Would love it if a new a new iPod touch was released that was a meaningful update.

Before  Music lossless I would have said that product line was dead, but given that Apple is offering a form of losses that none of their devices can natively play, I now thing there is a small chance.

While lossless isn’t really a major factor for me, I love having a dedicated music device.

This offers more proof that people don’t really know what Apple is planning tomorrow. The suggestions that Apple isn’t innovating or isn’t going to get ipados correct is all conjecture. We really have no clue.

So are they actually gonna release the feature tomorrow or will it be an explanatory show?

No need to wonder. Apple stated that Atmos and spatial audio will be avalaible for the entire airpods and beats lineup, including the first generation ones. So, any headphone with the W1 or the H1 chip will do.

Uhhh, not according to Apple. Spatial Audio is only supported by AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. Spatial audio requires more advanced chips. Dolby Atmos, however, is available on any pair of headphones. I think you got it mixed up.

I think the iPod touch is history.

Your link is to the requirements for Spatial Audio in video.

This is about Apple Music.

I think you got it mixed up. Which is fair, because Apple didn't actually include this on the apple music page as Spatial Audio, just 'Dolby Atmos' support. The two terms seemed to be interchangeable in the presser. Are they the same thing or is Apple going to add something impressive to differentiate themselves from the others with Dolby Atmos (whether in Apple Music or their hardware)?

Any reason why this should be limited to Apple headphones? For instance, tidal offers its take, 360 spatial audio, and it works with any headphones no matter which manufacturer. You get the ability to customise the sound if you have Sony headphones because the tech originated with Sony, but it works with any.
Because its not technically available without the H1/W1 chip.

What I find interesting on this is the time of the event. Two hours after the start of wwdc keynote. In years passed, keynote has always been a long event and no real set end time. This year, it means they have everything timed out if another event is scheduled to begin two hours after it’s start. Quite interesting.

I should hope they do have everything time out... It will be a pre-recorded video, just like last year.

Is this weird to anyone else? A special event just about lossless audio playback... that none of their devices support? I have a gut feeling they're going to show an iPod touch, which would be awesome imo. I won't buy one, but it's nostalgic since my first Apple product was a 2nd gen iPod touch.

Probably because of Covid it was pre-recorded days or weeks ago. I highly doubt that it’s real time like in person WWDCs

Don't forget, this year it's another of the pandemic-adjusted events - so all ready to roll, filmed in advance.

So basically any headphones with W1 and H1 chip gets a massive upgrade tomorrow? Dang gotta be hurt for AirPods lineups? I mean Find My and Spatial Audio used to be AirPods exclusives. Now it's opened up to the whole Beats headphones with W1 and H1 chips.

Fancy me for being a fan of Beats (post-Apple era) headphones.

Atmos music requires spatial audio, which means 3D sound trough an stereo output. The head tracking part of the imlpementation is optional.

What do I need to listen to Dolby Atmos in Apple Music?

Anyone listening to the latest version of Apple Music on iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV can listen to Dolby Atmos tracks on any headphones; however, only Apple and Beats headphones have a W1 or H1 chip that will automatically play tracks in Dolby Atmos when available.

That means if you're listening to Apple Music with AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, BeatsX, Beats Solo3 Wireless, Beats Studio3, Powerbeats3 Wireless, Beats Flex, Powerbeats Pro, or Beats Solo Pro, you will automatically hear Dolby Atmos tracks when they are available.

For all other headphones, you'll need to turn on the option to hear Dolby Atmos tracks by going Settings > Music > Audio and set Dolby Atmos to Always On.

Any pair of headphones can listen to Dolby Atmos; however, certain pairs of headphones will handle the Dolby Atmos tracks much better. If you're using a budget pair of headphones, you're likely not going to really getting the Dolby Atmos experience since those headphones aren't designed to take advantage of the Spatial Audio that Dolby Atmos offers.

WWDC 2020, virtual also, ran for 1hr48min. Obviously under the 2 hour timeframe but close enough. Guessing this year’s will be close to that.

I am fine with a pre-recorded event. That way, the needless extraneous tidbits and overt pausing for crowd cheering are not a part of the equation.

Exactly. And it removes the pressure of having a crowd line up for hours to get in — if there are only 45 minutes worth of announcements, no need to pad it out to 2 hours just to make everyone feel like they got their money’s worth.
