Apple leaked details of this product in iOS 11.1. It's not AR glasses, it's an AR monocle. When they finally get this to release, the emoji will smile.

Reminds me of The Terminator. He would see a display telling him all about the target he was going after. I wouldn’t mind a less psychopathic version of normal looking AR glasses that could help me keep track of people. I have to do meet and greets in a volunteer position. When I was young it was not a problem at all to memorize 50 people a week at a job I once had. Now, it’s more challenging and it would be cool to blink, take a pic, enter them into a database of names and basic info to supplement my middle aged memory. However, that’s also extremely creepy and I’d feel weird knowing someone was doing that while meeting me, so it’s one of those things I file under “be careful what you wish for” category.

Isn't that already the new trend, called Mixed Reality?
Yes and no.

It's easy to say "Hey, something like this already exists (in the form of a bulky headset which only works under very controlled environments with very limited functionality)."

Success ultimately hinges on the effectiveness of the implementation, and I am of the opinion that Apple will likely be the only company who can get it to work. They control the hardware and the software, control the best customers courtesy of the iPhone, have the branding power, and the design chops to make a pair of wearables which people will actually be open to trying.

You will also want day long battery life and the ability to miniaturise this all into a tiny pair of spectacles which won't look out of place in society. Apple's experience with the AirPods will pay handsome dividends here.

Face ID will eventually let you control your smartphone with gestures and glances, and makes sense as the interface for a pair of glasses which won’t have buttons or any sort.

I would say that Apple Glasses is pretty much inevitable at this point.

It's a damn shame, but the puck seems to be drifting away from those devices...
Well, it has been said that Apple skates to where the puck will be, not where it has been, and the Mac mini is pretty much a has-been at this point. It's a solid computer still, but doesn't seem like it has much of a place in Apple's future.

There are so many technologies that I wish only I had...

There's a whole class of tech I'd file as "useful to my commute", but only if no one could reciprocate.

Or sue...

I remember watching Jay Leno interviewing a bunch of people on the street and the question was asking what's the greatest invention ever? Some old guy said Viagara! This was like the late-1990's around the Internet boom and after they cloned a sheep named Dolly.

You know what I would rather have? An IMMORTALITY PILL. A pill that can cure every disease like cancer and we can live long like Logan. Rather have a long life than another toy. I was watching LOST's "Ab Aeterno" last night. My 2nd favorite LOST episode behind "The Constant." Made me think about wanting to live forever like Richard Alpert.

Immortality pill. The pill to cure every disease and push us to live beyond centurions. This is why Samsung being in the medical field fascinates me. Aerospace, medicine, they go beyond just tech (aka toys for adults).

And robocop

It would be funny to have to upgrade my glasses every year. My last upgrade was 4 years ago.
What's also funny is how Apple champions itself on being green, yet it makes so many "disposable" products. Expecting to buy a totally new device every 1-2 years. And yes, I know Apple is a for-profit business.

CAN WE JUST GET IOS TO WORK BEFORE THEY CREATE A 4TH OS!

You mean a 5th OS. Apple already has macOS, iOS, tvOS, and watchOS. :eyeroll:

I can see those in special business cases, but not for everyday use. Nobody wants a camera shoved in their face all the time, neither Google's nor Apple's.

With that camera, necessary for AR, hopefully this Apple device will be banned from stores, museums, restaurants, pubs and other such places.

Doubt it.

The point of AR is that it enhances your vision by adding stuff to what you see, not replacing it together (which is more along the line of VR). Looking at the Apple Watch, we will likely have to temper our expectations as well. It's still going to be a nice accessory with some cool benefits.

Basically, I am guessing that people will soon realise that the utility of AR is kinda hampered by the need to keep holding your phone, so the glasses essentially bring AR to you 24/7. Maybe a display which can continuously translate a foreign language for you in real-time? I am clearly not imaginative enough to come up with more "power uses".

What about this?

Microsoft already envisioned this. But where they lack, and most other companies lack, is making a simple UI everyone understands. This is where Apple shines. So i'm hopeful.

And of course it needs to be really light and not big and clunky like the HoloLens. That's probably why Tim said the tech is not ready yet.

Yey - more stuff I don't need!

It's much better for my wallet that Apple is not making compelling Macs (Macbook Pro) and instead concentrating on Watches, Glasses, TVs, Home Speakers - all stuff I have zero interest in.

Just more stuff for the masses to get into debt/ become slaves to their jobs...

Apple is ramping up development of an augmented reality headset that will have its own display and run on a new chip and operating system, according to well-connected Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman.

Apple aims to have technology ready for the headset by 2019, and could ship a product as early as 2020, the report claims. But the development timeline is said to be "very aggressive" and could still change.

The headset's custom operating system, based on iOS, is reportedly dubbed "rOS" for "reality operating system."Apple hasn't finalized how users will control the headset and launch apps, but it is investigating touchscreens, Siri voice activation, and head gestures as it creates prototypes, according to the report.Apple software engineers are said to be using HTC Vive headsets, while working on a device similar to an Oculus Gear VR headset that uses an iPhone's display and other hardware, both for internal testing purposes only.

An augmented reality headset is one of several hardware and software projects that a team of Apple software engineers are supposedly working on under the umbrella code name of "T288" in Cupertino and Sunnyvale.

The same team was behind ARKit, which provides developers with tools to create augmented reality apps for iPhones and iPads.

Gurman previously reported that Apple was considering a pair of smart glasses that would connect wirelessly to an iPhone, much like the Apple Watch, and display "images and other information" to the wearer.

The Financial Times has also reported about Apple experimenting with "several different kinds" of wearable augmented reality prototypes, as it tries to figure out the "most compelling application" for a headset.

Apple CEO Tim Cook alluded to any headset being at least a few years away during a recent interview about augmented reality.

"Today I can tell you that the technology itself doesn't exist to do that in a quality way," Cook said. "We don't give a rats about being first, we want to be best in creating people's experiences. Something that you would see out in the market any time soon would not be something that any of us would be satisfied with."

2020?
Means it's all speculation and they have no eff'n clue.
