Requires iPhone 12 or newer :troll:
Not compatible on any MacBooks

Im expecting this in iOS 16.2 Beta 5 tbh, which will come today.

Would be cool if Apple could allow song producers to upload versions of their songs without the vocals in addition to slightly removing the vocals.
Actually requires iPhones 11 and above 😝

Too bad it's only available on the new Apple TV 4k. I can't imagine it's too difficult for the older models to display text.
It will also be removing vocals from the songs (slightly) in real time which requires a lot of processing power. It isn't as simple as displaying text unfortunately.

Kinda sad that this isn't available on the MacBook. Hopefully with macOS 14 they use the iPad music app as the main music app and allow this feature.

I think the reason why it requires newer phones is the fact it won’t be a collection of new songs without the voice. Apple will use on the fly AI processing to reduce voice volume substantially over the existing song collections.
By the way, there is already a lot of apps that offers the same feature.

Will it allow for microphone input though? I think this is a great idea, but in order to have a karaoke night, you need a way for your vocals to come out of the same speakers as the music. I don't see any mention of this in the article.
I think the phone will work as the mic and users can airplay the video/lyrics to nearest TV for all to see.

Apple Music Sing will be available on all compatible iPhone and iPad models as well as the new Apple TV 4K.
It says compatible iPhones and iPads, meaning compatible with this feature. Not iOS 16. Apple hasn't said which iPhones this supports quote yet. I would assume it is iPhone 12 or newer.

Ah, this may explain it.

Apple Music Sing includes:
  • Adjustable vocals: Users now have control over a song’s vocal levels. They can sing with the original artist vocals, take the lead, or mix it up on millions of songs in the Apple Music catalog.
  • Real-time lyrics: Users can sing along to their favorite songs with animated lyrics that dance to the rhythm of the vocals.
  • Background vocals: Vocal lines sung simultaneously can animate independently from the main vocals to make it easier for users to follow.
  • Duet view: Multiple vocalists show on opposite sides of the screen to make duets or multi-singer tracks easy to sing along to.
Apple Music will also be launching a suite of more than 50 dedicated companion playlists featuring all of the epic songs, duets, choruses, and anthems that have been compelling people all around the world to sing — fully optimized for the Apple Music Sing experience.

Fantastic. Now let’s fix the two biggest things that need to be fixed. And they are about audio. I was thrilled when they added lossless. But both on the phone and on the Apple TV, they don’t provide the full lossless experience. There is zero reason why the Apple TV does not have it, even in the 2022 model. That’s just silly. But on the phone we have a different problem. They don’t have it there because they want to sell you only Apple headphones. They don’t support the industry standard that would allow them to get you full lossless audio wirelessly on your headphones. There are plenty of headphones that support it, but apple doesn’t support it on the phone. Most every android phone does. There is no reason why apple can’t except that they want you to buy an Apple headphone where they have their own standard that is not very good.. They want you to buy an Apple headphone and only an Apple headphone. The funny thing is that it doesn’t do them any good. No one who cares about audio fidelity is going to get an Apple headphone. We just buy from someone else and then spend even more money to make it work with our phones. Please apple, fix this.

It will also be removing vocals from the songs (slightly) in real time which requires a lot of processing power. It isn't as simple as displaying text unfortunately.

They could at least support it for a-cappella songs on older hardware. 😄

I caught that too. I wonder why the previous 4K models can't support it?

Something tells me the new Apple TV 4K requirement has to do with the lyrics and voice processing which is probably happening on-device in real-time and is very likely precise due to this.

Rarely, but on some songs, I would occasionally want the option to hear an instrumental version and I have had to try to find them on YouTube to see if anyone has covered it. I wonder if this will in effect give me this option in Apple Music itself and with the original instrumental. That would be great.

Only ten millions of songs will be offering this feature for now. Interesting.

Coupled with an ever-expanding catalog that features tens of millions of the world’s most singable songs, Apple Music Sing makes it fun and easy for anyone to participate, however and wherever they choose.
