Besides the little Apple logo, why would this phone be any better then any other phone?

Just curious....

That's the first thing I asked myself. The only thing I can come up with is the same thing that makes any of Apple's products, and that is seamless integration. Give it Bluetooth and a slick interface to manage/update contacts, a few photos, and limited iTMS content and I think it would be a winner. Include a piece de resistance like functionality as a remote for Front Row, and it could be really cool.

Unless this phone will run the OSX or can hold 1000 songs, this is really nothing special.

If you're right, then there will have to be careful consideration about the Nano. Whether it's a lower price or larger capacity, there can be little doubt that Apple would introduce something that would cannibalize the sales of the Nano.

Yawn...

Another iPhone thread? Oh boy, better go to sleep, it's more than 1am here in Switzerland...

Not to mention the fact that, if Apple is becoming a virtual carrier, it's gonna be restricted to "Amerika"; and if it's just a phone, it will probably be sold only to the U.S. again, not in Europe or Brazil...so no, not interesting at all...yawnnnnnnnnn...

Simplicity.

if the iPhone is anything like iWeb, it'll be too simple to be usable!

This is the trouble with a lot of Apple consumer software - although its good ( iWeb is extreme case ).. its OK quality, but its focused to the lowest denominator, in that the software is really basic for the average user. Apple target their software too low for the user ability.

I think an "iphone" would be pretty cool, but like all apple products, they aren't so cheap. I can get a much cheaper phone that uses verizon that'll be pretty good. I just don't see the point of massive integration in a cellphone the way integration is needed in other areas.

I think you're mistaken, read this article:
http://communities-dominate.blogs.com/brands/2006/03/nails_into_the_.html

Apple has to do something soon, or the iPod will become a niche device.
Yes, using statistics, any conclusion can be proven :D

Questions not addressed in that blog entry:
  • How many of those music-capable phones were bought because they payed music, compared with the number that were sold for other features ?
  • Somewhat related to the above, how many people with music-capable phones use those phones to listen to music? (the article touches on that but doesn't really answer.) Of those who do use the function, how many use that as their primary source of portable music?
  • How much of the IFPI mobile music sales figure represents ring tones instead of full tracks?
Music phones arent going to replace the iPod any more than the bottle opener hooks built into most can openers are going to replace separate bottle openers. They are different things that will be of use to different people.

I hope this is true. I think Apple would make a great phone. I certainly find this more exciting than fifty new flavors of iPod or the latest crappy-television show download debut on the iTune's Music Store.

There ain't no way that Apple is releasing a "MacPhone" anytime in the near future. It doesn't make any sense after the ROKR iTunes phone that Apple would release something like this. Why? Sure I'd loooove to see an Apple phone but it ain't happening.

From what I've heard, the ROKR phone sucks. And the other MP3 player phones aren't so hot. If Apple can successfully combine a phone and an iPod, and make it work right (and I have my faith in them) then it makes perfect sense.

Any good competition for the SLVR / ROKR would be great
I wish there was a way to just pick and choose exactly what options I wanted for a phone:
great design
a good camera 2 MP or better
expandable SD card
bluetooth
plays as many mp3s as you can fit.
thats it for around/under $300
plus One that NOT everyone HAS.
Guess ill check back in 6 months

Just my 2ct but i don't think Apple will bring a true full fledged cellphone-iPod on the market, don't forget Apple can't back down afterwards and its a very risky move. I put my money on an (bluetooth?) extension for the current iPod or a wireless bridge between the iPod and current phones.

Or is this technically a problem?

it needs to run on the RIM network of blackberrys. there are a few companies making RIM licensed phones...yes it would suck in a way for apple for having to pay royalties...but the last thing the market needs is another smartphone platform that bites the dust.

-RIM compatible email push style
.....instant email is a definite plus, wouldnt buy a phone with out it

-easy for small developers to make software
.......palm has SO much software on their side, but their phones are unreliable. the treos are buggy and bad reception. i had a 600, and the 650 which was better, but the blackberry has both beat. never had a hiptop, but people i know that do love it. both hiptop and BB have small software catalogue compared to palm

-itunes with major space
....id love a PSP style apple phone. 60GB, widescreen, movies, audio, built in camera. EDGE, i dont care about wifi on it.....EDGE has better reception. wifi is nice, but so is unlimited interent access on my blackberry.

-blackberry plan rates
cap it off at $60 US a month for unlimited interenet and email worldwide.
thats my plan with cingular.

-unlocked version for less than $1000.
......i know its a lot for a phone, but if its ipod and phone and camera and all this other ****....$1000 is the right range for a smartphone. kinda stupid when you can get a laptop for the same but its market acceptance, and miniturization that make these phones so expensive.

-GSM, cdma is for losers. verizon has great plpans, but upgrade your network. international phones are what business travelers want.

Mac Mail and Entourage syncing. i want .Mac syncing email for different computers on non-dotmac email addresses. a 60GB phone is like a laptop....youd never have to delete any emails.

touch screen? indifferent. i liked it on the PALM, but on a BB the one finger access is really quick.

those are my thoughts.

Sorry, but what you are asking for is more like a monstrous computer, not a mobile phone...Apple is about simplicity, not "cram-all-you-can-inside" philosophy...

No joke - geoffrey, my mind was swimming reading that post. You'd have a device bigger than the f*cking Palm 700w! Keep it simple. Your description goes against what I know Apple to be in most every way. *shudder*
Also - CDMA is for losers??? Code Division Multiple Access has *such* a better reputation in reception and usability nationwide...when I was on Cingular I couldn't hold a conversation longer than 20 minutes without having a dropped call, and that's in several different markets (Tucson, LA, Chicago, Indianapolis). GSM has better phone technology (handsets), and yes international capabilities (except for Korea) , but in terms of network reliablilty Verizon pwns Cingular.

I would buy one if it was released for Verizon, but Verizon will not release one, at least not for year after everyone else does. And when they do, they will cripple any cool features that it may have.

I think you made a very good point, and now I am sold to an iPhone.

It seems very unlikely to me that Apple would release a mobile phone without becoming a virtual carrier at the same time. They would surely want the handset to be available worldwide so that would make it a GSM phone and thank heavens for that, US cell phone technology is years behind Europe, and by being a carrier as well they could put an end to the appallingly restrictive practices that US carriers employ to further their greed. I would have thought just offering a competitive service that doesn't charge for incoming calls (I travel extensively and I don't think this happens anywhere else but the US) would be a pretty cool incentive. With the ability to download iTunes directly over the phone at a sensible fee and the same for movies plus full Bluetooth and iSync integration it could make the package very appealing.
Having said all that I have a problem with Apple diving into a market that they have no prior experience of and I think it is, sadly, unlikely that they would risk it. Ergo, don't hold your breath waiting for this one.

So hack it. That's what I did to my E815 - full bluetooth profiles, baby
