I haven't seen anyone point this out: this will force every manufacturer on Earth to provide headphones with lightning connectors on their headphone lines because no one is going to want to use their iPhones with a dongle adapter hanging out, right?

And there are millions iPhones out there so it would be silly for a manufacturer not to cater to such market.

Which means that, while we had a somewhat universal connector for headphones worldwide, now it will get fragmented into proprietary connectors, reducing compatibility, convenience and affordability for everyone, worldwide.

This move makes sense if Apple is releasing wireless earbuds.

Because it allows you to use your wireless earbuds while charging it when they run out of power.

Eventually all the ports will be gone, just like the Apple Watch (ignore the diagnostic port - I don't think Apple has officially acknowledged it at all, so they could at any point remove it without notice.)

As long as they have TWO connectors so we can charge and listen to music at the same time.

Wireless headphones (earbud style) are never as loud or clear as wired.

That's really not true anymore. Newer High-quality BT headphones sound very close to wired. And, believe it or not the Beats Solo 2 Wireless are virtually indistinguishable from the wired versions. (And before folks deride the Solo 2s; you're dead wrong. I own more than six pairs of audiophile 'phones and the Solo 2s are my go-to favorites. They really are that good.)

I'll go against the grain and say this is awesome.
Especially if you are playing in the expensive Apple ecosystem, why are you complaining? They are already saying there will be an adapter (oh the outcry of a $20 adapter for your $800 phone!!) and could you imagine the pissing and moaning if Apple said F you and there wasn't going to be an adapter? People here are never happy with anything

If you'd take the time to listen to yourself speak (or type), you'd understand why people have a problem with it—if you're going to pay $800 for a phone, you shouldn't have to spend an extra $20+ to get something as basic as headphones to work with the phone.

And knowing how Apple has operated in the past, they won't give you the adapter for free. Instead, they'll sell it separately and charge an outrageous amount of money for it, all in the sake of MOAR PROFITZ!!!

And for those who say "Apple knows what people want...", that's a bunch of bull crap. Apple only does what is in their best interests, and spins it to make people think that's what they need. What people want is to listen to music, and not have to pay extra to do it.

Works for me, I use my Jaybird X2 bluetooths anyhow. At least Apple is keeping some kind of wired option, although I can't for the life of me fathom how anyone could wear the stock white earbuds Apple makes. I suppose I'd be pissed if I was an audiophile and couldn't use my favorite headphones, or didn't want a bulky adapter.

I don't mind thinner though. My 6s+ is at 50-60% when I get home at night, and I use the heck out of it including 3+ hours of Waze being open with full brightness and a couple of hours of streaming music. But thinner isn't something I would kill myself for. I think aesthetically it's much more important for the iphones to ditch those horrid 2008 style bezels.

well if a $20 adapter is that big of a deal, vote with your wallet and go buy a different ****in' phone and be done with it.

I'm sure you won't though and you'll buy a 7 like everyone else who is bitching.

you missed my point entirely though. if apple kills the 3.5 mm jack, 3.5 mm headphones will be on the way out altogether. get new headphones and move on with life. dont like it? go elsewhere or keep what you have.

No. Just no. In the words of basics, I literally can't even if this comes to pass.

Oh wow, so we will have to decide either listen to music of charge the phone....knowing Apple. they won't ship it with adapter out of the box....just look at the new Macbook...it doesn't ship with the adapter for full size USB, instead its an ad-on....here we go...more $$ in apple's pocket.

If they really wanted to jump the shark, why not eliminate all jacks and go 100% wireless, even for charging...

I realize that Apple has wagged the industry a few times in the past, and I don't miss floppy disks anymore than anyone else, but this is 'too soon'...

Who knew that they would buy a headphone company, and decimate their business...

But that makes for an interesting question: Does the current Lightning connector support audio? Video?

AND: How long until they dump that like they did the MagSafe power connector. I haven't heard that they have that amazing connector on their newest notebook. I really like that feature. It's saved my cheese a lot. I have dogs...

Look at that, Apple Brand Appliance that only works with Apple Brand Appliances. I look forward to the next best thing in dish and clothes washing from Apple, which will only properly wash Apple Brand Apparel and China.

The future is wireless anyways. Wires are so 2010. If you are plugging in your headphones you are doing it wrong.

Adapter sold separately for just $19.99.
Also, nobody needs to charge an iPhone and possibly use the audio jack as well!
Bluetooth has the same audio quality as 3.5.
/s

Shall I continue?

Well, wireless uses more juice and it's just another device to keep charged. meh...

They make it very hard to feel too excited about their products these days.
I'll sack some hate, but whatever: the magic is gone.
At this point most of the reasons Apple gear still is better than competing products can be boiled down to:
-existing investment into the ecosystem
-possibly a better focus on privacy, which I have to admit I love
-former success and sensible design (software and hardware, mostly hardware these days as they say goodbye to many software feats)

PS: Oh and how convenient to make the iPhone thinner again. That way you might lust for that separate port even more whilst listening to music when you face the obstacle of picking between charging and audio.
Of course there will be Y-splitters, yours for just 29.99!

If you can afford an iPhone you can afford a 29.99 connector, give me a break.

do you wanna charge? or do you wanna listen to Apple Music?

They'll probably introduce inductive charging with an additional $100 charging plate. :(

Like everyone, I think this would be a terrible idea, the 30 pin was an apple standard, the 3.5mm jack is a decades old (perhaps a century) industry standard.

I could somewhat support this if Apple introduced 'air' and 'pro' lines. The 'air' line could be as obsessively thin as they want and the 'pro' line would have a decent battery and headphone jack.

The only good thing about thinner phones is that the batteries can't hold as much, therefore resulting in slightly quicker charging times. Software optimisation helps make up for the smaller battery.

However I would still prefer a thicker body with a bigger battery, Apple!

Isn't it obvious?

We have so many clues that the iPhone 7 will be waterproof and while Apple seems to know how to make the Lightning port waterproof, they want to get rid of as many holes and buttons in the phones as possible.

What makes me think so?

Clue 1: The gasket in the iPhone 6s that makes the phone at bit more waterproof -> Apple is experimenting and checking if such a gasket will work in the iPhone 7.
Clue 2: TouchID integrated into the display -> no more Home button.
Clue 3: Apple wants to get rid of the mute-switch -> One opening less to worry about, especially as the switch would probably be much more difficult to waterproof than the volume- and power-buttons.
Clue 4: No more headphone jack -> Only the Lightning port to worry about left and they designed it themselves, to they will have thought about how to make waterproof Lightning ports when they developed it.

The iPhone 7 will be waterproof and it all makes sense when you combine the rumors.

BETRAYAL! If I don't have my BIG klunky adapter with thick tangly wires attaching to my phone for headphone use I will be IRATE and demand to go to android to have my thick klunky adapter with thick tangly wires attaching to the phone.

Because tangly klunky is cool and funky.

You seriously think Apple will go for all that trouble just to make the iPhone waterproof? Who cares about it being waterproof lol. There're a lot of phones that are waterproof, no one cares though.

I JUST bought a line in cable for the car this week because I'm so damn tired of bluetooth lag in the car. Siri is unusable it takes so long to register a command.

So I charge and listen to music at the same time a lot. They need to preserve charging and audio out simultaneously or this is DOA.
