Those asking whether it will be with your carrier or not - if you can afford it - buy the phone outright. this will guarantee its not SIM locked ( GSM ) or crippled by the carrier in anyway.

Either way, you end up paying the full price by the time your contract is up, or very close to the full price.

I'm sure Apple just loves playing ball with cell companies and their control over features. You just know how much Apple is willing to give up....

i hope its true... but its gotta be for verizon....

I doubt it...I bet it's with AT&T/Cingular/SBC and whatever other company AT&T recently merged with. I know they just merged with BellSouth and SBC.
They'll probably go after Sprint next.

When the iPod with video came out, I mentioned to my brother-in-law that I bet that Apple will come out with an iPod that has an iPod size, touch control screen - like the rumors floating around now.

I also said "Imagine an iPod that has a full screen, has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and has a cell phone built in. You wear a pair of Bluetooth glasses that have head phones built in, and the lenses double as computer monitors - you can see through the image to see where you are going, and it appears to be a 60 inch screen about 8 feet from you. It has voice recognition so that you don't need a keyboard to type, and it tracks were your eyes are looking so that you don't need a mouse."

My brother-in-law said that it will never happen. I'm betting that he's wrong. Maybe the next iPod will be close to my dream, an iPod with full size screen, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and a cell phone. The glasses may have to wait a few years.

[Edit] This guy seems to have the same idea.

Then in that case, I won't be buying the iPhone, as once my contract is up in December, I'm getting as far away from Suckgular as I can.

An awesome phone is nothing more than a paperweight with horrible service and reception. I shop for carriers first then phones second, not the other way around.

Ive had Cingular ever since it was cellular one and have not had any problems with the service where im from. NJ

this will blow everything out of the water if it happens, i'm pretty sure of it.

but what i'm not sure about, is if it will happen.

my contract just ran out, but im holding out on upgrading or anything in anticipation of the apple phone...

im already with cingular but i dont wanna lock myself into a contract and then have apple debut a phone with some other carrier...

the guy a few posts ago said basically the same thing... just because your contract runs out doesn't mean you have to sign a new one. its just a service commitment they have you sign before they give you the phone at a cheaper price...

Can someone explain to me why this is a good business move for Apple?
By all accounts, the devices thus far out there that behave as mobile phones and mp3 players have been flops. I am a big Apple fan, but there doesn't seem to be a market for multi use devices. People want a solid item that does a solid singular task (like the iPod). They don't want a half assed device that is a jack-of-all-trades, but master of none.

If it happens, then it's 100%. If it doesn't then it's 0%.

What does 75% mean? It has absolutely no context.

Yeah, what's this based on?

Here's what I think:

"75%" = "After obsessively following every thread about this on MacRumors for 10 hours a day, and after fantasizing about the possible price, features and design, we think Apple with probably come out with an Apple cell phone (we hope, hope, hope! :D )"

i'm betting apple will become an mobile virtual network operator (mvno) like virgin, boost, et al. they'll lease network time from of the big companies and be able to control the whole widget again - like they did with the ipod.

i can't see stevie j, allowing a company like cingular or verizon to dictate things like bluetooth transfer, or insisting on their logo appearing somewhere. nope i think it'll be iPhone, works with MobileMe.

Hopefully this happens at WWDC 2007. My mobile phone contract expires in August 2007 and I'd love to get an Apple phone. I've had Motorola SLVR, Nokia N70, SonyEricsson P950, I don't like them! I want an Apple phone :p

to make it SUPER successful

it needs to run on the RIM network of blackberrys. there are a few companies making RIM licensed phones...yes it would suck in a way for apple for having to pay royalties...but the last thing the market needs is another smartphone platform that bites the dust.

-RIM compatible email push style
.....instant email is a definite plus, wouldnt buy a phone with out it

-easy for small developers to make software
.......palm has SO much software on their side, but their phones are unreliable. the treos are buggy and bad reception. i had a 600, and the 650 which was better, but the blackberry has both beat. never had a hiptop, but people i know that do love it. both hiptop and BB have small software catalogue compared to palm

-itunes with major space
....id love a PSP style apple phone. 60GB, widescreen, movies, audio, built in camera. EDGE, i dont care about wifi on it.....EDGE has better reception. wifi is nice, but so is unlimited interent access on my blackberry.

-blackberry plan rates
cap it off at $60 US a month for unlimited interenet and email worldwide.
thats my plan with cingular.

-unlocked version for less than $1000.
......i know its a lot for a phone, but if its ipod and phone and camera and all this other ****....$1000 is the right range for a smartphone. kinda stupid when you can get a laptop for the same but its market acceptance, and miniturization that make these phones so expensive.

-GSM, cdma is for losers. verizon has great plpans, but upgrade your network. international phones are what business travelers want.

Mac Mail and Entourage syncing. i want .Mac syncing email for different computers on non-dotmac email addresses. a 60GB phone is like a laptop....youd never have to delete any emails.

touch screen? indifferent. i liked it on the PALM, but on a BB the one finger access is really quick.

those are my thoughts.

Apple has little game in this market. Everyone thinks Apple has some sort of iPod trump card but they have little presence in the cell phone market. Carriers don't want people to be able to transfer music from their PC's, they want them to pay hefty data access fees and keep the music stuck on the phones.

Getting into the market is the hardest part. Carriers want everything locked down, and Apple doesn't. If Apple doesn't get their phone on a carrier's contract option, hardly anyone will get it. Phones are simply too expensive for most people to get them without a subsidy.

If Apple wants to sell a slew of these phones, they will have to offer them them separate from a carrier, which means low low margins to make it an attractive price.

When the iPod was introduced, MP3 players were not in the modern zeitgeist, and there were only a few competitors.

Cell phone usage is large, but I doubt is accelerating as much as it had been.

Plus, there is nothing really wrong with cell phones as they are.

Now, I have Verizon, and I am not a cell phone conossieur as some of you obviously are, I always get the cheapest phone, and the cheapest plan. I am someone who is not interested in texting, sending video clips or pictures, downloading wallpapers or ring tones.

These are the improvements I would like to see:

Cheaper plans, including plans with unlimited minutes
Agressively blanketing rural areas with cell phone coverage
Increasing battery life of phones
Not charging the person receiving a cell phone call
Making phones work internationally
Making the phones sturdier.

Thank you for your time.
