Actually Labor day is a bigger vacation day then Memorial day in the US but that isn't really the point here. Apple never has events the Tuesday after a US holiday for three main reasons 1) It would be harder to get people to attend (plane fares, hotels, etc are much more expensive) because the attendees actually have to travel on the holiday where airfares are more expensive. 2) Its much more expensive to set up for the show on a holiday (ever paid the teamsters for a holiday setup? I have, I negotiated it down to 2x regular pay) 3) Steve would have to compensate his employees (at least some of them) to set up the show on a holiday. So no, the media event won't be on the 7th. The 8th however is a real possibility.
Tuesday the 14th is a more likely possibility. The traditional justification for holding press conferences on Tuesdays is for writers of weekly periodicals to make their deadlines. I don't recall the last time Apple held a media event on a Wednesday. In any case, it is a very rare occurrence.

One thing you're right about: event setup over a holiday weekend is very expensive.

Apple is not compelled to release new product on a specific date, so there is very little incentive for them to force the issue. This is part of the reasoning of them abandoning the technology tradeshow scene. They get to call the shots and the media will beat a path to their front door.

I was kinda hyped by FaceTime on the touch, until my friend hit me with this: What will you use it for and how?

Remember you got the touch, so you know it's not a 3g phone so don't expect to make video calls(and go online) on demand like a phone with 3g can.

FaceTime on the touch, I reckon, will mostly be used by people(read: me) in Starbucks who wants to show their buddies how hot the girl at the table across him is.

All in all, FaceTime on the touch is just gravy. Nothing more. The rest of the features, Apps, video and music will still be the true pull factor.

Maybe where you live Labor Day is bigger than Memorial Day. Where I live, not so much. Maybe a quick trip to the lake. And it is the point b/c that was the point I was responding too. Labor day is late this year so recent history is really not the point.

Apple really doesn't need a lot of out of town reporters to attend. There is the Internet and enough tech reporters already based in the SF area to fill up the small auditorium at One Loop or even the the Yerba Buena site.

More expensive to set up on Labor Day, maybe, but I would think, especially after the iPhone 4 event disaster, Apple would set up a few days prior for testing. But even so, it's Apple, not some mom and pop. Any extra labor charges are dust specks to Apple's bottom line.

Apple employees -- I'm sure they are contract not wage employees so holiday pay not applicable. Again, even still, drop in the bucket.

So I guess we'll have to see when the invites go out, but 7th doesn't seem out of the question to me, especially since the news cycle slate will be clean.

Its not gonna happen on the 9th guys, so that means it will happen on another day. The event still hasn't been officially announced.

I know this is a really wacko idea but does anyone else see that little screen going on the back of the iPod touch so that we can use the front camera to take pictures and see what we are taking a picture of using the little screen. Either that or the screen might be used in a new shuffle.

I think Apple wants to get as many FaceTime units in the wild as public so I don't see them releasing a new Touch w/ no FT. The memory costs more than the camera. More likely to see a lower cost 8GB Touch w/ FT.

Except that Apple uses the low end Touch to clear out the previous year production. I still expect to see last years 3rd gen with either 8 or 16 GB for the low end model.

64-bits, besides taking advantage of larger memory addresses, helps when the processor can fetch and executes 64-bits of data than at 32-bits. This is good especially if an app does number crunching like encoding and decoding as it requires less time. Imagine an 8-bit arithmetic function fetching a large data set. 8-bits can only process at 8-bits of data at a time and it would take many cycles to complete let say 256kbits of data. Now there are SSE functions that process 64-bit data chunks. It takes less cpu cycles to process the data set.

IMO, 64-bit is beneficiary on processor intensive applications.

Which iTunes itself is not. The encoder may benefit, but that is only a small part of the application. The rest is not CPU bound by a longshot and wouldn't benefit much from populating registers on 64 bit boundaries in a cycle instead of 32 bits.

That's the point I've been making : All the people screaming for 64 bit are doing it for the wrong reasons. They're buying into some kind of hype.

FaceTime only works over wifi on the iPhone 4.

FaceTime doesn't use 3G, only WiFi.

new ipod touch, finally!

I hope to god they don't pull another 3rd gen iPod touch where only the mid-end and top-end models got upgraded. Hopefully they sell the new touch at the increased 16gb capacity for the price of the current 8gb.

Same with me, just can't wait!

Do you think they'd keep an earlier generation and just sell it cheaper? I don't think Apple has ever done that before.
Apple is doing this right now.

Last summer, they started the practice of keeping the low-capacity previous generation model of the iPhone and iPod model as the entry level device.

I think they will have a stripped down entry level model for sure. These models have historically sold a lot and the $199 price point really is magical and is the impulse consumer spending point. Most casual consumers are also satisfied with what the entry level model offers. It would be stupid for them not to have an entry level one. I can't imagine them selling a whole lot of iPod touch's starting at $299, at that price point it is seen as a premium product not everyone can afford. Its only a $100 difference, which for a lot is a drop in the bucket but I can't argue with the fact that $199 just seems so much less than $299.

I don’t think iChat will BE FaceTime or vice versa, but it would be nice to see iChat updated to support FaceTime along with all the other protocols it supports.

Thanks - I didn't realize that. I'm paying closer attention now that I am considering a new purchase.
