Who the bloody hell wants to carry an adaptor around just to listen to music? Another thing to loose, another expense, a pointless transition away from a standard port.

Dropping the headphone port would have to be one of the stupidest ideas ever. Not only would this be a very poor move in environmentally, but an expensive and pointless one. The iPhone is more than thin enough at the moment, so why not offer people the choice of a 3.5 mm jack and bluetooth headphones and lightning headphones?

Bluetooth headphones are just another bloody thing to keep charge and another drain on the iPhone's already semi dismal battery life.

I hope this remains a rumour.
You make it sound like an Ikea package.

You don't have to "carry it around" at all, I would imagine the adaptor will be well designed and discreet and will simply live attached to the 3.5mm jack on your headphones.

Picked up your headphones to take out with you?

Great, you just took the adaptor with you too.

Plug them in and enjoy whatever it was you wanted to listen to.

Would make sense if they're going to be waterproofing their phones. One less hole for water to get in.

Wireless headphones and charging would also make it less of an issue.

They make it very hard to feel too excited about their products these days.

This is how I see it:

Using technology is a pile of crap. I know how to use it well, to the point that I see flaws is most everything I use.

The best experience I've had was in the past using Apple stuff, it felt like we were floating above the steaming pile of crap that is using technology.

Now, Apple's still the best, but they aren't floating, instead we're just sitting on top of the pile. So it's the least crap experience, but it's not what it was, or what it can be.

Plenty of cars only have an aux 3.5 port...

I've gotten so tired of stuffing around with bluetooth in the car I've gone back to just plugging in. Simple, easy, don't have to remember to turn bluetooth on the phone on/off.
It's unlikely to be a design of the car itself, more likely to be a design of the head unit.

Simple answer if you want to use 2016 technology in a 2006 car? Get a head unit that has bluetooth and a USB socket, so that you can listen over bluetooth and charge at the same time.

Things move on, I can't believe people are upset about this.

You're being ridiculous and just exaggerating to (try and) prove your point.

The adaptor won't be anything like that and will simply be a small adaptor that will live permanently attached to the 3.5mm jack on your headphones.

The need for adapters like the one I showed is ridiculous... Of course the one that would be needed for headphones wouldn't look like that, did I say something like that? And guess what's even more ridiculous? Ignoring actual customer demand for more battery life (for years) instead of thinner iPhones. Look it up, fanboy.

Perhaps apple just needs to make the earbuds packed with iPhone Bluetooth enabled and charge via the lightening port( like the apple pencil) just in case you run out of juice while listening to your music.

Yep thats a great idea! A lovely adapter that can snap because I leave plugged in all the time. Funny thing is I use three sets of headphones and multiple aux cables. Ca ching, more freaking adaptors for me. Then when I want to use the said cables and headphones with other devices, you have to unplug the adaptor. Bye bye small adaptor.

Its another thing to loose and and an unnecessary expense. Oh and not to mention loosing the ability to charge and listen to music (something I often do)... Thumbs up Apple.. Thumbs up. /s.

And for what advantage? No advantage whatsoever. Ooo lets make everything more difficult, complex and expensive for the sake of a few mm off the already thin iPhone. The iPhone is thin enough. I know so many people who are sick of the iPhone getting thinner, when other things could be improved.

Bluetooth is freaking annoying in my car. Its 10 times simpler just to plug a cable in then having to turn on bluetooth, have it not connect sometimes and the turn it off afterwards. Bluetooth is a battery chewer, and the connection is often dodgy.

Ad Hominem attacks now?

That always goes a long way to making your point more valid.

Get a better head unit.

Nothing wrong with my head unit. Got no intention of ruining the ease of use of the standard one with a 3rd party one when it does not provide any benefit. Again, plugging in a cable is so easy and a new head unit does not automatically turn bluetooth on and off.

So Apples mantra of 'Think Different' has now turned into 'Think Stupid' because they've run out of ideas?
Fine, let's watch those iPhone sales drop if they do this and then Apples share plummet as a result.

I can't think of anything more stupid then removing the world standard headphone jack from a music centric device. And knowing Apple they WILL charge for any adapter to let you use normal headphones if they make one, or they will force you to use Beats headphones no doubt with the connector built in or wireless.

Did we all forget Apple owns Beats Audio?

Professional Macrumors whiners in full outrage today!

They don't need an high quality, modern headphones connection, it seems, not to mention that once you start using wireless headphones the old ones look like dinosaurs.

Not according to the article, which states the new connector "have a DAC, or digital-to-audio converter, for backwards compatibility with wired headphones using standard 3.5mm stereo jacks."
Digital to analog.

still, you can't charge it and use the port at the same time, unless you have a new devices, or an adapter/breakout.

Apple... don't mess with my ports...

I don't mind USB-C only because there is not that much around that at the moment, its not like everyone has USB-C products.... but i do mind when a 3.5mm jack we use everywhere, on everything..

this is just a way to get everyone to buy new headphones and lightening-equipped (more expensive) gadgets.. while the few would use the dongle we must now get...

Keep it simple...... nothing is ever 'plug-in & go'' anymore... Now its all... like putting lego pieces. together...

As much as i like the Lego movie, i don't really want it in reality too.

Umm no one here is asking for Apple to not introduce the ability to have high quality audio over lighting or bluetooth headphones.. if you want that go ahead and buy the headphones/earphones you want!

We're just asking for Apple to not remove a very helpful port.

I'm trying to understand the benefits of this. Other than thinness I don't get it?
With the thinness you lose the durability of something like a headphone jack, it's universal appeal and it's compatibility.

The only thing you can get from a powered/digital speaker (which is all headphones are) is maybe power to
power noise cancelling and moving the AD conversion stage to to the headphones. So you could feasibly put a better convertor in your headphones and theoretically if you spent more dough on headphones they could sound better.

But the elephant in the room is that most people over 20 have poor hearing. It declines with age and especially after spending half your life listening to music in clubs etc.. The sound wars are over. You just can't get meaningfully better sound beyond what is out there. Just like beyond 4k and your starting to get to the point where our vision is the blocking factor, our hearing isn't going to improve.

I think this is a non story.
maybe they'll have two lightening ports now and a headphone port and give the option for digital connections for sound. But getting rid of the headphone jack??

And if you wanted to make it smaller there are mini jack ports available so they could use that. It doesn't make sense really.

No it wouldn't, Sony have more then managed to make fully waterproof and dust proof open headphone and USB ports. Waterproofing would have nothing to do with it unless Apple and it's manufacturing partners are not as good as Sony and it's partners.

same story as the removal of CD ROM drives.

also: headphones ALREADY have an adaptor for the 3.5 format, can you believe it? Just unscrew the old one, plug in the new one, problem solved.
