CAN WE JUST GET IOS TO WORK BEFORE THEY CREATE A 4TH OS!
It’s a different team. It’s not like the engineers working on this project would be fixing bugs in iOS if the project didn’t exist. Why don’t people understand this?

You might as well say, can’t the food in the cafeteria just be better before the sales people sell more products? It makes just as much sense, because they’re just as completely unrelated to each other.

It would be funny to have to upgrade my glasses every year. My last upgrade was 4 years ago.

Glasses upgrade program :)

As a man wearing glasses I'm not sure I'd buy a pair capable of AR. I don't like contact lenses, so either I wear glasses to see reality, or I wear the ones with only the augmented part :D
But I'm interested in AR, I'll make some apps related to that next year and I'll be happy to port them on AR glasses in the future

I think this will be the future. If powerful enough, you could replace your phone, your mac and your TV, because you could just project screens everywhere.

It all depends on the UI though. Maybe at some point even neural (it's already on the head anyway)

I don't SEE it... seriously. There might be some niche uses, and it might become something amazing in 12 years, but at this time I can't imagine the software guys will make it work optimally. Apple is suffering Microsoftitis: an inflammation of self importance and a slowdown in all parts of the body, usually accompanied by bouts of ridiculous code and complicated infrastructure.

Hey, Tim, do you already have a name? What about iSee ??
iSpy?

Wonder if they are using a nice high end Windows PC to power the Vive they are running tests with?

Goodness me, think of how slow gen 1 would get and how many pairs of glasses you would need because the rOS would keep slowing down.

Having said that, if anyone can do this well it would be Apple (noticed I didn't say do it perfectly, given all the bugs of the latest batch of mac/watch/i OS releases.

I love pretty much everything Apple, but I cannot see society accepting people walking around with always on cameras right on their faces. It's a dystopian reality that either all (or most) accept and jump in together to or the resistance will be through the roof.

Furthermore, how many more electronics must we keep on ourselves daily, maintain and charge, to achieve this apparent idealistic technological view? I know that things like wireless charging and the AirPower are fundamental pillars to this future, where we just drop our stuff somewhere and it gets charged without us giving much about it. Taking charging out of the way.

But there's more. I have an Apple Watch and I love it. But sometimes I want to take it out and I feel anxious that I will miss my notifications, it will not track my steps or my activity or my heartbeat. The same goes for when I look at another watch that I'd like to use instead for a while.

At the risk of sounding like an old man afraid of change, we're becoming a bit hostages of technology, and I can easily see a movement of people just shedding their crap away to feel free again in the future. Well, maybe keeping an iPhone in the pocket just in case.

Doubt it.

The point of AR is that it enhances your vision by adding stuff to what you see, not replacing it together (which is more along the line of VR). Looking at the Apple Watch, we will likely have to temper our expectations as well. It's still going to be a nice accessory with some cool benefits.

Basically, I am guessing that people will soon realise that the utility of AR is kinda hampered by the need to keep holding your phone, so the glasses essentially bring AR to you 24/7. Maybe a display which can continuously translate a foreign language for you in real-time? I am clearly not imaginative enough to come up with more "power uses".

I have almost no interest in using these, though I find the technology fascinating. Playing games with them? Sure. Walking around with glasses that constantly add stuff to my line of sight? Nope.

There’s literally nothing in this article that supports this statement. Self-important? Ridiculous code? Complicated infrastructure? Where does that even come from? You’re projecting a bunch of crap onto this that’s not there.

Apple is currently spending 5% of revenue on R&D. Almost a billion dollars per month. That’s how smart companies innovate and produce great products in the future. Would you have them cut back on R&D? Stop pursuing AR/VR? How would that help achieve their goals?

The ARKit team has already done some great work, and I can’t wait to see what they do over the next 5 years. For sure, Apple won’t release it until they think they’ve got a compelling product.

Isn't that already the new trend, called Mixed Reality?

If Samsung is working on foldable displays, it's gimmicky. If Google and Microsoft had already shown us AR wear, it's useless. If Apple is doing it, it's going be amazing.

I tried liking VR and it's not what I expected. Big letdown. Not what I dreamed in the 1990's. I like lying down on my bed but I have to sit up and watch it while strapping giant goggles over my head.

Only used my Samsung Gear VR a few times. Still have it but stored in my closet inside its box. Have no interest in PlayStation VR the same way I had no interest in 3D gaming. AR and VR are related. The novelty will wear off like Pokémon Go.

Google Glass was banned in many places including casinos thanks to the camera. Became vaporware that never was commercially available. Microsoft HoloLens hasn't changed the world and its been around since 2014.

At least it's something different Apple is working on because the next revolution will NOT happen in smartphones and the 20th iPhone. We maxed out in wow factor.

What I want to see is the Cicret Bracelet happen. That looks more useful than smart watches. Or something cool like space travel. Again, something different than just relying and continuing to milk the iPhone.

In ten years, people will lose interest in smartphones, grow tired of its planned obsolescence, and want the next big thing in tech.

Nice to see they're working on this - hopefully its a project that pans out for them / us...but definitely the tech doesn't seem to be close to there today.

I'd like to hear they're working on VR as well...as I finally saw the use case where people will actively pay money to utilize it (basically video hologram memories of your kids - baby through whenever - and older relatives): https://www.theverge.com/2017/11/7/...emories-holograms-8i-actress-shoah-foundation
And, regarding VR, I don't want VR's future consigned to be trapped in the strip mine your personal details that is Facebook (they own Oculus) and its lacking in moral integrity CEO Mark Zuckerberg who are pouring money into VR to push others out of the marketplace...
