Couple of thoughts.

Holy cow, I've been wanting this since the 4S came out!

The price could go up or the price may already be built in. When the 24 first hit, it was in line with or cheaper than other options because the display was on the cutting edge. Over time, the tech went mass market and the iMac price didn't fall with the value. Retina boosts the value back up. If they can manage to hold the price even close to current (under 2500), these will be stupid popular.

With the crossover HTPC market, a 4/5k mini makes a lot of sense. Hook it right up to a 4k TV. If they release a compatible Cinema Display at the same time, it will serve both markets well and would make a fun alternative to the iMac. If such a display can also connect to the iMac, wow.

Intels delays are really sucking the fun out of this year. Apple is having to punt product after product. But perhaps it will inspire a little mutiny. In any case, 2015 will be an interesting year!

Price?!

I doubt that this rumor is true and here is why: price. Pure and simple. The Dell UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K will sell for $ 2,499. Now that's $ 500 more than the current 27" top of the line iMac. Could anyone imagine an iMac selling well above $ 3,000? Or am I getting something completely wrong here?

We can hope... I wonder why they are switching to AMD now. I know they have had it before on the iMac but now it has Nvidia and the Mac Pro also got AMD.

Doubtful

Currently 5K displays, especially 27"+ are selling, alone, for at least $2000. I can't see even Apple adding a $2000 premium option to the iMac line, which are SUPPOSED to be Apple's entry level gateway drug for Macs since they have invested ZERO dollars into the Mac Mini product in over 2 years. Who want's a $4000+ iMac? Also that is $2000 before Apple's rip off margin factor.

Unless Apple found some supplier of ultra cheap 5k 27" panels, I doubt this rumor to hold any merit.

If Apple releases a 5k 27" iMac for under $3000, I would be highly skeptical of the quality of the display, or at least the components in the iMac.

Just in Case.....

And KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects new iMac to lack sapphire screens

If you look at it this way - the difference for the iMac Vs Dell Display would be just the panel and not an entire display. And Apple might be able to get those panels cheaper than Dell.

For instance, the current iMac is also a 27" Thunderbolt Display which by itself sell for about $1000. So the rest of the iMac is about $800. That's a powerful 4 core Apple computer for $800. Combing the two lowers the cost dramatically.

That said, it could be they'll sell a Retina version for a couple or few hundred more than non-retina.

Well at least now I know I can just snag a 21.5 inch whenever since the retina won't be on it for a while. I wonder if I should wait till end of October tho to see if there's any kind of Haswell speed bump or 16gb default ram as a perk.

I'm super excited!!!

I'm super excited!!!....to see what the price drop of current iMacs would be!

5k 27" is too much for me. The current resolution on 27" is perfect for me.

Good news, but I really wasn't expecting one until late 2015. This is a major feature that would warrant an upgrade, but I have the late 2012 model. And the processors and graphics in this new model are not going to be all that different.

Even though I would want to, I likely will wait out for the 2nd generation like I did with the Retina laptops.

I really was hoping not to upgrade my iMac again until a 6-Core version was available, but that may not occur until Skylake (at the earliest). We shall see what else is offered. The only thing that would sway my mind was if I got a large amount on the resale of my current model.

Also will be interesting to see if they redesign the case again and make it even slimmer.

Yessss!!! that would mean 27" retina thunderbolt display!!

I sure hope so... but driving an external display requires things differently than an internal display. It requires Thunderbolt 3, not out yet, but could be out next month in new MBPs. I think the current Mac Pro can drive it though.

But what Apple has to consider is that there are very few Mac owners that can use the display and they have to deal with the issue of people buying the new display and returning it ticked off it doesn't work with their mid-2014 MBP.

I hope they have a way on their website to "check compatibility" where the buyer must put in what computer they intend to use it with and if the one they put in isn't compatible, they grey out the "buy now" button and explicitly inform the buyer it won't work. And, instruct the store employees to discuss this.

Retina is 5K... I wonder if Apple would be tempted to make the Display 4K to increase compatibility.

This is exactly what I was thinking.
How are they going to price this beast and still stay in the realm of even their niche market.
Who is gonna pay that much for a AIO!?

Just curious,

For all the people excited and planning on getting this would you still plan on upgrading if the price was $4,000 or more? I'm with a few others around here who have a hard time seeing this come in at what most people would consider reasonable pricing.

Hopefully though even if it does come out at that type of a price it means in a couple of years we will see one in a more realistic upgrade price range.

28" 4K monitors from Acer are only $800. With Apple's purchasing power, I think they can get the cost of a fully tricked out 27" Retina iMac to be in the $2999 price range. :D

Is there any AMD GPU that can handle single display resolution at 5K?

Ill answer: no. ONLY the Maxwell v 2.0 can support this resolution. Even GM107 in GTX850/860M cannot.

AMD Fiji, that can handle that resolution will come in few months, which means - next year.

Does it really have to be single display? Hasn't someone figured out how to make display joining work well?

I'll wait for Rev B with Broadwell chipset. My mid-2010 is getting long in the tooth but I'd prefer to wait for the significant bump. The bigger news here IMO is the probable 5K Thunderbolt Display.

In exactly the same boat. I'd wait if rev B came sooner than a year later, but if I need to wait until fall 2015 for this 5K monitor, then I just might take it and run.
