Apple is "exploring" the idea of showing search ads in the Apple Maps app, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Back in 2022, Gurman said software engineering was "already underway" to display ads in the Apple Maps app, but Apple did not move forward with the idea at the time. Today, he said Apple is "giving this notion more thought" again.

This time around, he said Apple has yet to start engineering work, so ads in the Apple Maps app might still be a ways away.

Ads in the Apple Maps app would not be the traditional banner ads that you see on websites, but rather paid search results. For example, a fast food chain could pay Apple to appear near the top of the results when a user searches for "burgers" or "fries." Many similar apps already offer search ads, including Google Maps, Waze, and Yelp.

Apple already displays search ads in the App Store, allowing developers to pay to promote their apps to users who search for relevant keywords.

Ads in the Apple Maps app would further boost Apple's services revenue.

If Apple starts doing ads in maps I’m done. They already have it in Apple News and I’m NOT on board with it. We pay allot for the services and if they’re gonna shove ads into more apps I’m sorry I’m done!

Just curious, where will you turn to then for your next phone? Not Android phones I assume since their map also has paid search results.

If “ad-free” ceases to distinguish Android from Apple, then something else might take its place… like pricing. I’m pretty locked in on the Notes app myself, but if it comes down to it I can find a plausible alternative.

From what I'm seeing in the right most picture these are merely "SUGGESTIONS" and they won't pop up until you do a search term. If your looking up what your looking up it isn't going to matter the suggestion underneath your search box. This looks to be very well implemented and I welcome this feature thank you for the suggestion I had no idea that restaurant was in my town. Ill consider it. Also it looks like to me apple maps is growing up. As an apple user you should see the bigger picture and feel reassured about your experience using apple maps now more than ever. If you really use Google maps you'll know this isn't something new. Sooo what's the issue?

Text book capitalism, monetizing everything. Bravo Apple.
At least in the world monetizing things this potential change has very little negative impact on users. I normally use Google Maps (works better for my needs) and I rarely even notice the paid ads. In some cases they are what I wanted to see anyway and in other cases I just have to scroll down a tiny bit to see the non paid ads.

"Many similar apps already offer search ads, including Google Maps, Waze, and Yelp."

That's why I don't use them.

Fine by me. Pour the ads in if you want Apple. People will either go elsewhere or simply put up with the ads.

Either way I'll be taking another vacation thanks to my Apple stock:cool:

The days of Steve squared are evidently long gone with this nail in the coffin. So it’s not enough to have the worlds biggest market cap… As a long term Apple user of 30 years and an Apple One Premier subscriber, the day they start cramming noticeable advertising into their core services is the day that I will start saying sayonara to Apple products and services. After all, they are no doubt aware that there are tons of cheaper and equally good, well designed alternatives to everything Apple hawks.

Criiiiinge.... save that for your Apple TV streaming service with like 2 good shows.. (that's hyperbole if it isn't clear for some..)

One of the main reasons I shell out so much for Apple products is because they rarely have ads anywhere, and the few that they do are very unobtrusive. For instance, I don’t have to worry about ads disguised as emails in my Mail client like the “New Outlook” users have to deal with. I really hope they don’t get into the habit of stuffing ads into more places.

Satya Nadella: “Those ads go away for the low low price of just $9.99/month!” 🙄
