Next step is never allowing non App Store apps.

So, what we have here is a company that slows down older iPhones that makes it impossible to skip updates on Macs. So far I trust them with my privacy, not with their tricks to slow down your hardware and make you buy new hardware.

Why doesn't Apple just force us all to upgrade, then compensate us for our productivity losses and the costs of our expensive software that no longer works properly after the upgrade? Voila. /s

You laugh, but Microsoft does exactly that.

Well it sounds like the Air isn't for you. I've used them and have friends who own one and they love it. You can't make everyone happy though.

I've got nothing against the Air; I just got tired of people bitching about its performance when they were trying to do their work. You know, a bit more than just browsing the web and reading email. The Air's are great, but in the environment where I work, they proved to be not up to the task for day to day work for the users that had them.

Apple becomes more and more (Mac) user hostile. Screwing people over with a security update? What a joke.

Do Apple execs still use their own OS? I don’t believe so.

It’s just another sign of the iOSification of macOS. After QuickTime X, the Airport Utility, Photos, Disk Utility redesign, the Mac App Store (redesign), the horrible new Music, TV and Podcast apps this is just another example of Apple wanting to lock down macOS to a consumer OS. They slowly push away everybody who started using the Mac as a professional over the last 15 years, because people actually thought Apple had the guts to build a productivity OS.

These kind of changes are gonna hurt sales. I’m definitely not gonna upgrade until Apple commits more to the Mac for at least a year.

Soon it'll be like the obnoxious microsoft update app, which I finally figured out how to delete/disable.
Wait so you're running Windows without any security updates? LOL

The moment they removed Dashboard, I gave them the middle finger.
My old iMac ran just fine on Snow Leopard despite Lion, Mountain Lion, and Maverick came out after that.
Keep pissing off the customers and they will move on.
Move on to Windows? Linux?

Apple has given software devs years of notifications to fix their apps. If apps are still on 32 bit it's because the devs have abandoned it. Unfortunately devs will make software and not do updates but still sell it. At some point they have to update their OS. From my understanding you still have the ability to say no you don't want to install updates and you can turn off automatic updates.

Sometimes the devs no longer exist, or it has indeed been abandoned but the software is still useful and there's no replacement.

I can still run 20 year old software in Windows 10. I can understand Apple's desire to push things forward, they could at least just be more polite about it.

If I had known beforehand how horrible Catalina was going to be on my Mac, I would not have updated. Catalina has a terrible experience. In the 10+ years I've had a Mac I've never had a software update cause this many issues. I can no longer edit my large audiobook collection because it's on Apple Books and it no longer allows me to edit metadata. The worst is I can also no longer bring my Mac when I travel for work because the captive network assistant is broken. The pop up for hotel/public wifi doesn't show up unless I boot in safe mode. It's really annoying and there is still no software update that has fixed this.
This is exactly why I wait for everyone else to beta test the release and my software vendors to certify compatibility.

That's one of the big differences between macOS and Windows when it comes to software. OS updates still aren't required. All you get is notifications saying an update is available. You can choose not to update or if you update run an older version of macOS in a VM. I'm not sure what you mean about them being polite? Do you want them to say please?

Wow even while you’re in the middle of working?
I watch deadmau5 streams and the comments are always saying he got restarted from Windows updates so that kinda makes sense ¿
No. Usually what happens is Microsoft releases an update, and you have like a week of Windows nagging you to update, before it decides to perform the update while you're not using your computer. Of course, at any point during that week if you reboot manually it will install, too.

Any apps that use the newer APIs don't lose information, either.

For major releases, Microsoft does not force the install until the version that you're running is EOL'd. For some branches, that may mean that your computer doesn't update the major version of Windows for multiple years (unless you update manually).

fine with me. I have auto updates on my Mac and phone and watch and Apple TV. it's just easier. it's annoying when people on forums complain about incompatible items when they purposefully stay on OS's many years old. stay current, it's not hard.
So Mojave is the last MacOS version with 32bit support.
I have some apps that are no longer available and others I would need to spend cash for to update.
An update from Mojave to Catalina costs money outside of Apple.

The problem is when Windows decides to do updates it doesn't take into account what projects you have. If your computer is just for social media and watching stuff online that's not a big deal but if you're using it for work it's terrible.

This is correct. When you run the Catalina installer it will list what apps if any are 32 bit and give you the opportunity to cancel. Some people who like to click next without reading things don't see this though

I have two computers running the latest version of Catalina, but there's one computer I'd like to keep at Mojave. Catalina is fine for me and I have had no issues in my daily use, but I also like Mojave which I have on my 2015 MacBook Pro and I'll likely continue to use Mojave as long the apps I use on it continue to work well.

Sorry Tim, I’m not going to upgrade to the Catalina Experience. I don’t want Apple Music (a service I don’t use and never will shoved down my throat. I also don’t want Apple TV+ trash shoved in my face either.

I bought the product and I don’t want advertising on my operating system. Already annoying on Mojave. The bugs present in Catalina ad the fact that my 2014 MBP works just fine and continues to receive security updates for the time being isn’t going to incentivize me. Once there are no more security updates, I’ll be forced to upgrade. Hopefully Catalina’s successor will be much better
You talk a lot of things you did not try

I don't have a problem with the notification update badge. What I do see heading our way in the future is Apple making it impossible to downgrade once they stop signing a lower version OS release like it happens with iOS/iPadOS.

I think the community was pretty well accepting of Windows 10 doing this.

Yes, but at least with Windows 10 you aren't FORCED into buying new hardware!

I love Apple BUT they are going to force me back into the cheaper Windows Hardware camp!

Sorry, Apple. I'm not touching Catalina with a 10 foot pole. I've read and heard too many horror stories. This will be the first macOS release I've skipped entirely since becoming a Mac user in 2008.

Exactly the same for me. The SMB problems are the main reason for me not to upgrade and probably skip Catalina altogether.
