I remember the first iPhone with the recessed headphone jack. Most headphones didn't fit, so people had to buy adapters. This is how Apple (Steve) reacted back in 2008 (jump to 4:30):

Makes sense. So iOS 10 will support this via lightening connector. I guess iOS10 will not be both 64bit and 32bit hence supporting all phones after iPhone 5 and also increasing sales of Headphones. Now these headphones will draw current hence battery life on 4inch models will reduce -- a reason to upgrade. With iOS 11 they may go all 64bit and drop support till 5c.

I have an iPhone 6, and that is already a very thin device to start with.

The best solution for Apple is to keep something very close to the current iPhone 6/6+ case design, but get rid of the physical Home button (now possible with the next generation of touchscreen technology about to enter production) and go to a new generation of lithium-ion battery types. This means no need to get rid of the 3.5" headphone jack and Apple could nearly double the usable time per charge on the phone, and there will be no sacrifice for increased thickness, too.

In fact, I really think the 2016 model iPhone will look very much like the current model, but with the improvements I suggested. After all, when Apple unveiled the iPhone 5 in 2012, it was essentially the case technology of the iPhone 4/4s but with a metal back and larger physical size to accommodate the larger display.

By the way, Apple has shown they can make devices quite thin without sacrificing the 3.5 mm headphone jack--look at the current iPod touch and iPod nano models.

Was really hoping Jony was packing his bags and on his way back to England.
Unfortunately that's not happening.
Guess when Timmy-Boy gave him the new title recently ( I think it was Master of the Universe or something) he decided to stay on despite his suffering from Thin-sickness.
That's a condition where you must make everything around you thinner (except your own God-damned belly).
Please disappear Jony.

A proprietary connector... for EARPHONES. What about if I wanted to use my earphones on another device or a non-Apple device?

Utter stupidity.

Buy a cheap set for other devices. You can buy earphones for about $7 on Amazon (Panasonic) that sound better than Apple's. It's not hard or expensive. Or, buy bluetooth headphones for $15 or less. I got a set a few weeks ago from Amazon for $12 that work and sound well (better than the ear pods).

I'd love a thinner iPhone. I keep mine in a case and so thinness matters.

Since when is headphones with a wired 3.5mm jack old technology that needs replaced? Just because it's been around for decades? I don't want Bluetooth headphones, just another device that needs charged, and using them drains your phone even faster. I don't want proprietary wired headphones either. Even with a 3.5mm adapter, are we going to have to choose between being able to listen or charging? Oops, my phones battery is almost dead, I guess I can't listen to music with my wired headphones for the next couple hours till my phone charges...stupid!

Apple May Replace 3.5mm Headphone Jack on iPhone 7 With All-in-One Lightning Connector

That way we can get iPod touch thin iPhones. But do we really need them?

boy, nothing brings out the trolls and haters on MR like change does. it's almost like they don't know which company it is they're complaining about. Apple routinely makes their devices thinner. it's what made the iPad Pro even possible.

So I usually read these threads and don't participate much, but this time I feel compelled. I read the first 4 pages and the last pages, so apologies in advance if this has been said before.
I'm all fine with the current level of "thinness", no need to go any thinner - keep it the same and give me more battery life as the internals shrink. What I'm not OK with is holes in my iPhone. You know - the things that let water and dirt in, and found surrounded by scratch marks where the connectors go in and out. I'm beside myself with amazement that in 2015 a $750 piece of tech is an instant brick when it falls in water. All holes need to die!
The technology exists already to inductively charge the phone, and your headsets and many other things. They will admittedly take longer to charge, but the advancement of technology will make that much better. You could have the equivalent of a small connector that functions similar to a magsafe connector for most things that require energy to run (if local battery usage is impractical). WiFi or cellular syncing is doable and constantly getting better. The energy loss in the phone transferring power to earphones will mean a hit in the maximum duration for music-only listening, but if the thinness is maintained the extra battery you get would compensate. The main drain in a phone is still all the radio/WiFi/communications related stuff. You can still keep your 3.5mm equipped headphones, but you would need one (inductively coupled) adapter to compensate. Full disclosure - I'm an electronics engineer that works for a company that has been known to supply components to Apple from time time time, although the topic of this thread has nothing to do with any existing or future products that I know of.
I want my next iPhone to be a fully sealed, waterproof, dust proof, goof proof and forgiving appliance. I'm so done with treating my phone like a newborn baby every time I go to use it. Anyway, it's probably time for my bashing now (which is why I usually never participate in these threads)...

Amazing why some people are so surprised and shocked by Apple doing weird things like removing or changing ports. They have been doing it for decades so theres no reason why they would stop now.

I can deal with adaptors because the positives of the iPhone still outweigh the negatives for me.

Yes. I would prefer slightly thicker with a larger battery.

The technology exists to make waterproof sockets, the reason they are not is Apple chose not to

The removal of all the sockets means more adaptor junk to carry, overall size goes up

Wonder how much the camera will protruding on that iPhone. Then again maybe pompous Jony and the greed-meister Timmy will make the camera unapologetically separate from the rest of the iPhone.
Shouldn't be an issue; with the new 3 mm thick iPhone you'd be walking around with a bag full of dongles, adapters, and cables anyway (each available at $19.99 to $69.99).
The fanboys will lap it up as an ingenious move on Apple's part.
Magical, even.

Tnx for the video, now i remember that back in the day (2008) you could get top of the line iPhone 3G (16GB) for $299...

Back to topic -
How exactly i will charge my phone while im listening to music ? hopefully they will bring wireless charging for the next version, coz the music quality via wifi or bluetooth is crap.
im sure, if this will happen, we will have to buy (no chance they will give us for free) new adapter or dock for the "old tech" we having (headphones, receivers...) if we want to continue using them...
