LIghtning is needed if you play high res Audio, I presume, that's where Apple is heading.
LIghtning allows for higher density signal and probably much higher quality. Even if you use wireless phones, I bet that the sound will be better than current one.

Seriously? Did you just make up that BS now or does it take special effort to come up with something so stupid?

So the magic lightning copper is able to carry a higher density signal than the plain old copper in normal earphones. What the hell does "higher density" even mean when you're talking about a signal over copper? What were you smoking when you came up with that?

It's an analog signal over copper.

Oh go away Apple... What if I want to charge and listen to music?

And what would the advantage be? Thinness? Because the 6S isn't thin enough...

At this point in time, I'd love Apple to split into two different models. The iPhone Classic which would be between the thickness of the 5 and 6, it would have a massive battery and it would NOT sacrifice useful features for thinness, then the iPhone Air could be the model that battery life + usefulness goes out the window for thinness.

Well, I have 5 pairs of wired headphones. Two are B&O's and one is Grado. I won't be abandoning them any time soon.

I guess I'll just *sigh* stick with my iPhone 5 until it dies.

I can't imagine anyone would be stupid enough to buy lightning connector headphones because they then can't even use them on their Mac, let alone the billion other devices in the world that don't have lightning ports. So I was also thinking, does Apple really want you to get home and immediately have to plug in your Phone, your Watch, your (bluetooth) Headphones, your Laptop and whatever else you have in your bag?

It's the charging apocalypse.

Makes no sense unless they are planning on a lightning port on every mac too. Why would I buy a pair of headphones that only worked on one of my devices? If apple wants to ditch the 3.5mm jack, then promote bluetooth headphones instead.

Well, this is asinine. I believe this may be inevitable, with their current priorities:

"I am here to present to you our thinnest phone yet!"
*SNAP*
"Did it just...?"

My initial response is resistance, although I would like to hear potential benefits. I don't consider making the phone thinner a benefit, by the way. I thought the 5 series was plenty, I don't want/need a paper thing device.

I would hope (but doubt) that an adapter would ship with the device. I think headphones are a pretty standard common thing to use with these devices and it would be a shame to have to purchase another produt just to continue using them. That's not even mentioning the fact that Apple's lightning cables have a tendency of wearing down at the lightning connector port; it's a point of contention that this happens when people use the phone a lot while plugged in, but surely we would be using the phone actively with headphones plugged in.

As it stand I usually use headphones for the gym. An adapter would need to not be cumbersome. I suppose I could buy lightning port headphones but that would limit the use of those devices to iOS hardware (unless Apple allows others to use lightning, which I doubt).

So I have come full circle in asking what benefit this can have for consumers. It's possible I am just not thinking of anything right now, but this certainly does seem like more problems than solutions for the end user.

Also I'm holding my iPod touch 6G in my hand (which most people have never probably held since it's a dead product) and while I've never been one to care too much about thinness, I have to admit the iPod touch 6G thickness is absolutely sublime. This is the sweet spot for the thickness of the iPhone of the future. Think how chunky/clunky the 6/6S will look when people get used to a 6mm thick phone. Don't believe me? Pick up a touch 6G and see for yourself.

Great. Apple managed to squeeze in a 3.5 mm Audio connector into your sweet spot design iPod Touch 6, so no need to remove it for thinness then. The other reasons you apologetically mentioned sound to me like solutions to problems which doesn't really exit.

But great for MR to finally find a threat heading towards the weekend which is able to go beyond 70 replies.

Slow news week, huh?

Then we must begin to refer to the iPhone 7 as the BOTCHED iPhone 7. Best to get used to this nomenclature now!

Isn't it obvious?

We have so many clues that the iPhone 7 will be waterproof and while Apple seems to know how to make the Lightning port waterproof, they want to get rid of as many holes and buttons in the phones as possible.

What makes me think so?

Clue 1: The gasket in the iPhone 6s that makes the phone at bit more waterproof -> Apple is experimenting and checking if such a gasket will work in the iPhone 7.
Clue 2: TouchID integrated into the display -> no more Home button.
Clue 3: Apple wants to get rid of the mute-switch -> One opening less to worry about, especially as the switch would probably be much more difficult to waterproof than the volume- and power-buttons.
Clue 4: No more headphone jack -> Only the Lightning port to worry about left and they designed it themselves, to they will have thought about how to make waterproof Lightning ports when they developed it.

The iPhone 7 will be waterproof and it all makes sense when you combine the rumors.
Someone's using their brain…

Well, I have mixed feelings about it. iPhone 6 is already too thin to hold without a case, just too slippery.
Also there is the thing where they will reduce the battery for it to happen, so..
But on bright side, maybe they introduce wireless charging? But along with the port being multifunctional, as it could be charged even without the pad/dock thing when necessary and be used for EarPods. Plus the sweet waterproof err.. water resistance would be absolutely great at least for some.

I'll trust Apple on this one, iPhone 7 is worth looking forward too. :)

That's a great point, for reference:

So iPod touch is already thinner than iPhone 6 and yet Apple was able to squeeze the 3.5mm connector there, so it's technically possible if Apple wanted to keep it but make iPhone 7 thinner.
