTools account way back when under a different user) and will use iCloud or whatever it is called when that is rolled out. I tried to quit last month (didn't have the $99), but I realized that I have grown accustomed to the syncing services, gallery, and, of course, the e-mail. One request: don't take away my @mac.com e-mail address and if it does become free I would like some of my money back (I renewed just a few weeks ago). :)

Would it not make financial sense for Apple not to name it anything Apple/Mac related and stick with something generic (iCloud) and make it available and usable to PC owners also?

They could make subscription money from the whole world then as opposed to only Apple customers.
