If the revenue from ads is purely for funding the staff and improving the quality of the offering. I'm potentially ok with it. If it's going to be a profit center, then I am somewhat troubled by the descent into selling their customers.

So, one more reason to stay away from 26.5. Got it.
I mean, if Apple offer a superior mapping product comparing to their competition, then they may have grounds to include this junk.
But, let's be honest here. Do they?
In the US, they do. I recently used Google Maps via CarPlay just because I thought Apple Maps was wrong about the location. One big difference I noticed was a lack of lane guidance. Google has this available in 30 metro areas, so, good if you live in one of those areas. I apparently don’t. 🙂

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s driven by companies threatening to fight Apple in the EU if Apple doesn’t give them more opportunities to advertise to Apple’s customers.

Since I am staying on iOS 18, I wonder if I will get ads
Nah, you’ll just eventually (potentially)have your security compromised by a zero day. With many folks opting to upgrade, it’s a beacon to malicious actors when they find out what OS a particular iPhone user is using. And, the more folks upgrade, the brighter that beacon becomes.

I’ve used Apple Maps for many years now, I’m not aware of any trouble. It just works.

I do not like the idea of ads though.
Depends on the area....

New developments near me, somtimes it can drop you at a random house half a mile away and insist that its the address when its nothing close.

My biggest issue with Apple Maps is the idiotic session management. I program routes into Apple Maps for several stops, I get out of the car just far enough for CarPlay to disconnect, I come back to the car, reconnect and it suggests going home and has wiped out my half driven route forcing my to reenter it. (and adjusting your route works via the phone when not connected to car play... once connected, you can add a destination but you can't change the order... clearly Apple Maps developers never actually use it for anything work related)

I will be staying on 26.3.1. This is not just due to ads on Apple Maps but I also find the os is being loaded with things I am not interested in and I find it difficult to turn it off and impossible to remove. Windows is going/gone the same way. I will just maintain a windows laptop with up-to-date software that I need to use where security is important.

My iPad will be solely for content consumption and not have anything of interest on it, unless someone wants to break into my netflix account. At some point the apps may stop working. I can live with that.

One of things that attracted me to Apple systems in the first place was the lack of advertising. Apple interfaces were clean with no insane popups and screen real estate being taken up by advertising. Google Maps, for example, although very good, can get overwhelmed with ads when you do a search to the point that it is difficult to find the place you are looking for. And note the precious screen real estate taken up when you do a search and get a map plus a load of rubbish advertising. I want to see the map not some ad pushing something I am not at all interested in. We pay a premium for Apple products and services and part of the pay off is that they have never pushed advertising and unnecessary promotional content at you.

I have always sworn to never pay for a service that delivers advertising. To that end I would have no problems if Apple offered an ad free version of Maps for which I had to pay. But if I am forced to take it, I am pretty sure I am going to use my BMW's built in system, which I was surprised to find out when I accidentally used it the other day, is pretty good. I can send my destination to the car from my phone, iPad or computer without using any mapping application anywhere except the built in car system. We are going backwards.

Hence the need for a foldable iPhone? Haha. Boo on Cue and Cook.

Well, looks like 26.4.1 may be the end of the line for my iPhone 17 Pro.

Dear cyber hackers, please be kind to those of us end up stuck on old versions of iOS in order to avoid more ads.
