These companies always start off all wholesome and amazing, but eventually the dark side creeps in and the greed takes over.
When was Apple ever “wholesome”?
I know the Steve Jobs worshiping and revisionist history is strong around here, but yeesh.
Are we even talking about the same company?
“Wholesome” has never been a description you could put on Apple.

Every time someone complains about iOS you always get this silly comment if you don’t like it go to android
So now everyone has just got to accept every silly idea they they implement
I mean, there’s no reason to go anywhere, just… Use a different mapping service.

I've finally realized that, for some people, there is simply nothing Apple could ever do that would make them be critical of Apple
Really? The opposite seems to be the case as well.
And yes, shocking revelation, the internet is full of different opinions…

Apple Ad’s crazy. The Apple News App, more Ad’s than news. The only good news so far, appears the Apple Ad’s are not tracking outside of Apple. Good chance the tracking Ad’s may appear. Wonder if one got into a crash while a Map’s pop up Ad was displayed while driving, would that be illegal.

Back in 2022, Gurman said software engineering was "already underway" to display ads in the Apple Maps app, but Apple did not move forward with the idea at the time. Today, he said Apple is "giving this notion more thought" again.

This time around, he said Apple has yet to start engineering work,
Read this again, this is Gurman - why do we take what he says for granted?
He needs to make an income, so he comes up with things…

There's a somewhat explicit term used to describe what is happening to Apple currently, that wouldn't be appropriate for these forums.

Unfortunately when the consumers are all out of milk, that's when the employees of the fruit company will be fired in order to maintain "growth and sustainability"... which is PR speak for "shareholder greed".

Literally the only difference between Apple and Google's business practices is that Apple harvests your data for it's own pockets, where as Google sells it to the benefit of everyone. (for those who don't know, you aren't actually sold, a unique ID with data gathered on your usage habits is sold, which can be reset or disabled any time)
Google isn’t selling our data for the benefit of everybody. They’re doing it for their own benefit, and because we’re a useful product to sell to other corporations. The party that derives no value from the transaction is the product being sold: us.

You know what? Maybe we need to have a worldwide recession. I’m tired of these companies viewing near-record profits as a failure. Every quarter has to be a new record. What’s wrong with merely having a good quarter?

This chasing of record profits every quarter is leading Apple down the path of ensh*ttification.
Because it’s not good enough for shareholders if they make even a dollar less than last quarter

Apple is "exploring" the idea of showing search ads in the Apple Maps app, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Back in 2022, Gurman said software engineering was "already underway" to display ads in the Apple Maps app, but Apple did not move forward with the idea at the time. Today, he said Apple is "giving this notion more thought" again.

This time around, he said Apple has yet to start engineering work, so ads in the Apple Maps app might still be a ways away.

Ads in the Apple Maps app would not be the traditional banner ads that you see on websites, but rather paid search results. For example, a fast food chain could pay Apple to appear near the top of the results when a user searches for "burgers" or "fries." Many similar apps already offer search ads, including Google Maps, Waze, and Yelp.

Apple already displays search ads in the App Store, allowing developers to pay to promote their apps to users who search for relevant keywords.

Ads in the Apple Maps app would further boost Apple's services revenue.

If they start showing ads, then they are getting rid of something that differentiates them. Small profits upfront aren’t necessarily good for the long-term.

This is what happens when  loses all those juicy Google billions. Suddenly  needs to replace that income with ads! They are shooting themselves in the foot regarding the argument as to why they don’t want to make a search engine. The whole thing makes me feel sick. 🤮🤮🤮

Apple has really two good arguments for not creating a search engine:

* It's extremely expensive
* It wouldn't be better than Google

Also a new one they could use:

* Generative AI is starting to take away search traffic

If true, then Apple has completely lost the plot on why people buy their products.

Google Maps is far better at providing information, but it has a bad UI cluttered with ads.

Apple Maps will never be as good in terms of information density, but people will give some of that up if the alternative is a better experience - which is currently is with Apple Maps.

But if they start showing ads, then the benefit of using Apple Maps versus over Google maps plummets.

how about actually improving the app?! like getting rid of the big white block at the bottom the the display which sucks for OLED screens.

how about intelligent offline maps that still allow you to use a small bit of cellular data just for traffic, cams, etc.

maybe a music skip button option for the map screen.

how about showing traffic on all nearby roads like old garmins used to rather than just the route apple picks so you can make on the go decisions.

instead of these simple usability tweaks, we’ll get ads

As much as iOS products cost versus the competition, there's no excuse for any ads. I remember when Steve Jobs stood on stage and said "we use these products too, and we don't like ads" when launching iCloud. How much things have changed.

This is a logical fallacy to me. You're just used to cheap products sometimes have more advertising than more expensive products.

I don't like ads either but I don't think buying expensive products make me immune to see them.

Can't wait to see the mental gymnastics the die hards who claimed apple would never do this do in order to justify apple doing the same thing they bash google for...
Was waiting for a post like this.

It’s going to be a while before and if this rumor comes true and if true what the implementation is like.
