This is so pathetic by Apple lol. If they were hurting for money I could see this making sense. This simply just cements my position with using Google Maps. Far superior anyways.
Tbf people can’t really complain about Apple ads and say they will go to Google Maps. Just went to the Google map app (have both downloaded) and they have ads (a lot more). They call it “local vibes (I’m assuming it local generated ads masquerading as randomized places to check out).”

But to be fair, I think Google Maps is a superior maps, with gas prices built in (which we can all use rn) and better 1st person coverage, etc. so I stomach the ads there.

Steve was literally pushing for an advertisement based operating system all the way back from 1999 until as late as 2010, he was not your savior.
He literally had a patent for showing a 60 second video advertisement on every Mac boot, from 1999.
The idea that he wouldn’t eventually do this is laughable, of course he would. He wasn’t dumb.
I actually took advantage of a precursor of that feature to give my friend a startup video with a logo animation I made for their company. 🙂 Didn’t know that’s what it was going to be for!

Apple says that advertising information is not linked to an Apple Account to preserve user privacy, so ads viewed and interacted with will not be associated with an Apple Account. Data is not collected or stored by Apple and not shared with third parties, according to Apple.
That's not the issue. Well, it's not the only issue. Ads just ruin the user experience, IMO.

Garmin and TomTom make GPS map devices that can send the directions to the vehicle (or iPhone) over Bluetooth. So far, no adds. These units' maps can be updated and the entire device moved between vehicles. My 2012 Ram 2500HD has not had any internal radio navigation up dates in over 10 years. But the large Garmin RV map drive gets updates and the device can be replaced when necessary.

My 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser was built in December 2020 and the production of the vehicle stopped 1 March 2021. There have been no updates to the map system since new and there have been lots of road changes here in Arizona. I have the smaller Garmin RV navigation device for the Land Cruiser so have up to date maps.

No adds on these RV Navigation units yet.

I’ve used Apple Maps for many years now, I’m not aware of any trouble. It just works.

I do not like the idea of ads though.
Same. Ive stuck with the Apple Maps since inception as I wanted to get away from Google. It only had some problems the first few years with less searchable stuff, but besides that has been great and I use it often.

As much as Cook has been a good CEO for the most part, every now and then he falls back into COO mode and comes up with something that makes financial sense but that a good CEO should veto for the bigger picture of the brand and the customer experience.
Somehow I already think they thought this through.

Here is what needs to be done: Write software that collects ads shown on the Maps app. Basically, it reads the screen. Run this on a server. Keep a list of advertisers. Publish this as a "blocking list" that people can download for free. The list is used to block internet content.

If this service becomes widely known, no one in their right mind would buy an ad to appear on the Maps app.

If you think this is hard, then look at "Pi-hole". https://pi-hole.net It does just what I described. It removes ads from a phone or computer. All that remains to be done is adding the advertisers to a list. It could even be crowd-sourced, where users send in the data manually. There are lots of people who make a hobby of compiling lists of advertisers. You don't need big money to do this.
