This is too funny. I had a similar conversation with my 16 year old the other day. Apparently, what you and I think of as a remix has been renamed a mashup. What they call a remix can last for hours and blend 10, 20, 30 songs into one long montage. I've seen remixes on youtube that run 2+ hours.

We're getting old.:D

Here's a breakdown of the basic EDM terms.

Remix = An edited version of the original song. Artist has full access to the original version (i.e. basslines, vocals etc)
Bootleg = Same as remix, but artist doesn't have access to the original song components (i.e. makes edits on top of the normal MP3 file)
Mashup = Two or more songs combined together.

Mix = Essentially a mixtape consisting of numerous songs, remixes, mashups etc.

Wow, this sounds great! I'm not versed in this particular scene, but I like plenty of electronic music (I'm probably six-seven years out of date) and I'm sure I'll find something I like in this. Nice to see Apple improving Music in this way.

Much appreciated. My kids have introduced me to what I guess is, and I am seriously guessing here, a sub genre of EDM called Trap. I'll deny it to any adult in a 50 mile radius, but some of it was actually okay. I used to be dismissive of today's music because the music of my generation was the best (said by everyone from every other generation). Amazing what an open mind will let in.

You are probably right. I don't even want to tell you how long ago I was dJ'ing so I am very out of touch with the world. Back in my day, DJs were workers, now they are stars and performers. Anyway, could you elucidate me on the difference? Thanks!

Remix = alteration of a particular song
Mixes = it's their whole song set
Mashup = over laying typically one songs lyrics over another songs instrumentals

This is cool, but how does a remix have 30 songs. When I was a young fool and DJ'ed, I had three turntables and could therefore mix up to three. But usually I had song that I played and then just layered in sound from 1 other. The third was meant for beat mixing in the next song. Unless we are talking about doing a 30 or 60 minute recording, the 30 song remix seems amazing for a 3 to 10 minute song.

Went viral and kickstarted the guy's career.

No way. Too many people love soundcloud; including artists. This feature on AM will just be another avenue for DJ's to reach audiences. Soundcloud is the coolest place to find new, obscure, or experimental music. I have an All Access account and still use Soundcloud.

Artists? I'm an artist and had a Soundcloud Pro account with over 15.000 followers.

By uploading normal mixtapes, the ones Apple Music is going to monetize, my account got TERMINATED for just seconds of Sony Music songs included in those 80 mins + mixtapes.

There is no feedback; emails got unresponded, forum posts are joined in a hidden mega post about copyright and never get answers.

It's a nightmare for artists, DJs, that are flocking en masse to alternative services. Those are the very same people who produce the content people love Soundcloud for: mixtapes, bootlegs, mashups.

Even if you only post unreleased stuff, algos frequently mis-identify those uploads and remove them.

Soundcloud is over.

Love that they finally found a way to pay the original artists even though it will be in microcents lol. As someone that's spent 12+ hours at Club Space and attended Ultra and Life in Color festivals (and after parties) in Miami the scene is incredibly diverse with good vibes everywhere. Oh and I'm 42 and was 40 before my sister and and her younger friends got me going. I usually listen to modern classical, some of which is remixes and mashups (Berio, Schnittke, John Cage) but without a dance beat.

Soundcloud - available to play for anyone with an internet connection.
Apple Music - only available to the current 12 million subscribers.

Sure way to limit your potential audience.

Available to play until someone (VC) pays the huge bills. Months, I'd guess, rather than years.

EDM is all I listen to now for the past year and I love it! Just came back from RARE NorCal concert this past weekend where DJ Carnage killed it HA

Apple should buy SoundCloud and replace Connect with it. Soundcloud is having financing problems and is danger of shutting down.

Not to discount your plight, but anecdotes are typically only good for evaluating an individual experience. Your experience with Soundcloud is not everyone's experience. I'm sure there are artists who have a completely differing experience than you did. Their anecdotes would most likely be varying degrees of opposite from yours.

Is this DJ guy 13 years old or what?
Would it matter if he was? I'm twice that age but kids do some great stuff. Mentioning his age pejoratively just reeks of jealousy to me. Gotta take these successful kids down a peg huh?
