He was complaining that Apple didn't select a FAMOUS neighborhood 2000 miles away over a medium-sized city 900 miles away. I agree with you that proximity and recent search context matter; it is a map application after all, not an encyclopedia. The OR was complaining it should weight fame over proximity, as an encyclopedia should.

Actually, it sounded like he was in Los Angeles when he tried to find Hollywood on the map. Likewise, he was in San Francisco looking for the Golden Gate Bridge and was pointed to a diner with the same name (that error I can sorta understand).

However, if I were to type in Applebee's (just an example - I wouldn't actually eat at an Applebee's  ) it should show me the one right down the road, not one in a state that's a 4-day drive from me. Google Maps has done this to me as well, many times.

what about what we the customers (you know the ones that keep this game going) deserve? do we deserve to wait years for something still playing catch up because of an ego trip for executives in cupertino?

apple by trying to do so much in house is spreading itself too thin.

I don't disagree. That's why I was glad when Google finally released their non-native app and I use it to this day more than I do Apple's. I'm trying to dispel the notion here that tends to pervade that Apple just up and decided "we can do maps better than Google".

Or not, the only thing we knew is that they didn't agree so they parted

That's pretty boring for a forum that revels in opinion, outrageous or not.

How about just buying Yelp so I don't have to go to their ****** website or launch their ****** app to get more information about a location? Or how about giving me the ability to filter out POIs? Too much to ask?

Couldn't give 2 ***** about transit directions like 90% of the world.

So not being dependent on a fierce rival for a critical service is now considered "an ego trip?"

Remember, Google fired the first shot in this war. Apple's only alternative now is to remove any and all dependencies it has on Google. My question is: when will Apple implement its own search service?

And Apple's not alone. Plenty of other companies are in the process of extracting themselves from Google's iron grip. Samsung with Tizen and non-Google Samsung services in Android. Amazon with its degoogled, forked version of Android. Google has become a much bigger threat to the tech world now than Microsoft even dreamed of being in the 90s. The war will continue to spread.

It's not ego. It's business.

At least in Norway, electrical cars charge for free. Tesla have their own stations, and public parking lots are required to have atleast a few chargers.

Really? That's pretty nice, but then Norway is pretty nice. Was on a work trip where we worked out of Dombas a few years back. Got to drive around the southern section a bit and took the ferry from and back to Copenhagen. Had a real nice time in Norway. Oslo was real nice. Thanks!

Google would not update the native app to support turn-by-turn navigation so Apple was forced to do their own. I'm sure they got a little cocky and thought with their resources they could spit out a decent app. I'm glad they've realized their shortcomings and are trying to make it better.
it was a negotiation tactic. does anyone know the actual amount google was wanting? surely it'd be less than the cost of remapping the whole globe..

thats irrelevant. its apple that releases the client. apple knows very well how its users use mail and gmail has been the most popular for quite some time.

so basically apple dosent care if its users can use the client or not?

if apple wants to be a standard enforcer than they should do that behind the scenes and deal with the appropriate people and not let the end user suffer.

but im not blaming apple. i was responding to a poster who assumed just because that apple receives data they will improve.

Who can't use Mail.app with Gmail? I'm using it with two Gmail accounts right now and it works fine; I can get my folders, I can archive, I can trash....

Why do you assume they don't care?

I know, right? Google Maps was absolutely PERFECT from the first time it was released and even today they NEVER get anything wrong, right???

As insightful as the OP, I suppose.

They wanted to distance themselves from Google anyway. And it's not like they started a map from scratch.

Google rolled out transit directions ~2007. But lets not let a thing like facts get in the way

Clearly you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

Thank goodness I'm not the only one

More bells and whistles are great, but the basics still need to be addressed. My own street and address are incorrect in the Maps app and have been since its inception. I've reported the error too many times to admit, sent feedback to Apple, even written to Tim Cook. When people come to visit me, I have to say don't use Apple's Maps app. The "report a problem" button is a black hole. And don't get me started on how all the photos I've taken at home say they were taken on a street on which I do not live. First-world problem to be sure, but correcting map errors should be the easy part.

Well thanks for clarifying. The vagueness of your OP is what I was driving at in the first place.

Clearly you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

And we're all on pins and needles waiting for more of your shared wisdom.

To understand my point, read the OP.

I did. And IJ Reilly was merely pointing out that Google Maps is not infallible.

Because the Calendar App wasn't updated yesterday...

That's the exception more than the norm. In most cases, any serious UI problem you can expect to wait a year until the next release for them to fix. I think if iOS 7 had OS X's user base we'd still be waiting for any UI changes.

It's not ego. It's business.

when its to the detriment of paying customers.

it is ego when you think that you can do everything better. fact of the matter is that apple cant do that.

but i would be interested to hear how and to who google is a threat. the "grip" they have is far from one microsoft had. in fact if anyone behaves like microsoft or even worse its apple

Public transit? Hoorray, another US only feature. In Europe, no Flyover, no iTunes Radio, no iTunes TV shows and Siri in only a couple of languages. At least, Google focuses much more internationally.
