I hope so badly that they release one at the same size as the current device.

Come on, Apple, let's shake this up.

iPad Nano / iPad Mini 4.7" / iPad Mini 5.5" / iPad Air 3 / The New New iPad

To go along with...

iPad Mini 4 (7.9") / iPad 9.7" / iPad 10.5" / iPad Pro 11" / iPad Pro 12.9"

IT'S SO EASY!

So an iPod touch is just an iPhone without cellular, right? That's the ONLY difference?

And the design, and the colors, and the under-clocked processor, and the ram, and the camera, and no NFC, no GPS, and the lower resolution, and no 256gb option, and no wireless charging.

It's essentially fair to compare the newest, current iPod Touch (still being sold at its full price) to an iPhone 6 - just overpriced and outdated.

Never own full fledges iOS device like iPhone/iPads, though I have multiple 2010-2012 cheese grater, and recently got mid specs of 15 inch MBP. My merely iOS device is just 6th generation iPod Touch I bought from 2016. If they make upgraded 7th generation, I am they target market.

Just make sure iPod still preserve 3,5 mm jack, not fun for dedicated music player missing that. Having flat edge like iPhone circa 4-5s/SE and having touch id is great addition. Basically, Wi-Fi only iPhone SE.

I am choose iPods just to enter Apple mobile ecosystem without breaking bank, doing some testing, and off course dedicated music player.

In the past I was so hopeful for a USB-C iPhone, but using a USB-C-only MacBook Pro for the past year and a half, I'm less excited. The ports wear out super easily, and even the lightest pressure on the port causes disconnects. We have about 100 or so MacBook Pros at work, and a large number of them have bad or failing ports now. There's a nice mechanical click when you plug them in when the laptop is new, but after a few months of heavy use that's gone and the port is just loose.

The universality is great, but the physical port design could have used some more work. Maybe Apple just uses a terrible part on its laptops and the one on the phone will be better. I'll be sad to see Lightning go.

Another iPod would be stupid
Why? It's a great, cheap way into the iOS/Apple ecosystem. At this point, between iMessage, FaceTime, Skype and a host of others you could basically use it as a phone wherever you can get wifi -- and with a monthly bill of zero dollars. Hell, you could pay for an Apple Music subscription, a big iCloud plan and still be spending only a fraction of the monthly phone bill for a typical iPhone user.

Believe it or not, there are people who don't have the extra money to spend on an expensive wireless plan and who might like to use an iOS device.

You don't *have* to get a plan with a phone. Why do so many people not understand this? Instead of getting $200 for your old phone on eBay, keep it without a plan. Perfect for kids or friends with no money.

Well first you gotta spend $100 on a new battery...

We bought one for my son. It's a 5th or 6th gen and gets iOS 12 updates. It's perfect for him, to play games on and hold. Rather, than a big 'ole tablet. Plus, it keeps my kids off our iPhones and not dropping ours. Almost, thinking of buying another for my daughter.

Exactly!
I have the Gen 5 and support for that and the last revision was V9.3. With that, you can't download any new apps and old ones won't work well. I can't get updates for iTunes either. If you were able to update then you must have the Gen 6.

I'd love to see the iPod Touch and the iPad mini get another round of refreshes, instead of letting those products languish into obscurity. I think that these products are still useful for both consumers and for businesses who want to use them for work or app development/testing.

There's definitely a market for an updated iPod Touch - certainly for younger kids. My 7 year old daughter wants one, and she's definitely too young for an iPhone - and at £1000+ a pop there's no way I'll be forking out for one of those any time soon!! - It still needs to retain the headphone jack, as Airpods are way too expensive and are certain to get lost with a 7 year old in charge. - Kids need access to cheap headphones (in my daughter's case - pink & fluffy) so they don't irritate everyone around them when using the device. Also - I don't like the idea of kids wearing earbuds, as they would likely get them lodged in their ears or pick up ear infections from sharing them with their friends. If Apple try to market an updated iPod touch at twice the price with no headphone jack, it will miss it's core audience by a mile.

Not to mention the rumors of Apple releasing a new over ear headphone this year. There is tremendous market for them to explore HD Audio via FLAC type file systems with devices that can power some high scale headphones/DAC's.

The iPod touch used to have the same (or close) screen and processor as the current iPhone.

Now that the USB-IF has announced support for what is essentially hardware DRM, you can bet that Apple will be including USB C on all of their iOS devices. This allows Apple to produce devices with a USB-C port that will only support certain approved USB-C cables/adapters.

Bingo! Apple won't give up the licensing revenue it makes by certifying accessories for iOS. It's the ONLY reason they are still clinging to Lightning.

iPod Touch would be a great product in emerging markets like china and India because it's cheap and it introduces consumers to the apple ecosystem.
Do you really think so? It’s dead on arrival imho. There are to many cheaper phones in China, India with even better specs. It won’t sell. Too late.

Agreed. It's a low cost solution for those who either don't want to spend a lot on this for kids, or who can't afford it. Neither group likely have bluetooth headphones.

Someone mentioned it having a software SIM, which could be turned on and off like data service for an iPad on a monthly basis. That's not a bad idea, which Apple could be prepping for with the carriers. That way, unlike current pre-paid sims, a person doesn't have to worry about losing their number, they have an Apple ID which allows them to be contacted through Messages, whether the SIM is active or not. There are plenty of other apps that could bridge the link between Android messaging, as well as social media apps most kids are using, not to mention provide access to Apple Music and cloud services.

Ultimately it's a data only device which is quickly becoming the most common way kids communicate, and a necessity for streaming music. VOIP is also a possibility with such a device through such apps. But it's mainly a communication device for families and friends all on the same Apple platform.

Also, since USB-C Power Delivery is rated to deliver 100 watts of power, being able to block out unapproved cables is a really good thing. Sure, we’d all LOVE for this to be about consumer choice, but there are those among us that want to buy dirt cheap cables (to go with our $500 phones?) AND want someone else to pay if it burns down their house.

Is the lack of innovation so bad at Apple that they need to release an obsolete product like the iPOD?

What is next, a new revamp of the old egg shapped iMacs in new colors??

What a joke...

Apple said, switch to USB-C for all your MacBook Pro connections 2 years ago to me. SO how come my iPhone XS Max has "legacy" ports. I love how Apple can in one sentence call all other connections legacy but they are still very much part of their flagship products in another category. I only buy USB-C connected devices, yet Apple forces me into dongles for my iPhone lol what a joke and no wonder they are having so many problems..

Agreed. Even when the iPhone SE launched, that even pushed the iPod further into the darkness. The SE essentially is a 4 inch phone that had cellular and all the capabilities of the iPod. I just don’t see the investment for the iPod anymore for Apple, not when smart phones are the primary as you mentioned, and for what Apple charges for an iPod touch for a higher storage, you can find an iPhone for that price in good condition and have cellular if needed.

I’m completely open for the idea to Apple updating the iPod, I just don’t see the market for it as it once was, as it’s been so long already since its last refresh, does the consumer really care about a product like this when they’re smart phone meet all those expectations? And then factor the Apple Watch can now stream music directly to the AirPods as well, which the iOS was popular acting as a second device for streaming music.

If the iPod Touch was $99 for a 64gb model, then it wouldn’t be so bad.

That liability is currently abated with explicit cautions and waivers against using uncertified power accessories. However, as a compromise, the standard should be universal and certifiable through a third party. Apple doesn’t need to own the process.

How dare apple give people options...

Options of old stuff? How about some new innovation for a change ;-)

If the engineers are so bad and out of ideas that they are bringing back and obsolete product Apple's future is looking really bad.

Add a free 3g/4g connection to Apple Music similar to how some of the Amazon Kindle's have a free 3g connection to the Amazon book store cloud.

Just because older products don’t have it doesn’t mean newer products won’t. You can even buy Apple Watch charger from apple with USB C.

I can see air power coming with USB C and new air pods coming with the same.
The watch "puck" you're talking about has a Type C plug on power supply side. The Watch Dock has a Lightning port, and I might even be willing to place a bet that AirPower has a Lightning port as well. I think the new wireless charging AirPods case has already been shown to retain the Lightning port.

We'll see. My take:
  • All devices that are designated power source only or dual role and/or mainly act as USB host get USB Type C (optionally Thunderbolt 3). Examples: Power Adapter, Mac, (iPad)
  • All devices that usually are power sink and/or USB client get/retain Lightning. Examples: Siri Remote, AirPods Case, beats Headphones, Apple-branded non-Thunderbolt Mac accessories, charging stations, iPhone, (iPad)
