Having an 8GB 5s is like having a sports car with a motorcycle-size gas tank.

Then again, I always see Apple's strategy as upselling. Releasing an 8GB iPhone imo is more to entice people to think that the higher capacity iPhones to be the better value, and buy them instead. Apple's margin is higher on the higher capacity models than on the lower ones.

I really wonder what the manufacturing cost difference is between 8, 16, 32, 64 GB devices for Apple. It's probably measured in cents.

No. Think of it like Macbook Air. They lowered the price by 200 within the last year (2 dif models) but it's the same machine.

Nope, they replaced the ssd with a slower version... You think you're getting a better deal while Apply sneaks in a slower ssd...

The first iPhone came in 4gb... not 8.

Nope. First one that came out came in 4 and 8 GB models. Only a few months later the 4 GB model was dropped, the 8 GB model had a huge price cut. And only 6 months later, they came out with a 16 GB model of the original iPhone.

Think about the fact that June 29, 2007 is the first day Apple started selling the 8 GB iPhone. And they're still peddling that size in some markets today.

They'd better not.

With 170 Billion dollars in cash laying around, to do anything, build anything they can imagine, if this is what they have to announce they've done with it, I'm cashing out.

I'd sooner leave my money to my nephew in Nigeria.

& then send him on a wild goose chase to try and find someone to help him transfer it to his bank.

At least it'd be entertaining.

Why would Apple do an iPhone 5S with only 8GB of memory? That would make it have only about 4GB for everything else. If Apple included an micro SD card slot then it makes a lot of sense but without that; it kind of worthless device at 8GB.

Offering an 8GB 5S is tantamount to acknowledging the 5C being a total failure. At the price point they're selling it it should've come with the 5S internals minus the fingerprint reader and aluminium. I would've considered getting one if it came with the 5S camera, I really like the design, but now all they have is a crippled device nobody wants.

Unless data is unlimited and we can live off streaming and the cloud 8gigs ain't going to cut it.

It was proven that it was the difference in SSD manufacturer that caused the differences in speed. It was not intentional.

I have an 8 gig iphone 4. Yeah it's close to nothing. I'm constantly doing restores from icloud becuase some how that brings back back about a gig

And iPhones & iPads don't supported expanded SD storage yet... why? A factory condition 8GB iPhone is gonna have like what, one gigabyte of free space after the OS is installed and updated on it? Unless you're one of the users whose device has a persistent memory leak, then lol.

8gb a really bad move from Apple, they are really stubborn n tight at times. I'm not sure if they use their iPhones apart from looking at the screen. My little daughter 8gb iPhone 4 is almost finish. iPhones doesn't have a storage card facility like the Samsung so they need to realise they need to replace their 16gb starting model with 32gb etc.

Agreed, the beefed up internals would be more suited to the current price point. Still I think the 5C isn't a bad installment in the iPhone family, but the current offering just should not cost what Apple has been selling it for. It flopped for no other reason than that they overestimated its value to potential customers and marked it up way too damn high. It should have been "the cheap iPhone", and they didn't sell it that way.

8GB is barely enough to hold the OS and 5 of the most popular apps. Time to go 16/64/128 Apple. It costs them pennies to add that much storage. Having an 8GB phone these days is just insulting.

I don't buy it for a slightly different reason. To 5s is the 'luxury' model" with that slo mo video etc it just isn't suited for going basic.

Folks that only need 8gb are the crew that would find a $0 on contract phone appealing.

So I think they will drop the whole 'keep the old model' and go for a C and S combo with the C going down to 8GB while the S stays at 16 or even goes to 32 as the base

Yep and without a micro SD card, it sucks for the end users. The new windows phone 8.1 has shown that even by using a class 4 card, they can keep performance on even a low end windoss phone snappy.
