Privacy is a differentiator for Apple, it's a marketing thing like AirPlay or iMessage. They can't talk about camera tech anymore since Google beats them, so they have to have something to sell.

So let me get this right. I pay for my mobile plan, which is expensive these days (Verizon). Which supplies the data I use for maps. Now you’re telling me, you’re going to use the data I pay for to serve me ads on maps? I have and Apple One subscription (News) and after paying $1600 for my phone, you’re still going to shove ads down my throat?

I think not sir. It’s already out of hand. I pay for my data. Don’t use my data to show me ads unless you’re going to reimburse me. I am legit getting tired of this. Why choose Apple anymore then?

This abuse of my data plan is an important reason why I object to ads, especially the automatically downloaded and played video variety.

Since I'm pretty invested in the overall Apple ecosystem I keep hoping their maps app gets better. It has actually gotten a lot better over the years but every time it improves so does Google maps keeping it still firmly in the lead over Apple maps. I'd have better integration with other Apple apps if I used their maps but they need to come closer to Google maps before I switch over.

But it's also far better. We only bothered with Apple Maps because it had no ads and hence was not tracking us. If I need to be tracked I'd rather the best service track me rather than the worst.
While I’m definitely opposed to this, it unlikely that Apple “tracks” you even if they are displaying ads in maps in the future. They’re not in that business.

Show you ads for burger restaurants along your route when you’re searching for burgers, sure. Show you ads for burgers along your route because you searched for burgers a few days ago? Doubtful.

Except for the fact that Apple Arcade is not free.
Apple Maps is, or as close to free as a built in app can be.
Why are you taking a comment I made about Apple Arcade & Apple News from ages ago & relating it to Apple Maps when it’s got nothing to do with Apple Maps.

How dare a for profit corporation make money.
And making that money by maybe doing something their competition has done pretty much from the start. I'll still use Google maps because I find it better but adding a few paid search results (as long as they are labeled as such) is a quite minor annoyance.
