Do you have a Tesla? I do - and besides a native Apple Music app, I really don't miss Apple CarPlay at all

I have a Tesla (Model Y). I do miss CarPlay. I agree its not as essential as in pretty much any other car - but I still miss it.

I listen to podcasts on Overcast.
I prefer Apple Maps in many ways (and already have traffic there - an extra subscription in the Tesla).
I use other navigation apps for finding charging stations (the Tesla app can do this - but it's very limited).
I don't actually use Apple Music much while driving, but sometimes do (and the rest of the family do).

I usually have to run all these things on my iPhone, which I can at least keep on the induction charging stand under the dashboard screen - but it's hard to see the top of the screen without bending my head down - and is obviously smaller and more difficult to interact with safely.

I've considered one of the third-party integration hacks, but not taken the plunge yet!

If it was any other car it probably would have been a deal-breaker.

Coming from a car with CarPlay to a Tesla, I initially missed it. But the Tesla software is pretty good to be fair. I always used Spotify so that wasn’t much of an issue, but there are two things I would still like CarPlay for:

1. Tesla charge you £10/month for connectivity, something not required with CarPlay (maybe that’s why they won’t allow it).

2. Waze. I miss the speed camera / police locations.

Other than that, it’s no big issue. Guess it would be worse if your daily music streaming app isn’t supported.

Does it not have CarPlay? I just googled it and it seems like not, but that can't be true? I would not buy a car without it today, and absolutely not a car with a Tesla price tag.
Elon says it's not needed, so those of us owners have been doing without CarPlay and without SiriusXM. I love my Tesla, but not having those two things often makes me think about getting a different car.

If there were a competitive EV with similar features and price point, I'd have already switched. It's getting closer and closer with each new model announcement from companies.

I never really wanted CarPlay in my Tesla, I feel like Tesla’s software is top notch and works perfectly. I am however very excited for Apple Music
Streaming music from your phone is 1000% better with CarPlay than with just plain Bluetooth. I'm way beyond over the native streaming in the Tesla.

And, Tesla's map routing sucks. Nearly any other mapping solution available via CarPlay would be better.

I feel like Tesla need to give Elon the boot as he is becoming a liability. He's been absolutely amazing for them and I have no doubt that he is the reason the company (and electric cars in general) have flourished and Tesla simply would not have been able to scale up without him. However, now they have I think he is holding them back by being stubborn by sticking to try to use cameras for everything and massively over hyping FSD capability. There are his inaccurate tweets about FSD timelines/progress and the belief in cameras causing problematic design choices (no HUD in Model3/Y, move away from steering wheel stalks, moving away from radar and parking sensors, refusal to use a cheap rain sensor, unwilling to admit the reasons for phantom breaking) and refusing to add CarPlay.

I have a refresh Model S and really miss CarPlay. Tesla media UI is really bad. Album art/Media controls do not display on drivers console. Album art in center screen is tiny. There is no way to save fixed and user arranged preset FM/SiriusXM stations and then be able to scroll through them, that every other car has, which makes the user have to look at the screen to do anything, etc, etc. Tesla spends all their time on FSD and if they would only spend a little on making the interface better would make the Tesla experience more enjoyable/safer for media people

CarPlay would make it much better and also let the user download more apps that are not available on Tesla. I still love my Telsa, but just dislike the whole UI for media. I will not buy another car without Carplay.

Sure hope that Apple Music is coming.

Wait... I always thought there was some kind of integration of Apple Music, but not Carplay.

So iPhone and Tesla users are listening to Apple Music through Bluetooth as we speak. And Apple Music integration will enable using the car's free LTE network instead of the phone ? I'm not sure I understand.

I'm interested because I'll buy a used Tesla S, Y or X between summer 2023 and summer 2024 :)

I drove a model 3 when they launched and seriously considered one, but didn’t buy it.
Lack of CarPlay was a factor, but not a big factor.

I‘ve seen a number of posts saying that people don’t miss CarPlay much or that they really only want Apple Music. I don’t understand why it‘s ok for Tesla to ignore CarPlay when we’d expect it in any other new car. Maybe they focused on other priorities for the first couple of years, but they’ve had plenty of time to implement it by now. I’m all for a company being innovative and doing things in a ”better” way, but ultimately it’s up to the buyer to determine what “better” means. If they don’t build what I want I’ll buy something else.

Is it possible to plug an iPhone in through USB to play music (even without CarPlay), or is that not supported either? Just curious because Bluetooth is terrible.

I have a Tesla and I do not miss CarPlay at all. Not even a little bit. The Tesla UI (with subscription) is better. I DO want native Apple Music badly so I really hope this is true.

From my personal experience, I would not buy any car without CarPlay except for a Tesla.
That's because legacy automakers absolutely suck when it comes to Software and user experience. But in my Tesla I have not missed CarPlay (except for Apple Music) one bit.
I still miss CarPlay in my Tesla, but mainly for apps like Waze. With the the Tesla App Store supposedly launching soon, we should see quite a few apps launching that will narrow the gap and I will miss CarPlay less.

Help me understand why CarPlay is so important to have in your car?

Currently you can make calls and hear/reply to text in a Tesla. Music apps are available for a long time, sure not AM but that’s coming as well now most probably. Build in navigation works fine. I haven’t missed CarPlay for a second when driving my car. I was always annoyed with having to plug in my phone first thing when getting into my car (maybe that’s improved with wireless CarPlay but still you’d want your phone to be charging?)
Tesla's in-car computer is better than most car manufacturers for sure. But there are still minor gripes that require some concessions when not able to use CarPlay. For instance, when it comes to group messages, dictating over bluetooth doesn't work I can only reply to the individual who sent a message in the group chat, which defeats the point. Of course it also severely limits the number of apps available for use while driving. While I can deal with it, I'd still prefer Tesla add CarPlay.

Lack of Apple CarPlay is the deciding factor for me in regards to getting a Tesla. I can wait.

I know Elon Musk is a thousand times smarter and a billion times richer than I am but I've really come to loath anything he's involved with. Hope Apple stay far away from everything he controls.
I was planning on a model 3 lr purchase next year, what has gone down with twitter made me rethink that. Won’t buy a Tesla at this point unless the board rescinds his ridiculous compensation package and kicks him out as ceo. That’s unlikely though.

I hear you, but after you use Tesla’s industry-leading infotainment system you won’t miss CarPlay. Apple Music? Definitely wanted/needed. Currently I just play it over BT to the car, but a native app is definitely better.

1. The universe is under no obligation to help you understand it. ;)
2. I wouldn’t use any car that didn’t have that as an option in 2022. I enjoy the integration, the ui, but the most important reason tbh is it’s my money and I will spend it how I like.

Nope. Used it, and missed it immensely. I spend a lot of time in my car and it was dealbreaker. Traded for a Macan and haven’t looked back

I haven't had any issues streaming Apple music via bluetooth.. I even like the fact that I have access to my playlist on screen while connected via bluetooth. It will definitely be a welcome addition to have it built in though... I hope they allow downloading like with tidal, that will make the experience so much better.

Now can we please get the native Apple CarPlay in Tesla's?

There's no reason why would Tesla consider it considering their engineering and how closely is HW and SW tied in. This way, Tesla can easily control the usage of its SW and control the data as well as ads on the platform. Sharing the ecosystem with someone like Apple makes no sense to them.

So no CarPlay, and I have to pay for a subscription for navigation? That’s a ****** deal. Again, offer CarPlay and your proprietary system and let the market decide.

I’ll die alone on that hill if so, but any premium car should include both CarPlay and Android Auto!

No, you don't have to pay for basic navigation for Tesla. The $10/month connectivity does enhance it (satellite view instead of just streets view, live traffic) and also ads the cellular connectivity for the other apps (Spotify, Tidal, Netflix, YouTube, Hulu etc.). I currently do not subscribe to it year round as I found it pretty limited without Apple Music. I do subscribe a couple months out of the year when I take road trips/vacation.

Not necessary for navigation... The subscription service adds cellular data essentially so you can get real time traffic reports, and so you can stream your music services, Netflix, disney, hulu, etc...
