Hope its faster than MobileMe

Speeds on it are very slow. But then again I doubt the new data center was build around 9600 baud dial-up modems.:)

Oh God.

Apple is absolutely ridiculous.

They think that renaming a flawed product is going to make it better, when really they need to fix and overhaul the entire thing from the ground up.

First it was iTools.
Then .mac.
Then MobileMe.
Now iCloud?

Kinda ridiculous, if you ask me.

This is equivalent to Microsoft putting lipstick on all of their pigs.

I think it will be more polished this time around and most likely directly integrated into OS X and iOS. No separate apps etc. It will hopefully be invisible to the user. Just go to settings, sign in with Apple id, and let the OS automatically sync everything between devices and the cloud.

I don't think those services were pigs at all. They were all evolving and they picked names that helped move their product during their specific marketable time. .Mac was changed to MobileMe so the average person would understand it was also for MOBILE devices. Hence the "Mobile" in the name.

I think they will keep MobileMe and add iCloud as another services used in conjunction with MobileMe or keep separate.:)

As long as I can keep my @me.com email account, I don't care what they call the new service.

I'm really curious as to how they're going to update MobileMe into this. I'm just glad for my unlimited data now.

Don't count on it, at least don't count of full functionality. We .mac email users have to use old profiles on our iOS devices to keep the ability to use @mac.com with email. There is a hack out there, but you lose push email ability, which kind of negates one of the prime reasons for subscribing in the first place. I get that Apple has (stupidly I think) retired .Mac, but this does not mean they should abandon us long time users of the service. If Me.com is replaced by iCloud, then I would expect the same treatment we .mac guys have gotten from Apple Consumer Electronics.

I think we're still a couple a year from there...

Yes, sadly Apple's moved into the slow lane.

Trundling along like an old dump truck full of coal, weaving about the highway, I wonder what's happened.

They don't seem to be able to match the pace of Goggles project development.

You mean like Buzz, Wave and GoogleTV?

Any improvement over MobileMe is welcome, but to really knock this out of the park it needs to be the official dropBox for iDevices and as others have hoped, a way to cut the tether.

There should be a file pool locally stored on the device but always synced to other computers/devices on same account (like DropBox). This would make things so much easier for serious work on an iPad. Use a sweet iPad app to create an art or music asset, sit down at your computer and find it right in the iCloud folder automatically to work with further. Plus, view/play it as music on your wife's phone. No file management actions required.

To make this the de-facto standard, however, a moderate amount of cloud space needs to be available to EVERY iDevice/Mac user for absolutely free. The key to paying for all that free service is the music licensing. Anything bought through iTunes doesn't take up your cloud space as it streams from one shared file. This gives an extra incentive to BUY music from iTunes/Apple. Extra revenue, right there. I know I'd stop checking for better prices at the Amazon music store myself if this was the case.

The numbers may not add up, but there is the potential for tremendous added value to all Apple products if they can offer this as a starting point for every Apple hardware purchaser without extra cost. Of course, upgrades to storage can cost per year. Seems to be doing well for the DropBox people. I wonder what the $100 a year for Mobile Me would get me in iCloud space?

If iCloud music ends up being one-copy of official iTunes song per person then I'm out. I have a lot of non i-Tunes music. I want my own private digital locker with no interference or DRM checking!

Please explain. I have an @mac.com e-mail address and it works just fine. I set it up as mobileme and login with @mac.com instead of @me.com. From there, it's indistinguishable. I also get push e-mail no problem.

High hopes for iCloud (or MobileMe, which sounds cooler)

this service BETTER be a FREE service. With Google and its free services and Microsoft with Windows Live, Apple has got to step it up! Even if they offer expandable options at a small fee, the baseline syncing service must be free!!

Then talk to the music companies, not Apple. They are the ones who will determine if what you want is what they will allow. They are the ones who push DRM.

Didnt they pay millions for mobileme.com and me.com a few years ago? They could have just given that money to me if they are now going to dump it. Is should apply for a scholarship...

Ummm, looks like you need to watch some episodes of Reading Rainbow before you look for scholarships. Walk before you run, my son.
