I'm considering getting the new Sony InZone M9 Montior for my 2021 MacBook Pro external display for photo and video editing and I do have a PS5.

Wondering how much better this rumored display would be and at what cost difference as the M9 is around $899

Sony Inzone M9 is also on my short list for Mac / PC / PS5 (currently use a 27" 1440p @165Hz monitor). There are other FALD monitors coming (many with more zones than the M9), so I'm going to wait a bit to see what comes. Alternatively, if Gigabyte M28U goes down in price enough, that might be ok for a few years while I wait to see what comes.

They should lower the price on existing 27” model to $1,200 and introduce the newer, mini LED model at a higher price point. The current pricing for the 27” is too high for a mass market monitor (especially since it doesn’t include mini LED).

There are already FALD 4k high refresh rate monitors coming at lower price points than $1599. A 5k miniLED high refresh rate monitor would be great and I hope Apple does it, but its going to be way out of my price range.
5K and high refresh rate? No, just no. It isn't possible with today's display technology. You can have one or the other, but not both. Too much bandwidth...

I’m not sure why he’s convinced this is for a standalone display. If anything, combining this rumor and time table with what Gurman reported about the larger iMac, I’d say this panel is more likely for that product.

With respect, the Apple Studio Display is not intended to be a mass market monitor.

Display Stream Compression (DSC) appears to allow 120Hz at 5K over TB4.

I think it’s obvious the supply chain is hampering Apple’s launches. The mini led display was almost certainly meant to launch at the same time as the studio display. The studio display with IPS is priced so highly to make the MiniLED upgrade look cheaper than it is. I think it’s also so thick compared to the 24” iMac because the thermals were designed for a large MiniLED display.

I think the max price the market will bear on a display like this is $2499 for the top configuration. But we’ll see what Apple thinks.

Is promotion at 5K possible over current Thunderbolt standards or would it require the purchase of 2023 or later laptops?

A better screen is great, but the killer feature is the market-leading, best-in-class web cam. Build in the virtual desktop feature, and drop the Stage Manager which is really not needed in a desktop display.

Unless I don't understand something, people should be careful using the term FALD in comparison with mini-LED (which is a type of FALD) without talking about the number of zones. The Sony InZone M9 27" has 96 zones. The MacBook Pro 16" has 2,554 zones.

Also, the Sony InZone M9 has peak 600 nit v. the MBP 1600 nit.

If this purported mini-LED desktop monitor has anything like the same mini-LED density and brightness as the MacBook Pro, it will absolutely be a premium monitor.

If I forget the fact that you used to be able to get an iMac for the same price I paid for my ASD I am very happy with it. I haven’t used an external monitor for years and was really impressed at the quality, sound and …. Yes…. Webcam. I’m also please my 2018 15” drives it with no issues or slowdown. Of course there is no real competition for what it offers … so that helps.

why would they have two 27"? At least this way they would have 27, 30 and 32 (low, mid, high)

My guess is they are constrained by TB4 bandwidth with DSC so they have to keep it at 5K for 120Hz and 5K is Retina at a 27" panel size.

Which is why I favor the idea that this will be marketed as a Pro Display XDR model and not an "Apple Studio Display Pro". Folks are already conditioned to pay a mint for the 32" XDR so offering the 27" at $4000 (with stand) will seem like a bit of a bargain compared to the $6000 (with stand) for the 32" model.

I mainly use Apple products but I'll never repurchase their displays again. They change ports way too quickly, making their displays obsolete before they are worth their bloated price. I learned my lesson the hard way with their Thunderbolt Display.

^^^ This right here. Should be added as a sticky to the original post.

Not at 10 or 12bpc which is what macOS uses. You need DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 via USB4, which isn't supported by any M1/M2 hardware. And Apple has never released a new display that isn't supported by at least one existing/current piece of computer hardware.

You should still be able to connect an Apple Thunderbolt Display to any modern Mac via the TB2 to TB3 adapter.

Maybe that functionality will be built into the M2 Pro and M2 Max MacBook Pro 14/16 and Mac Studio refreshes either as part of the Pro/Max SoC or as a separate controller with a dedicated USB4 port (as in this port can be used with said new display if you have one or as a regular USB4 port if you do not).

I mean Ross Young has a pretty solid track record and for much of the past year he has been saying Apple is working on a 5K MiniLED Pro Motion display and we have reports that LG has been testing such in their labs so seems like Apple has a plan to make it happen.

I don't want another 27" display, I've been using 27" displays for a decade. I want a 30/32" 6K display that's cheaper than the Pro Display XDR because, as a developer, I don't need everything it does but do need loads of screen real estate.

Maybe that is why they are waiting and that functionality will be built into the M2 Pro and M2 Max so it will release with the MacBook Pro 14/16 update.

Possibly, but it would still be unlike any other other display (including Pro Display XDR) which worked on existing Macs, literally the day it was released.

All these guys are essentially making educated guesses, unless they show us a render of something that eventually comes out (Luke Miani, Jon Prosser). Why doesn't someone who believes Ross Young just ask him about the tech needed to make 5K120 work, and see what he says?

I really hope thats not the case and we will get this for the bigger iMac. $4k for a 27" screen is just nuts.

The rumored 7K Pro Display XDR 32" should fit the bill (and what a bill it will have). :)
Yep, that thing is going to be pricey.
My hope is that the current XDR will drop in price to $3k while the new version will continue to be $5k. If that happens, I'll snatch the old XDR. Yes, I know, it might be wishful thinking. :(

My LG5K has the pink issue and I can’t get anything to replace it with anytime soon. Not do I want to shell out for basically a six year old screen with very little improvement. (Been using retina too long to consider anything but.) Seriously considering biting the bullet and getting the Pro XDR for the bigger size and you can get one without waiting for months. This rumoured mid-way monitor might have been perfect for me.

You can get HP OMEN 27U instead now. For $700, it checks all boxed InZone M9 has

Displayport 2.0 can do 4k@240Hz or 16k60 but limited color depth. Possible 5k120 is no issue. Not sure if that can be done over TB4 and not sure if current chips can handle. Maybe M2Pro/Max has what it takes to accept it - and maybe this is a reason for some delays also. There will be for sure some compression going on DSC or whatever else.

Again, check out HP OMEN 27u. Surprisingly not many know this new monitor
