This is the way. Ads make the world go ‘round. I love Apple but the anti-ad kool-aid has been the dumbest stuff ever, especially considering that Apple advertises. Eliminating spam practices = awesome. Just being anti ads = silly.

I have to laugh at every time Apple shows how greedy Apple is. All corporations are greedy, but Apple is on a different level. It's sort of like how you have that one coworker that uses sick days way beyond the norm. This is why I stopped drinking the kool-aid years ago. It all goes back to the years of wanting a bigger screen. People bought into how the smaller screen was the best because of one hand use. That was alot of serious coping back in those days. Anything to reconcile why one shouldn't want an android phone, especially a Samsung. Lol. Now look at where we are today with screen sizes. The same is happening with foldables. Oh yuk, the compromise of a little crease to get a compact form factor that opens to a bigger screen. Never, no thank you, I'll take this big oval cut out at the top of my screen, it's so much less distracting.
This is why I laugh. Apple does what it does because YOU let them. They know you will cope with any decision they make at your user experience. They know they have the biggest apologist user base. That's THEIR strength, and YOUR weakness. They have you believing, it's not about being first, it's about doing it right. While they tell you what's right for you. I know this because I've left that cozy warm group coping. So let's get this straight, an overwhelming number of you won't change jack, if Apple puts in those ads and you know it. Facts don't care about your feelings.

Just gonna leave this here…
Apple has been exploring ad supported operating systems since the late 90s.
They were exploring it again in 2009, around the same time that they were lowering the price of macOS. Not a coincidence.
And by the way, despite what Steve said about iCloud, they immediately… started advertising it to all customers the minute that it came out.
When you open Photos and it demands you set up an iCloud photo library, that’s an advertisement.
When you get those storage full pop-ups, those are advertisements.

iCloud Photo Library didn't even exist while Steve Jobs was alive.

I came to Apple in 2020 after being a life long Android and Windows user. I was so tired of the bombardment of data requests and ads. I have been super happy in the years since my transition as my tech life is much calmer with all the reduced noise. Lately though Apple seems to be turning against the reasons I entered this ecosystem, in a quest for infinite growth (this is impossible, and will eventually kill any company that pursues it to the end). If it ever gets as close to being as bad as Android and Windows, I will leave and go to Linux and custom Android ROMs. It will be a pain to give up an ecosystem of devices that works so well together, but given I would be hassled by intrusions on Apple's side, I might as well at least keep my dignity and take the hassles of Linux/FOSS ecosystem instead.

Because Apple started doing the bad thing ... being against the bad thing is "the dumbest stuff ever"?

Strange logic

Apple is "exploring" the idea of showing search ads in the Apple Maps app, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Apple-Maps-2024.jpg

Back in 2022, Gurman said software engineering was "already underway" to display ads in the Apple Maps app, but Apple did not move forward with the idea at the time. Today, he said Apple is "giving this notion more thought" again.

This time around, he said Apple has yet to start engineering work, so ads in the Apple Maps app might still be a ways away.

Ads in the Apple Maps app would not be the traditional banner ads that you see on websites, but rather paid search results. For example, a fast food chain could pay Apple to appear near the top of the results when a user searches for "burgers" or "fries." Many similar apps already offer search ads, including Google Maps, Waze, and Yelp.

Apple already displays search ads in the App Store, allowing developers to pay to promote their apps to users who search for relevant keywords.

Ads in the Apple Maps app would further boost Apple's services revenue.

Apple, don’t be stupid. This idea is BAD. Map apps are already busy screens, and the screens are small. NOBODY wants to see ads in Maps. If you do this, people will just move over to Google Maps faster.

Tim Cook = greedy
Steve Jobs = would never do this
Remind me again, what did Steve used to launch the Macintosh? An advertisement.
What did he use to relaunch Apple as the “Think Different” company? An advertisement.
When Steve and Apple encouraged you to purchase a copy of iLife and iWork to go with your iMac, what was that? An advertisement.
When you were pretty much forced to download iTunes to activate and synchronize your iPod iPhone or iPad, what was that? An advertisement.
When Apple pushed you to buy media from the iTunes Store, what was that? An advertisement.
When record labels promoted their new releases to the front page of the iTunes Store, what was that? An advertisement.
The idea that advertisements haven’t been embedded in Apple’s software strategy for decades is just ridiculous.

And which service are you gonna use that doesn’t have ads
OsmAnd, Organic Maps are my favourites.

Both FOSS, the only real downside is no live traffic data.
OsmAnd is very (!) complex and has tons of features, Organic Maps is quick&lite.

G.K. Chesterton had it right :

It is really not so repulsive to see the poor asking for money as to see the rich asking for more money. And advertisement is the rich asking for more money. A man would be annoyed if he found himself in a mob of millionaires, all holding out their silk hats for a penny; or all shouting with one voice, “Give me money.” Yet advertisement does really assault the eye very much as such a shout would assault the ear. “Budge’s Boots are the Best” simply means “Give me money”; “Use Seraphic Soap” simply means “Give me money.” It is a complete mistake to suppose that common people make our towns commonplace, with unsightly things like advertisements. Most of those whose wares are thus placarded everywhere are very wealthy gentlemen with coronets and country seats, men who are probably very particular about the artistic adornment of their own homes. They disfigure their towns in order to decorate their houses.

Apple:
-has you pay $1K for a phone
-has you pay a subscription price each month for storage
-shows you ads.

At this point I feel like I can just go back to Samsung because it’ll be the same experience.
  • get a new phone every 4 years so $250 a year for a phone
  • don’t directly pay for storage since use Prime to store photos and a mac for backups
  • Already have to put up with “Guides we love” in maps so ads are no big deal

Sorry guys but the overlords have dictated that ads are the backbone of society. Everywhere you look, everything you hear will be some sort of advertisement and there will simply be no escaping it. If it has a screen or a speaker it will have ads.

Capitalism has an inherent flaw that says you must make more money than you did last quarter. If you don't, you have failed and you'll be replaced by the board for someone who will. These companies always start off all wholesome and amazing, but eventually the dark side creeps in and the greed takes over.
