And making that money by maybe doing something their competition has done pretty much from the start. I'll still use Google maps because I find it better but adding a few paid search results (as long as they are labeled as such) is a quite minor annoyance.

If they make it ad free for Apple one customers id be ok with it.

That would be a nice touch. I still use Google Maps (better for me) and they have the paid search results. It's slightly annoying but scrolling a tiny bit isn't enough for me to get in a huff about.

It would be a value add. I forget I have Apple one sometimes.

I don’t have an issue paying for services to be ad free if the amount is reasonable.

Please explain why Apple’s maps app needs advertising?

For similar reasons that television networks/channels have advertising, streaming services have advertising, newspapers and magazines have advertising, etc. These companies want to generate revenue and profits from sources other than just subscriptions or retransmission fees and Apple wants to generate revenue and profits from sources other than just hardware/software sales or subscription fees.

Expensive products should provide a premium experience otherwise they have no justification for being premium.

Apple products like iPhone/iOS, Mac/macOS and iPad/iPadOS may be "expensive" or "premium" but that doesn't mean Apple Maps is. You can even access Apple Maps (Public Beta) on non-Apple devices for "free" (without paying Apple anything).

If it ever gets as close to being as bad as Android and Windows, I will leave and go to Linux and custom Android ROMs.

Same. I quit Windows 15 years ago for these reasons. My computer is solely a tool for my work. If Apple begins interfering with my tools by pushing ads in my face while I'm working, I will leave for Linux too. I am by no means loyal to Apple any more than I would be loyal to Home Depot if the tools I bought there started yelling at me to sign up for Apple TV while I'm working on my car.

So let me get this right. I pay for my mobile plan, which is expensive these days (Verizon).

These days? Feel lucky you aren't paying what mobile plans cost when the iPhone originally launched. The cheapest AT&T iPhone plan in 2007 was $59.99/month (1 line) which is around $92/month in today's dollars and it wasn't even unlimited talk/text.

Which supplies the data I use for maps. Now you’re telling me, you’re going to use the data I pay for to serve me ads on maps? I have and Apple One subscription (News) and after paying $1600 for my phone, you’re still going to shove ads down my throat?

What you may pay for Internet service/data or anything else related like electricity is pretty much irrelevant here.

I agree. It's already bad enough Apple has caved to the Orange Convicted Felon with the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico and now they're pondering ads? Hogwash! Boo Apple! Boo, Tim Cook!
At least it's not banner ads. Just the same sort of paid search listings that Google has done for a very long time.

Greedy, Greedy Greedy Tim Cook!
LOL! Apple Maps has been operating for 12 years under Cook and there's simply a rumor that they might introduce some form of ad support maybe in the future and your response is this?

I really hope this doesn't happen, but it is far below my threshold of "Greedy, Greedy, Greedy" in the current business world.

“To unlock your iPhone you’ll need to watch this advert first”
now THAT would be a problem. Paid search results is a minor annoyance but ads to unlock your phone would be a huge problem. Good thing they are only considering the minor annoyance.

Oh, the groundwork has 100% been completed for this to be real. Look up Apple Business Connect. All they need to do is add on an Ad module to business place cards and we’re set.

It’s not a matter if, it’s when.

I think I am pretty safe in saying that the only people who like ads are advertisers and the people who get paid to display them. So I challenge your starting point.
Well that’s easy to unravel. If they didn’t work, they wouldn’t be done. But everyday, countless people purchase products that they’ve seen in ads. They only do this because they like what they see, enough to purchase. Therefore what you postulate is impossible. If it was true, there would be no advertising anyway. So it can’t be true by nature of not only its existence, but its success in connecting people with products that they want.

Apple maps are built into iPhones and iPhones aren't free or low cost
