My high end 2010 model is still running smooth. I'll probably shell out in 3-4 years when they finally put an SSD in there by default.

Not sure if I should hold out for the revision. My 2012 Retina MBP had issues with image retention. Eventually it got bad enough that Apple replaced it. Furthermore, my late 2012 work iMac exhibits some image retention as well. The other thing is that it seems like it's barely capable of running that screen sometimes. The UI can get fairly laggy—especially when switching spaces. I worry about this iMac being able to push such a high-resolution display at a reasonable performance level with only two years of advancement in graphics (although it is a desktop).

Well, I'm sure if Apple does announce a Retina Imac next month, a retina Cinema Display will also be announced. So you can always get that plus a new MacBook Pro. That way...when you update again to broadwell MacBook in the future, at least you'll already have a huge retina Cinema Display.

The report's sources suggest the move to Retina will be limited to the larger 27-inch iMac at this time, with the 21.5-inch model continuing to use the current 1920 x 1080 display.

That's disappointing. I prefer the smaller display size, but I really want Retina :(

This renews my hope for a new, slim Apple Cinema Display.

Though I worry that my late 2013 rMBP (with dedicated gfx) doesn't have enough gfx-power to run a 27 inch retina display, so in a way I am (also) hoping for a retina ACD at 21.5 inches.

I hope ASAP ALL :apple: products will be
1) retina-only
2) SSD-only.

It's time to let the past go. Apple should lead this.

PS - also I want Touch ID on Macs, or at least some iPhone proximity solution.

But what about a retina Mac mini?! I mean, a Mac mini with just enough graphics oomph to power a 4K/5K thunderbolt display? Is that what Apple is waiting for?

No.

----------

I wonder if you can return it within 14 days like the phones? (only if you really must have 5k...of course).

If you're working with 5k you need a 5k video monitor, not s 5k computer monitor.

I'm not sure what the target audience for such an AIO will be. The current 27" iMac is already too expensive for most individuals and companies don't buy AIOs (in general) because they're not economic.

Given Apple's current price policy I expect such a device to start somewhere above 2.5k$, a price that only few people will be willing to pay for a desktop computer.

I know everyone's gaga for "retina" displays, but I really hope that IF this is true I can still get a new NON-retina 27".

For editing at the pixel level, retina is wonky and Apple's display prefs suck. I want the old option back to scale the display based on actual physical pixel resolutions, not "A little bigger/smaller please".

I'd set yourself up with a solution that will last a while (they'll probably still have the 27 regular for this new generation)...but the trend is clear and long term I'd expect the entire line to switch over...

Then of course, a year or two after everything is switched over - the new OS releases will only install on Retina Macs.

Am I the only one who thinks this isn't a good idea? Cramming double the resolution into the same size screen? My eyes aren't getting any younger, and while I can increase the font size etc. why should I have to?

At a certain point such high resolutions don't make sense without a corresponding increase in monitor size.

You really don't understand how Apple (or PC's for that matter) handle "retina" displays do you? They double the pixels so that text is EXTREMELY crisp, but the text stays the same size as it always has (as well as icons and what not). You don't get anymore "desktop" space, just everything looks so much more crisp.

Switching to AMD graphics as soon as nVidia releases extremely efficient 900m series??
Either the rumor source is idiotic or Apple is..

Probably signed a deal with AMD to get a good price on the AMD in mac pro.

Let's hope these new iMacs don't bend.

Seriously though - I'm still struggling on with my 2008 24" iMac, and have been waiting to pull the trigger to get a new one. So nearly tempted by the first thin versions a couple of years ago, but finances didn't align. But a 5k machine is a different matter, and I'm ready n waiting to hit BUY!

Am hoping it could be used as an external monitor for my 2012 MBr. But I suspect that won't be possible - at least not at decent frame rates.

Yes please. Now to find out how much I'll get for my 15" rMBP...

I'm so used to my 15" rMBP, I don't know if I could go back to an iMac. I wanted to get a Mac mini just to have around, but with no Apple retina displays out there, I never did. I wish Apple would make a 24" retina iMac. 27" is too big for my space. For me, 24" is the perfect size so I don't have to move my eyes to much or my head.
