I'm all for change but will this be another "USA Only" thing? Leaving the rest of world and Europe out? Whilst this is great I would rather they update things like Siri to cover the UK or update iTunes with 1080 movies (yes I know its the content provider)

this is what I fear, I wouldn't put it past apple to release it with only with full map support in the US and the rest of the world will be stuck with either nother or low quality maps and only have detailed maps in the major cities like London.

There is a Google Earth app. Maybe that could be updated to include more functionality by Google...

Seriously? 3D is useless... Or you use 2D map or Street View, i see no point using 3D lol

And seriously, Apple is the only one of the 3 major brands that doesn't have a Map.

Nokia, Microsoft and Google (Which includes ALL android phones), everybody have it's own map!

Invest that 100 billion in some maps database, and please, pleaaaase, don't say "Only compatible in U.S."...

You know what would be a really cool addition to this? A Temporal option to say, see a movie of the city of New York being built over the course of a couple of decades.

Other applications would be for developers to show a movie of their construction project. Apple could demo it on their own factory, server, and HQ construction projects, and even give the counter example by showing the "progress" on Steve's own home remodel. :D

Rocketman

This is a good thing for everyone, you could either use apple's mapping system or use the google maps app that google is inevitableaby going to make which would get updated more frequently with new features.

I wouldn't count on it getting updated more frequently if Google Voice for iOS is any indication.

The google maps navigation is really the primary reason I haven't switched to an iPhone yet.

but will the map data be as good as google maps?

will I be able to zoom in to a random country outside of the US and have the detail that comes from google maps? considering that even bing maps is pretty poor at the moment I'm not holding out much hope for these maps.

"I'm sorry, but Apple maps can only search for maps inside the United States, and when using US English" ;)

As slow as Apple has been with updates lately, I really hope this isn't the killer new feature in iOS 6!

Wouldn't street view be 3D since you can see all around you in 3 dimensions because they wrapped the images around a sphere??

I think the 3D style they showed in the main post would be way more useful for someone visiting a city like that than a top down flat building view... Especially if you're trying to find your way around. It's oriented how you would see things in real life instead of as a satellite... Of course, I apologize if you are a satellite and that's how you see the world..

d'oh completely forgot about the Google Earth app, in that case Apple can do what they want with their maps app so long as I'll still be able to view and use Google Maps by another means is fine by me.

Though I won't be happy if Apple decided to then exclude Google Maps because it's competing with their app.

I don't care what they do as long as they include turn-by-turn and it works.

Either this or let Siri start turn by turn on 3rd party apps. I'll take either at this point. Asking Siri for directions and getting a static maps view isn't useful while driving.

It's transitional. Apple has to start somewhere, just like Google once did. When Street View was first available how many cities were covered? Not many. If you live in East Bumbleside then you have to expect to not be first on companies update target.

This is a step backwards. Replacing Google Maps with OpenStreet. Ugh.

Read the story again, but maybe more carefully. It's not OSM. Apple now owns its own mapping companies. I agree using OSM would be a disaster. The Apple brain trust is smart enough to know that too, I'm positive.

Sure it has uses - just ilke Google Street view does. It's another tool in the toolbox.

Apple needs to be careful. Innovation is great, so long as the best features are kept when moving forward.

If any of the most used features of Google Maps are lost because of Apples desire to implement their own solution, there's going to be a lot of unhappy iOS users...

Open street map sucks

They used to. But I've been using them a lot when abroad (you can save the maps on your iPhone using 3rd party apps), and found them to be on par with Google in most areas.

Google is cleaner, but Open Street Maps certainly don't suck anymore.

I just want maps built in, so if I run out of signal I don't lose my maps.
E.g. when abroad, use my GPS and pre-installed maps, otherwise it costs a fortune turning on data and using maps...

Depending on the other features of iOS 6, I would probably not upgrade simply to keep Google maps. I love it, am used to it, and use streetview often. They cannot replace streetview, sorry!

Actually it wouldn't be 3D in either cases, since we are viewing it in 2D dimensions.

But what i mean is that there is other things to be improved before this 3D view. I don't like either the 3D building view in google maps, I think it's useless.
And I apologize too if you see the world as a plane as shown in video :p

I use Google maps a lot on my iPad just because it's fun to use. Hopefully Apples maps are just as good if not better! I'd hate to lose them for maps that are still in beta IE: Siri.

This worries me, because - as we've seen with Siri - Apple will forget that there is a world outside the US, and will probably not update it to be a world map until 2046.

I am sure it will be "US Only".

I fully understand that getting map data takes time but Apple have to be careful about removing services that people already have and that fully work.

if they implemented a solution that didn't have the same level of service as Google Maps provides then Apple could be in some pretty hot water, as customers who could easily zoom into their house one day the next (after the update) are left high and dry. (ie one day fully functional the next worthless)

Not to mention that there are laws (at least here in the UK) preventing a company selling you a product then issuing firmware updates that remove working features.
